Risk factors for cerebral degenerative changes and dementia.

It is concluded that the most important determinants for cerebral neurodegenerative changes and cognitive decline during aging are neuronal shrinkage and/or loss, which are accelerated by certain risk factors: e.g. TIAs, hypertension, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, male gender, low educational status, family history of cerebrovascular disease and absence of estrogen replacement therapy among women. Some of these risk factors are remediable by therapeutic interventions, including prevention of TIAs and medications that control hypertension, heart disease, hyp

Exercise-Related Changes of Networks in Aging and Mild Cognitive Impairment Brain.

Aging and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are accompanied by decline of cognitive functions. Meanwhile, the most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is characterized by loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious to make difficulties for patients in their daily life. MCI is a transition period between normal aging and dementia, which has been used for early detection of emerging dementia. It converts to dementia with an annual rate of 5-15% as compared to normal aging with 1% rate. Small decreases in the conversion rate of MCI to AD might significantly reduce

General anesthesia with S-ketamine improves the early recovery and cognitive function in patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common postoperative disorder that is frequently observed after general anesthesia, which seriously threatens the quality of patients' life. Existing studies have demonstrated that S-ketamine plays an important role in improving neuroinflammation. This trial aimed to explore the effects of S-ketamine on quality of recovery and cognitive function in patients following modified radical mastectomy (MRM). METHODS: Ninety patients aged 45 to 70 years with ASA grades of I or II, who underwent MRM, were selected. Patients were randomly assi

Closed-loop rehabilitation of age-related cognitive disorders.

Cognitive deficits are common in older adults, as a result of both the natural aging process and neurodegenerative disease. Although medical advancements have successfully prolonged the human lifespan, the challenge of remediating cognitive aging remains. The authors discuss the current state of cognitive therapeutic interventions and then present the need for development and validation of more powerful neurocognitive therapeutics. They propose that the next generation of interventions be implemented as closed-loop systems that target specific neural processing deficits, incorporate quantitati

Evaluation of BR-16 A (Mentat) in cognitive and behavioural dysfunction of mentally retarded children--a placebo-controlled study.

It is important to control abnormal behaviour and hyperactivity, and improve cognition in mentally retarded children (MRC), which would help in their education, training and subsequent rehabilitation. Recently it has become known that amongst other side-effects, protracted use of anti-convulsant medication induces cognitive and behavioural dysfunction, which is a major problem in mentally retarded epileptics. In a placebo-controlled study, we confirmed the efficacy of a herbal preparation, BR-16A (Mentat) in controlling such behavioural and cognitive deficits in 40 mentally retarded children.

Neurocognitive Effects of Neurofeedback: A Systematic Review of the Applicability and Therapeutic Effect in Patients with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Psychosis or Clinical High Risks for Psychosis.

Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders are complex mental health conditions that significantly impact cognitive function and quality of life. While pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions are available, their effectiveness remains limited, particularly for negative symptoms and cognitive impairments. These limitations, alongside drug side effects and adherence difficulties, highlight the need for new treatments. Cognitive remediation strategies like Neurofeedback show promise by harnessing neuroplasticity. This systematic review aims to evaluate the neurocognitive and humoral changes ind…

Uncovering the Modulatory Interactions of Brain Networks in Cognition with Central Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising treatment for neurological and psychiatric disorders. It acts by altering brain networks and facilitating synaptic plasticity. For enhancing cognitive functions, the central thalamus (CT) has been shown to be a potential DBS target. The network-level mechanisms contributing to the effect exerted by DBS on the CT (CT-DBS) remain unknown. Combining CT-DBS with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), this study explored brain areas activated while applying CT-DBS in rats, using a newly developed neural probe that was compatible with MRI and could

Treatment of negative symptoms: Where do we stand, and where do we go?

Negative symptoms, e.g. social withdrawal, reduced initiative, anhedonia and affective flattening, are notoriously difficult to treat. In this review, we take stock of recent research into treatment of negative symptoms by summarizing psychosocial as well as pharmacological and other biological treatment strategies. Major psychosocial approaches concern social skills training, cognitive behavior therapy for psychosis, cognitive remediation and family intervention. Some positive findings have been reported, with the most robust improvements observed for social skills training. Although cognitiv…

An interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of a hyperfunctional voice disorder.

The purpose of this article is to describe the treatment of a 45-year-old male with a hyperfunctional voice disorder by a biofeedback therapist and a speech-language pathologist. The interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of this voice disorder involved the combined use of traditional voice therapy techniques and EMG biofeedback procedures together with cognitive behavioral therapy. Voice therapy was facilitated through the use of a computer-based, speech-monitoring system. The remediation of this voice disorder was attributed to the collaborative efforts of two professionals representing

The pathological left-handedness syndrome.

A clinical syndrome of pathological left-handedness (PLH) is proposed to identify the pattern of correlative changes in lateral development associated with early brain injury in some manifest left-handers. This syndrome is believed to be caused by a hemispheric lesion that is predominantly left-sided (or bilateral asymmetric), which onsets before Age 6, and which encroaches upon the critical speech zones of the frontotemporal/frontoparietal cortex. The pattern of changes may include any or all of the following features: shifts in manual dominance, trophic changes in the extremities, transfer o

Improving reading skills in children with dyslexia: efficacy studies on a newly proposed remedial intervention-repeated reading with vocal music masking (RVM).

In this work, two different studies are examined to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel intervention program for the improvement of reading ability in children with dyslexia, known as repeated reading with vocal music masking (RVM). The proposed remedial approach is inspired by Breznitz's original work. The studies assess a 5-week program of intensive RVM training in a pre-post-test clinical paradigm, as well as a longitudinal paradigm where it is compared to 8 months of the standard remediation program (SRP). The results of both studies support the efficacy of the newly proposed RVM method.
