Clinical features, treatment, and outcome of granulocyte colony stimulating factor-induced sweet syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sweet syndrome (SS) is a rare dermatological adverse reaction caused by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), but the characteristics of G-CSF-induced SS are unclear. This study aims to elucidate the characteristics of G-CSF-induced SS and offer guidance for its prevention and management. METHODS: We collected relevant case reports of G-CSF-induced SS by searching pertinent databases until June 30, 2024, and synthesized the data for retrospective analysis. RESULTS: A total of fifty patients were analyzed, with a median age of 44 years (1.7-77). The onset of SS occurred b

An open-label pilot study of recombinant granulocyte-colony stimulating factor in Friedreich's ataxia.

Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is an inherited progressive neurodegenerative disease for which there is no proven disease-modifying treatment. Here we perform an open-label, pilot study of recombinant human granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration in seven people with FA (EudraCT: 2017-003084-34); each participant receiving a single course of G-CSF (Lenograstim; 1.28 million units per kg per day for 5 days). The primary outcome is peripheral blood mononuclear cell frataxin levels over a 19-day period. The secondary outcomes include safety, haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) mobilisat

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in reproductive-related disease: Function, regulation and therapeutic effect.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is one of the cytokines which plays important roles in embryo implantation and normal pregnancy. At the maternal-fetal interface, G-CSF can be synthesized by multiple cells, and participates in regulation of trophoblast development, endometrial decidualization, placental metabolism and angiogenesis. Moreover, as an important medium of intercellular communication, G-CSF has also been shown to exert key roles in crosstalk between cellular components at the maternal-fetal interface. Recently, our study demonstrated that G-CSF derived from M2 macrophag

Multiple cycles of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in decompensated cirrhosis: a double-blind RCT.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplant, the definitive treatment of decompensated cirrhosis (DC), is constrained by donor shortage and long-term complications. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been explored as an alternative option in open-label studies. This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was designed to elucidate the efficacy of G-CSF in DC. METHODS: Seventy patients were randomized to either G-CSF plus standard medical therapy (group A, n = 35) or placebo plus standard medical therapy (group B, n = 35). Primary outcome was 12-month overall survival in patients wh

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-associated aortitis in a woman with breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is increasingly used to prevent chemotherapy-associated febrile neutropenia. Generally, aortitis is not considered a side effect of G-CSF and is thought to be extremely rare. Aortitis is an inflammation of the aorta and occurs mainly in connective tissue diseases (Takayasu arteritis, giant cell arteritis, etc.) and infectious diseases (bacterial endocarditis, syphilis, etc.). We report herein a rare case of G-CSF associated with aortitis in a woman with breast cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a case involving a 63-year-old w

Can granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) ameliorate acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity?

Acetaminophen (APAP) is often used as an antipyretic and analgesic agent. Overdose hepatotoxicity, which often results in liver cell failure and liver transplantation, is a severe complication of APAP usage. To save the liver and save lives from acute liver damage caused by APAP, the search for new strategies for liver defense is important. Wistar rats have been used for the induction of APAP hepatotoxicity. Elevated levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were evaluated for liver toxicity. In

Disseminated cryptococcosis and anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor autoantibodies: An underappreciated association.

The development of disseminated cryptococcosis has historically occurred in patients living with advanced human immunodeficiency virus or other immunosuppressive conditions affecting T-cell function. Recently, patients with anti-cytokine neutralising autoantibodies have been recognised to be at risk for disseminated infections by opportunistic intracellular pathogens, including Cryptococcus species. Herein, we present a previously healthy 26-year-old man who was evaluated with disseminated cryptococcosis involving the bone, lung, mediastinum and brain. The patient's serum cryptococcal antigen

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor gene therapy as a novel therapeutics for stroke in a mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Global ischemia is the resulting effect of a cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA). Presently there is no effective treatment to address neurological deficits in patients who survived a CPA. Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor is a growth factor (G-CSF) with a plethora of beneficial effects, including neuroprotection. Clinical application of human G-CSF (hG-CSF) is limited due to its plasma half-life of 4 h. Therefore, novel approaches need to be investigated that would (1) enable prolonged manifestation of hG-CSF and (2) demonstrate G-CSF efficacy from studying the underlying protective

Successful resection of a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-producing carcinoma of the pancreas: A case report.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein that stimulates the proliferation of precursor cells in the bone marrow and their maturation into fully differentiated neutrophils. G-CSF-producing cancers rarely occur in the digestive system, particularly the pancreas. Herein we report the rare case of a G-CSF-producing pancreatic carcinoma associated with severe anemia due to bleeding in the duodenum, which was successfully treated with surgery. A 79 year-old man presented with epigastralgia and anemia at our institution. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed

Targeting Granulocyte-Monocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor Signaling in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Future Prospects.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, autoimmune disease that affects joints and extra-articular structures. In the last decade, the management of this chronic disease has dramatically changed with the introduction of several targeted mechanisms of action, such as tumor necrosis factor-α inhibition, T-cell costimulation inhibition, B-cell depletion, interleukin-6 blockade, and Janus kinase inhibition. Beyond its well-known hematopoietic role on the proliferation and differentiation of myeloid cells, granulocyte-monocyte colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a proinflammatory mediator acting

Isolated abdominal aortitis following administration of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF).

G-CSF is a myeloid growth factor produced by monocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells. Clinical uses of G-CSF includes mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells from healthy donors before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, acceleration of neutrophil recovery following chemotherapy, and in the management of neutropenia due to other causes including AIDS and genetic disorders of granulocyte production. G-CSF is well tolerated and reports to be safe in healthy donors, although follow-up studies are limited in duration (D'Souza et al. in Transfus Med Rev 22(4):280-2

Combination of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and erythropoietin improves outcomes of patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with decompensated cirrhosis have significantly reduced survival without liver transplantation. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been shown to increase survival in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure, and erythropoietin promoted hepatic regeneration in animal studies. We performed a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether co-administration of these growth factors improved outcomes for patients with advanced cirrhosis. METHODS: In a prospective study, consecutive patients with decompensated cirrhosis seen at
