Obesity and its associated metabolic disturbances increase the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and anxiety-related disorders. Chronic caffeine consumption was suggested to prevent synaptic and cognitive deficits, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated whether caffeine protects against cognitive and memory deficits and anxiety induced by a hypercaloric diet, and explored the molecular mechanisms involved. Ten-week-old male Wistar rats were assigned to three groups: normal chow (control), high-fat high-sucrose (HFHSu, 25 weeks), and HFHSu plus caffeine (HFHSuCaf

BACKGROUND: University students experience elevated psychological distress, with limited access to mental health services. While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) demonstrates efficacy for anxiety and depression, treatment gaps persist due to access barriers and insufficient between-session support. Large language model (LLM) chatbots could improve and scale CBT delivery. However, the scientific evaluation of chatbot-enhanced protocols is just emerging.
OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an LLM-based ChatBot as an adjunct t

INTRODUCTION: Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) exposure has been linked to neurotoxicity in various animal models, presenting significant concern to human health due to its potential implications in neurodegenerative diseases. Aluminum chloride is a widely recognized neurotoxin and has been used as an animal model of Alzheimer's disease via mechanisms linked with oxidative stress and inflammation. The study investigated the potential ameliorative effect of apigenin on AlCl3-induced neurotoxicity in rats.
METHODS: Forty adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four different groups - control

Sinapic acid (SAc) is a plant-based antioxidant known for its neuroprotective effects. However, its therapeutic potential for Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains limited because of its low bioavailability in the brain. Therefore, the present study hypothesized safe and effective delivery of SAc using chitosan-coated solid lipid nanoparticles (Cs-SAc-SLNs) via the intranasal route for AD treatment. The characterization of Cs-SAc-SLNs using AFM, SEM, and TEM confirmed their spherical morphology with a particle size of less than 200 nm. Moreover, the Cs-SAc-SLNs demonstrated a sustained drug release

BACKGROUND: Basketball games involve numerous cognitive-motor dual-task (CMDT) situations, where athletes must execute technical skills while processing complex on-court information. However, adolescent athletes often experience performance declines under CMDT conditions due to increased cognitive load. Creatine supplementation has been shown to enhance both physical and cognitive functions, but its acute effects on basketball skill performance under CMDT conditions remain unclear. This study investigates the impact of acute creatine supplementation on the technical performance of adolescent b

INTRODUCTION: Performance-enhancing drug (PED) use-particularly anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS)-has expanded from competitive sport into mainstream fitness settings. Although PED use is associated with emotional, cognitive, and social difficulties, less is known about how duration of use or psychosocial factors shape these outcomes. Understanding these dynamics is essential for identifying individuals at greater risk for psychological impairment.
METHODS: A total of 285 adult gym-goers (87 long-term users, 95 short-term users, 103 non-users) completed validated measures of depression (BDI-

This study investigated the effects of cognitively engaging running on inhibitory control and prefrontal brain activation in children with ADHD, and whether physical self-efficacy moderates these effects. Thirty-six children with ADHD participated in three randomized sessions: cognitively engaging running, traditional running, and sedentary activity. Each exercise lasted 30 min at moderate intensity. Inhibitory control was assessed using the Go/No-Go task, and prefrontal activation was measured via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) before and after each intervention. Results showed

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is a well-known ergogenic aid that can enhance physical and cognitive performance. However, it often induces side effects, such as anxiety and overstimulation, which can be problematic in high-pressure sports like wrestling. L-theanine, a non-stimulant amino acid found in tea, may help mitigate these effects by promoting a calm yet focused mental state. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of caffeine, L-theanine, and their combination on physical performance, cognitive function, and anxiety in elite male wrestlers.
METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-control

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common complication in elderly surgical patients, significantly affecting their quality of life. Dexmedetomidine (Dex), an anesthetic, has shown promise in alleviating POCD, but its underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study aims to explore how Dex improves POCD in aged rats by targeting the PINK1-mediated mitochondrial autophagy pathway, reducing caspase-1/11-GSDMD-induced hippocampal neuronal pyroptosis. Transcriptome sequencing identified 300 differentially expressed genes enriched in the mitochondrial autophagy pathway in Dex-treated PO

Disease-modifying therapies to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD) are of fundamental interest for aging humans, societies, and health care systems. Predictable disease progression in transgenic AD models favors preclinical studies employing a preventive study design with an early pre-symptomatic treatment start, instead of assessing a truly curative approach with treatment starting after diagnosed disease onset. The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetic profile and efficacy of RD2 to enhance short-term memory and cognition in cognitively impaired aged Beagle dogs - a non-transge

Spatial navigation is essential for everyday life and relies on complex network-level interactions. Recent evidence suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can influence the activity of large-scale functional brain networks. We characterized brain-wide changes in functional network segregation (i.e. the balance of within vs. between-network connectivity strength) induced by high-definition (HD) tDCS in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) during virtual spatial navigation. Twenty patients with MCI and 22 cognitively intact older adults (healthy controls-HC) un
