Strong Heart, Strong Smile: Tooth Loss and Incidence of CVD in American Indian Populations.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth loss and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share risk factors and complex pathways in disease progression and co-morbidities. To date, little research on the relationship between tooth loss and CVD has been conducted in American Indian populations. This study investigated the prevalence of edentulism among American Indian adults and its association with the incidence of CVD. METHODS: The ongoing longitudinal Strong Heart Study (SHS) is being conducted in rural American Indian communities in North Dakota, South Dakota and Oklahoma since 1989. This cohort study included SHS partici

Early Life Trajectories of Household Poverty and Area-Level Deprivation and Childhood Dental Caries: A Longitudinal Data Linkage Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the longitudinal impact of changes in household income poverty and area-based socioeconomic deprivation on dental caries prevalence in early childhood. METHODS: Data from the Growing Up in Scotland (GUS) longitudinal study (2005/6-2009/10) were linked to dental caries experience data at age 5 from Scotland's National Dental Inspection Programme. Latent Class Analysis identified trajectories of household poverty (income below 60% of the national median) and area-based deprivation across multiple time points between birth and age 5. Cumulative exposure sco

Oral Health and Social Isolation After 6 Years: Mediation of Oral Functions.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth loss was longitudinally associated with social isolation. The absence of dental prosthesis use was an additional risk factor. However, the mediating pathways for this association are unknown. The aim of this cohort study was to estimate the mediating effect of three oral functions: speaking, smiling and chewing observed at baseline on the association between oral health at baseline and social isolation after 6 years of follow-up. METHODS: The 2010-2016 panel data from 6103 functionally independent participants aged ≥ 65 years who were not socially isolated at baseline was us

Fluoride and Neurodevelopmental Hazard Modelling: An Assessment of Concentration-Response Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A National Academies Consensus Study report concluded that the evidence did not support an assessment that fluoride is a neurodevelopmental hazard. However, some researchers have undertaken benchmark dose modelling to determine a safe fluoride concentration level in water. Therefore, the suitability of the data for modelling fluoride concentration in urine and water and cognition response using standard criteria was assessed. METHODS: Data quality was evaluated using a standard tool. A random-effects meta-analysis of standardised mean difference (SMD) and regression coefficients w

Preventing Dental Caries in Indonesia: A Scoping Review of Policies and National Initiatives.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, with high prevalence across age groups and ongoing disparities in access to preventive care. While national initiatives such as the 'Caries-Free Indonesia by 2030' goal signal increasing political attention, the effectiveness and equity of current oral health strategies remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to assess the policy direction and documented effectiveness of Indonesia's national-level caries prevention programmes through a review of government policy documents and relevant literature.

Parental Perceptions of Dental Care Utilisation and Their Association With Treatment Completion, Follow-Up and Children's Quality of Life: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Although previous studies explored parents' perceptions of accessing dental care, few examined their link to treatment completion, follow-up and children's quality of life. This study aimed to (1) examine the association between parents' perceptions and utilisation outcomes (access, treatment completion and follow-up) alongside children's quality of life; and (2) identify barriers reported by parents for failing to complete treatment or adhere to follow-up. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among primary schoolchildren in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, using stratified cluster

Using Propensity Score Subclassification to Estimate the Population-Average Causal Effect of Temporomandibular Dysfunction Experience on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Among Australian Adults.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) experience might impair oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Causal inference using population-based cross-sectional data is challenging given the potential for bias. Propensity Score Subclassification (PS-Subclassification) provides a tool to mitigate confounding bias. The aim of this study was to estimate the Population-Average Treatment Effect (PATE) of having TMD experience among Australian adults on OHRQoL using PS-Subclassification and statistically estimated Minimally Important Differences (MID-S). METHOD: Australia's National Su

Assessing Total Fluoride Intake in Children: Reliability of Commonly Used Methods.

OBJECTIVES: Fluoride exposure in children is commonly estimated using questionnaires or urinary biomarkers. However, no study has yet compared these methods for classifying participants into five intake categories ranging from low to high. This study aimed to estimate the extent of agreement and classification consistency between questionnaire- and urinary-based methods for assessing total daily fluoride intake (TDFI) in children aged 4-7 years. METHODS: A total of 104 healthy children across three countries (UK, Brazil, Chile) receiving one of three fluoridation modalities (non-fluoridated-w

Oral Health-Head and Neck Cancers: Addressing Confounding Through Negative Control and Quantitative Bias Analyses.

OBJECTIVES: While there are plausible biological explanations for the association between oral health and head and neck cancers (HNC), existing studies have yielded conflicting results. A key concern is that these associations are influenced by mediators, unmeasured risk factors, and biases. To address this, a negative control exposure was used to evaluate whether the associations between oral health and HNC risk could be attributed to unmeasured confounding. Additionally, quantitative bias analysis (QBA) was performed to estimate the extent of non-differential misclassification of exposure.

Sleep disruption and premolar absence, NHANES, 2017-2020: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Orthodontic treatment often involves four first premolar extractions. There is concern that the retraction of the anterior teeth due to extraction of first premolars may constrict tongue space and will reduce oral cavity and oropharynx space. Constricted airways are often associated with sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and sleep disruption. The aim of this study was to determine if there is an association of SDB factors with the absence of first premolars. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-March 2020
