Depression is linked to dementia in older adults.

Depression and dementia are both common conditions in older people, and they frequently occur together. Late life depression affects about 3.0-4.5% of adults aged 65 and older. Depression occurs in up to 20% of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and up to 45% of patients with vascular dementia. Rather than a risk factor, depression with onset in later life is more likely to be either prodromal to dementia or a condition that unmasks pre-existing cognitive impairment by compromising cognitive reserve. Depression can be a psychological response to receiving a diagnosis of dementia. The distinctio…

Mechanism, contributing factors, and coping strategies of alarm fatigue in intensive care nursing: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism, contributing factors of alarm fatigue among nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), and to develop targe … . RESULTS: The study found that alarm fatigue involves dynamic shifts among three cognitive states-cognitive reserve deficit, cognitive load balance, and cognitive overload-with overload being the immediate trigger. Nurses often enter ICU work with limited cognitive reserves. Whether they maintain balance or enter overload depends on the intensity of alarm-related …

Association between education and rate of cognitive decline among individuals with Alzheimer's disease: A multi-national European observational study.

BackgroundThe cognitive reserve (CR) hypothesis presumes higher tolerance of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related pathology without functional decline for those with high education and more rapid decline after AD onset. Evidence supporting the second part of the hypothesis has been largely confined to U.S.-based studies.ObjectiveTo assess the relationship between education and cognitive decline in a multi-national European cohort of older adults living with AD.MethodsWe analyzed data from participants recruited into the GERAS-EU cohort study from AD clinics in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Fran…

Educational attainment, structural brain reserve and Alzheimer's disease: a Mendelian randomization analysis.

Higher educational attainment is observationally associated with lower risk of Alzheimer's disease. However, the biological mechanisms underpinning this association remain unclear. The protective effect of education on Alzheimer's disease may be mediated via increased brain reserve. We used two-sample Mendelian randomization to explore putative causal relationships between educational attainment, structural brain reserve as proxied by MRI phenotypes and Alzheimer's disease. Summary statistics were obtained from genome-wide association studies of educational attainment (n = 1 131 881), late-ons

Causal effect of mandatory elementary education textbooks on literacy and cognition of low socioeconomic status older adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that early-life education can help build cognitive reserve, providing resilience against late-life cognitive decline. The research on education and late-life cognitive health, however, has focused more on developed nations and higher levels of education. This research examines the effects of an elementary school policy on literacy, education, and late-life cognitive health. METHODS: We analyzed, through a shift-share instrumental variable approach, the causal effect on late-life cognitive health of an exogenous policy change that introduced free and…

Self-distancing is positively related to higher scores during U.S. Army (USA) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) advanced leadership training.

The extent to which self-regulatory tendencies predict military leadership ability is unknown. In the present study, we assessed the relationship between these tendencies and military leadership competency. During a United States Army (USA) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Advanced Camp capstone leader development and assessment course, 234 cadets completed a survey measuring five self-regulatory tendencies: self-control, cognitive reappraisal, emotional suppression, grit, and temporal self-distancing. Overall camp performance scores were used to assess and quantify leadership ability. No

Cognitive Rehabilitation for Patients with Schizophrenia: A Narrative Review of Moderating Factors, Strategies, and Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Antipsychotic drugs constitute the basis of schizophrenia therapy; however, available pharmaceutical agents lack efficacy for treating the cognitive deficits caused by the illness. The aim of the present work is to present current data regarding cognitive rehabilitation of schizophrenia, providing information and guidance to health professionals. METHOD: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed and Google Scholar Databases from inception up to 1/9/2022. Relevant articles were explored for factors affecting cognitive function, including genetics, psychopathology, time in the

The Thalamus in Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders.

Thalamus function and structure are known predictors of individual differences in the risk of age-related neurocognitive disorders (NCD), such as dementia. However, to date, little is known about their role in the perioperative setting. Here, we provide a narrative review of brain-imaging studies of preoperative and postoperative thalamus scanning parameters associated with risks of developing perioperative NCD, such as postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) during the postoperative phase. These findings are discussed in light of the concept of reserve capa

Metabolic correlates of reserve and resilience in MCI due to Alzheimer's Disease (AD).

BACKGROUND: We explored the presence of both reserve and resilience in late-converter mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease ( … y homogeneous AD progression pattern of hypometabolism despite AD heterogeneity and interference of cognitive reserve. In fact, cortical regions whose "metabolic resistance" was associated with slower clinical progression had different localization with respect to the regions affected by education-related reserve.

New developments in imaging in ALS.

Neuroimaging in ALS has contributed considerable academic insights in recent years demonstrating genotype-specific topological changes decades before phenoconversion and characterising longitudinal propagation patterns in specific phenotypes. It has elucidated the radiological underpinnings of specific clinical phenomena such as pseudobulbar affect, apathy, behavioural change, spasticity, and language deficits. Academic concepts such as sexual dimorphism, motor reserve, cognitive reserve, adaptive changes, connectivity-based propagation, pathological stages, and compensatory mechanisms have al…

Prevalence of Comorbidities in Active and Reserve Service Members Pre and Post Traumatic Brain Injury, 2017-2019.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the prevalence of comorbidities associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients among active and reserve service members in the U.S. Military. METHODS: Active and reserve SMs diagnosed with an incident TBI from January 2017 to October 2019 were selected. Nineteen comorbidities associated with TBI as identified in the literature and by clinical subject matter experts were described in this article. Multilingualism (but not always bilingualism) delays the onset of Alzheimer disease: evidence from a bilingual community.

A recent paper by Bialystok et al in Neuropsychologia (vol. 45, pgs. 459 to 464) suggested that early bilingualism produced a statistically significant 4.1-year delay in onset of memory loss symptoms in older individuals with Alzheimer disease, possibly reflecting an increase in the cognitive reserve of these individuals. That study focused on multilingual elderly patients of whom 90% were immigrants. Our memory clinic, in Montreal Canada, has the advantage of having a large set of individuals who are either multilingual immigrants to Canada, or who are nonimmigrants but raised in both officia…
