Postoperative changes in cognition and cerebrospinal fluid neurodegenerative disease biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous investigators have theorized that postoperative changes in Alzheimer's disease neuropathology may underlie postoperative neurocognitive disorders. Thus, we determined the relationship between postoperative changes in cognition and cerebrospinal (CSF) tau, p-tau-181p, or Aβ levels after non-cardiac, non-neurologic surgery in older adults. METHODS: Participants underwent cognitive testing before and 6 weeks after surgery, and lumbar punctures before, 24 h after, and 6 weeks after surgery. Cognitive scores were combined via factor analysis into an overall cognitive index. In …

Coping with COVID-19: Insights from cognition and emotion research.

Since March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing efforts to contain its spread have caused major problems with public health, along with social and economic disruptions. This Special Issue addresses how coping with the pandemic has been shaped by the interplay between cognition and emotion. The various contributions to this Special Issue explore the impacts of the pandemic on: (a) How people were confronted with new risks and realities; (b) Active processes of emotional resilience and ruminative coping; and c) Moral decision-making. Taken together, this work shows how research on cognition …

Disturbed Balance of Inhibitory Signaling Links Hearing Loss and Cognition.

Neuronal hyperexcitability in the central auditory pathway linked to reduced inhibitory activity is associated with numerous forms of hearing loss, including noise damage, age-dependent hearing loss, and deafness, as well as tinnitus or auditory processing deficits in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In most cases, the reduced central inhibitory activity and the accompanying hyperexcitability are interpreted as an active compensatory response to the absence of synaptic activity, linked to increased central neural gain control (increased output activity relative to reduced input). We here sugges

Association of cortical thickness and cognition with schizophrenia treatment resistance.

AIM: Approximately a third of patients with schizophrenia fail to adequately respond to antipsychotic medications, a condition known as trea … s were assessed. We performed group comparisons, and explored association of cortical thickness and cognition with TR. RESULTS: The TR patients showed significantly more severe clinical symptoms and cognitive impairment relative to the treatment-responsive group. Compared to healthy controls, 56 of 68 brain regions showed significantly reduced cortical thi …

Exploring the neural correlates of (altered) moral cognition in psychopaths.

Research into the neurofunctional mechanisms of psychopathy has gathered momentum over the last years. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified general changes in brain activity of psychopaths. In an exploratory meta-analysis, we here investigated the neural correlates of impaired moral cognition in psychopaths. Our analyses replicated general effects in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, lateral prefrontal cortex, fronto-insular cortex, and amygdala, which have been reported recently. In addition, we found aberrant brain activity in the midbrain and inferior parietal cortex. Our prelimin…

Ketogenic diet and cognition in neurological diseases: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: In recent years, the ketogenic diet has gained special relevance as a possible therapeutic alternative to some neurological and chronic diseases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to answer the following question: Does a ketogenic diet improve cognitive skills in patients with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, refractory epilepsy, and type 1 glucose deficiency syndrome? To define the research question, the PICOS criteria were used, following the guidelines of the PRISMA method. DATA SOURCES: Medline/PubMed, Elsevier Science Direct, Dialnet, EBSCOhost, Mediagra

Novel Antimuscarinic Antidepressant-like Compounds with Reduced Effects on Cognition.

The cholinergic nervous system has been implicated in mood disorders, evident in the fast-onset antidepressant effects of scopolamine, a potent muscarinic antagonist, in clinical studies. One prominent disadvantage of the use of scopolamine in the treatment of depression is its detrimental effects on cognition, especially as such effects might aggravate cognitive deficits that occur with depression itself. Thus, the identification of antimuscarinic drugs that are free of such detrimental effects may provide an important avenue for the development of novel therapeutics for the management of dep…

Dysfunctional Cognition in Individuals With an Increased Risk for Mania.

