Lagos bat virus transmission in an Eidolon helvum bat colony, Ghana.

A brain sample of a straw-coloured fruit bat (Eidolon helvum) from Ghana without evident signs of disease tested positive by generic Lyssavirus RT-PCR and direct antigen staining. Sequence analysis confirmed the presence of a Lagos bat virus belonging to phylogenetic lineage A. Virus neutralization tests using the isolate with sera from the same group of bats yielded neutralizing antibodies in 74% of 567 animals. No cross-neutralization was observed against a different Lagos bat virus (lineage B).

Insights from paleomicrobiology into the indigenous peoples of pre-colonial America - a review.

This review investigates ancient infectious diseases in the Americas dated to the pre-colonial period and considers what these findings can tell us about the history of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It gives an overview, but focuses on four microbial pathogens from this period: Helicobacter pylori, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Trypanosoma cruzi and Coccidioides immitis, which cause stomach ulceration and gastric cancer, tuberculosis, Chagas disease and valley fever, respectively. These pathogens were selected as H. pylori can give insight into ancient human migrations into the America

Colony-stimulating factor 1 potentiates lung cancer bone metastasis.

Colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) is essential for osteoclastogenesis that mediates osteolysis in metastatic tumors. Patients with lung cancer have increased CSF1 in serum and high levels are associated with poor survival. Adenocarcinomas metastasize rapidly and many patients suffer from bone metastasis. Lung cancer stem-like cells sustain tumor growth and potentiate metastasis. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of CSF1 in lung cancer bone metastasis and whether inhibition of CSF1 ameliorates the disease. Human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells were examined in vitro for CSF1/C

Artificial bee colony algorithm for solving optimal power flow problem.

This paper proposes an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm for solving optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The objective of the OPF problem is to minimize total cost of thermal units while satisfying the unit and system constraints such as generator capacity limits, power balance, line flow limits, bus voltages limits, and transformer tap settings limits. The ABC algorithm is an optimization method inspired from the foraging behavior of honey bees. The proposed algorithm has been tested on the IEEE 30-bus, 57-bus, and 118-bus systems. The numerical results have indicated that the proposed algo

Prevalence of faecal-borne parasites in colony stray cats in northern Italy.

Endoparasitic infections are common in stray cats. Many of these parasites are responsible for zoonoses, and stray cats can be a source of environmental contamination. The prevalence of parasites in 139 stray colony cats in the city of Milan, northern Italy, was investigated by faecal examination. The overall prevalence of endoparasites was 50.4%, with 11 different parasites found. Parasites with zoonotic potential were detected in 49.6% of cats. Concurrent infections with two or more zoonotic parasites were recorded in 14.3% of cats. Among the parasites found, the most common was Toxocara cat

Small colony variants (SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus--a bacterial survival strategy.

Small colony variants (SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus have been implicated in chronic recurrent infections and have therefore gained renewed interest during the last decade. Moreover, SCVs have been shown to be part of the regular growth cycle, are highly dynamic or stable and can be selected during various harsh conditions. As such, the emergence of SCVs has been described not only in human, but also in veterinary medicine as well as in food microbiology. SCVs are characterized by impaired growth, down-regulation of genes for metabolism and virulence, while sigB and genes important for persis

Clinical safety of biosimilar recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factors.

INTRODUCTION: A 'biosimilar', or 'similar biological medicinal product', is a biologic agent that is similar in terms of quality, safety and efficacy to an authorized reference biological medicine. Since the expiration of the filgrastim patent in Europe, three agents have received marketing authorization from the EMA: Tevagrastim, Zarzio and Nivestim. Tevagrastim has also been approved as a biologic by the FDA as tbo-filgrastim. AREAS COVERED: Using the EMA dossiers (all three agents), the FDA dossier (Tevagrastim), and journal publications, this article reviews clinical safety data for these

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor: a new player for the enteric nervous system.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) controls and modulates gut motility and responds to food intake and to internal and external stimuli such as toxins or inflammation. Its plasticity is maintained throughout life by neural progenitor cells within the enteric stem cell niche. Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is known to act not only on cells of the immune system but also on neurons and neural progenitors in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, that G-CSF receptor is present on enteric neurons and progenitors and that G-CSF plays a role in the ex

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor as treatment option in patients with recurrent miscarriage.

In 1-5% of patients during childbearing years recurrent miscarriages (RM) occur. There are established risk factors like anatomical, endocrine and hemostatic disorders as well as immunological changes in the maternal immune system. Nevertheless, further elucidation of the pathogenesis remains a matter of debate. In addition, there are no standardized immunological treatment strategies. Recent studies indicate possible effects of tumor necrosis factor α blocker and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) concerning live birth rate (LBR) in RM patients. Therefore, we performed a retrospect

Chlorophacinone residues in mammalian prey at a black-tailed prairie dog colony.