BACKGROUND: There is still a lack of knowledge about attitudes and cognitions that are related to bipolar disorder. Theoretically, it was proposed that exaggerated beliefs about the self, relationships, the need for excitement, and goal-related activities might lead to mania in vulnerable individuals, however, the few studies that examined this hypothesis provided mixed results. One of the unresolved issues is if such a cognitive style is associated with current mood symptoms or with different stages of the illness, i.e. at-risk versus diagnosed bipolar disorder. Therefore, the present study a…

Cognition of the mothers of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has been found to be associated with cognitive impairment. However, few studies have addressed cognitive impairment among mothers of children with DMD. In the present study, the neuropsychological profiles of both carrier mothers (C-Ms) and noncarrier mothers (NC-Ms) were examined, and the findings were compared with healthy control mothers (HC-Ms). There were 90 participants, consisting of 31 C-Ms, 24 NC-Ms, and 35 HC-Ms, each of whom completed a neuropsychological test battery. C-Ms had poorer cognition performance in attention, working memory, immediate ver…

Cognition, Frailty, and Functional Outcomes of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and frailty are highly prevalent in older adults undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement. This st … overy after transcatheter aortic valve replacement, regardless of baseline frailty status. Impaired cognition may increase functional decline in the absence of frailty, whereas intact cognition may mitigate the detrimental effects of frailty. Cognitive assessment should be routinely performed prior to transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Developing Cognition Endpoints for the CENTER-TBI Neuropsychological Test Battery.

Background: Measuring cognitive functioning is common in traumatic brain injury (TBI) research, but no universally accepted method for combining several neuropsychological test scores into composite, or summary, scores exists. This study examined several possible composite scores for the test battery used in the large-scale study Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI). Methods: Participants with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI; n = 140), orthopedic trauma (n = 72), and healthy community controls (n = 70) from the Trondheim MTBI follow

Sex chromosome aneuploidy alters the relationship between neuroanatomy and cognition.

Sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA) increases the risk for cognitive deficits, and confers changes in regional cortical thickness (CT) and surface area (SA). Neuroanatomical correlates of inter-individual variation in cognitive ability have been described in health, but are not well-characterized in SCA. Here, we modeled relationships between general cognitive ability (estimated using full-scale IQ [FSIQ] from Wechsler scales) and regional estimates of SA and CT (from structural MRI scans) in both aneuploid (28 XXX, 55 XXY, 22 XYY, 19 XXYY) and typically-developing euploid (79 XX, 85 XY) individua

Cerebellar structural connectivity and contributions to cognition in frontotemporal dementias.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative brain disorders, primarily affecting the frontal and/or temporal … nges in bvFTD than SD and PNFA. Both afferent and efferent cerebellar pathways were associated with cognition. The profiles of the involvement of cerebellar pathways in cognition varied across FTD syndromes. In bvFTD, the output pathway of the cerebellum was only associated with measures of episodic memory. The input pathway was associated with measures of …

Experimental dyspnoea interferes with locomotion and cognition: a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases are associated with cognitive dysfunction, but whether dyspnoea by itself negatively impacts on cognition has not been demonstrated. Cortical networks engaged in subjects experiencing dyspnoea are also activated during other tasks that require cognitive input and this may provoke a negative impact through interference with each other. METHODS: This randomised, crossover trial investigated whether experimentally-induced dyspnoea would negatively impact on locomotion and cognitive function among 40 healthy adults. Crossover conditions were unloaded breat…

Social cognition in an adult epilepsy patient with developmental amnesia.

Reports on social cognition in patients with developmental amnesia resulting from bilateral hippocampal lesions are rare, although the link between social cognition and temporal lobe structures is well established. We present the case of a 23-year-old male epilepsy patient, BM, with developmental amnesia due to perinatal cerebral hypoxia. The patient was examined with neuroimaging and neuropsychological methods and compared to IQ-matched patients with epilepsy to control for effects of epilepsy. In addition, we used a test battery that evaluates emotion recognition and theory of mind to study …

Vitamin A and Retinoic Acid in Cognition and Cognitive Disease.

The history of vitamin A goes back over one hundred years, but our realization of its importance for the brain and cognition is much more recent. The brain is more efficient than other target tissues at converting vitamin A to retinoic acid (RA), which activates retinoic acid receptors (RARs). RARs regulate transcription, but their function in the cytoplasm to control nongenomic actions is also crucial. Controlled synthesis of RA is essential for regulating synaptic plasticity in regions of the brain involved in learning and memory, such as the hippocampus. Vitamin A deficiency results in a de…