Black-tailed prairie dogs (BTPDs), Cynomys ludovicianus, are an important prey for raptors; therefore, the use of the rodenticide Rozol (0.005% chlorophacinone active ingredient) to control BTPDs raises concern for secondary poisonings resulting from the consumption of contaminated prey by raptors. In the present study, the authors observed Rozol exposure and adverse effects to mammalian prey on 11 of 12 search days of the study. Mammalian hepatic chlorophacinone residues ranged from 0.44 to 7.56 µg/g. Poisoned prey availability was greater than previously reported.

'Formidable contagion': epidemics, work and recruitment in Colonial Amazonia (1660-1750).

The text analyzes the extent to which smallpox and measles epidemics provoked transformations in the ways in which workforces were acquired and used in colonial Amazonia from the mid-seventeenth to mid-eighteenth century, with an increase in slave raids on the indigenous population and the attempt to organize a trade route in African slaves to the region. It also explores how indigenous mortality rates at the end of the seventeenth century led to a concern with the region's defence and prompted the recruitment of soldiers from the Madeira islands.

Enhanced ovarian cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis by the macrophage colony-stimulating factor.

Coexpression of the macrophage colony-stimulating factor (CSF-1) and its receptor (CSF-1R) in metastatic ovarian cancer specimens is a predictor of poor outcome in epithelial ovarian cancer. This suggests that an autocrine loop is produced by which ovarian tumors can secrete CSF-1 stimulating the CSF-1R resulting in a more aggressive phenotype. Our current work sought to validate this autocrine stimulation model using stable transfection of a 4-kb CSF-1 construct into otherwise nonvirulent Bix3 ovarian cancer cells. A representative clone, Bix3T8.2, produced a 72-fold increase in CSF-1 gene tr

Protective effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on intracerebral hemorrhage in rat.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a member of the cytokine family of growth factors that can protect the neurons from focal cerebral ischemia-induced injuries. The intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has been widely observed in the clinic; however, the protective effect of G-CSF on ICH is still elusive. We found in the present study that the intraperitoneal injection of G-CSF for 5 days could improve the ICH-induced neuronal behavioral impairment measured by limb placement assay. We also observed that injection of G-CSF could increase the number of stem cells in the specific zone of

Scavenging by mammalian carnivores on prairie dog colonies: implications for the spread of plague.

Plague causes mass mortality of prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in shortgrass steppe. Although the pathogen, the bacterium Yersinia pestis, is spread within colonies by flea bites or contact between infected hosts, it is unclear how Y. pestis is transported over long distances between isolated colonies. One possibility is that wideranging, plague-resistant mammalian carnivores pick up fleas when scavenging prairie dog carcasses. Using guinea pigs as surrogates for prairie dogs, we compared how quickly scavengers discovered carcasses on active prairie dog colonies, on colonies recently exti

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor-producing pancreatic cancer: report of a case.

A 74-year-old man was hospitalized for the investigation of fever and severe general fatigue. Laboratory examinations revealed severe leukocytosis, with a leukocyte count of 29 500/mm(3). Computed tomography, ultrasonography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed a pancreatic tumor with a diameter of 70 mm. We performed distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy and gastrectomy because there was invasion of the posterior wall of the stomach. The leukocyte count decreased to 16 900/mm(3) immediately following the operation, but it began to increase again a week later, ultimately

Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor-mediated innate responses in tuberculosis.

The mechanisms by which GM-CSF mediates bacterial clearance and inflammation during mycobacterial infection are poorly understood. The objective of this work was to determine how GM-CSF alters pulmonary mycobacterial infection in vivo. Differences in GM-CSF levels in the lungs of normal mice (GM(+/+)), transgenic GM-CSF-deficient (GM-CSF(-/-)), and transgenic mice with high GM-CSF expression only in lung epithelial cells (SP-C-GM-CSF(+/+)/GM(-/-)) did not affect pulmonary infection rates caused by either the attenuated Mycobacterium bovis BCG or the virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. Localization of symbiotic cyanobacteria in the colonial ascidian Trididemnum miniatum (Didemnidae, Ascidiacea).

Trididemnum miniatum is a colonial ascidian harboring the photosymbiotic prokaryote Prochloron sp. These bacterial cells are located in the tunic of the host animal. The present study revealed, by ultrastructural analysis, that the Prochloron cells were exclusively distributed and proliferated in the tunic. They were shown to be embedded in the tunic matrix and to have no direct contact with ascidian cells. Some tunic cells of the ascidians, however, did phagocytize and digest the symbiont. Round cell masses were sometimes found in the tunic and appeared to consist of disintegrating cyanobacte

Leishmania donovani amastigote components-induced colony-stimulating factors production.

Increased hematopoiesis, driven by colony-stimulating factors (CSFs), is known to occur in infectious diseases. However, whether Leishmania donovani component(s) can directly induce the synthesis and secretion of CSFs is not known. We report that L. donovani amastigote antigens soluble in culture medium (LDAA; 0.01-10 mg/kg), injected intravenously in BALB/c mice, induced the production of serum CSFs; maximum induction (128>16 colonies) occurred at 1 mg/kg. In vitro also, LDAA (0.01-1 mg/ml) induced mouse peritoneal macrophages (MØs) to elaborate CSFs in the conditioned medium (CM); 0.1 mg/ml
