Nature and the mind: Towards nature-based mental health care and prevention.

The United Kingdom (UK) Government's recent 10 Year Health Plan for England aims to fix a "broken" and increasingly unaffordable health system through a shift from sickness to prevention, hospital to community, and analogue to digital, with a focus on mental as well as physical health. However, the 171-page strategy for a healthy nation does not contain a single reference to nature or biodiversity. We review the significant benefits of nature and biodiversity to health and outline how these benefits can and should be incorporated into the 10 Year Health Plan. We provide examples of effective a

A process model of engaging dementia care partners in fall risk management for health professionals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Family/friend care partners play an important role in managing fall risk for community-dwelling older people with dementia. Despite a lack of evidence-based strategies, health professionals have experiential knowledge in engaging care partners in fall risk management (FRM). The objective of this study was to develop a process model describing how experienced health professionals engage care partners in FRM for community-dwelling older people with dementia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used a qualitative descriptive approach and obtained semistructured interview d

Stress--nurses dealing with family members.

Family caregivers directly care for the older family member, and network with other family members and health and community agencies. Factors contributing to caregivers' stress include impaired family relationships, depression and chronic health problems, lack of preparation, lack of personal time, and moderate support and respite services. The role of the nurse in health promotion includes values clarification, goal setting, decision making, planning behavior change, and social support building. Support programs may include the conceptualization of support as varying in duration and intensity

Taking the terror out of bioterrorism: planning for a bioterrorist event from a local perspective.

There is a growing concern in the public health community over the potential for domestic biological and chemical acts of terrorism. These types of events do not respect city limits, county lines, or other geopolitical borders and pose a unique challenge for local health departments that have a critical role in detecting, preparing for, and responding to such events. Because direct support for most public health service, including bioterrorism preparedness, occurs primarily at the local level, this is the logical starting point for all planning activities.

Increased Public Accountability for Hospital Nonprofit Status: Potential Impacts on Residency Positions.

BACKGROUND: The Institute of Medicine recently called for greater graduate medical education (GME) accountability for meeting the workforce needs of the nation. The Affordable Care Act expanded community health needs assessment (CHNA) requirements for nonprofit and tax-exempt hospitals to include community assessment, intervention, and evaluation every 3 years but did not specify details about workforce. Texas receives relatively little federal GME funding but has used Medicaid waivers to support GME expansion. The objective of this article was to examine Texas CHNAs and regional health partne

Sexual behavior, fertility desires and unmet need for family planning among home-based care clients and caregivers in Kenya.

As antiretroviral treatment becomes more available, community home-based care (CHBC) clients may begin to resume normal daily activities including the resumption of sexual relationships. This study examines sexual behavior, contraceptive use, unmet need for family planning and attitudes toward pregnancy in the context of HIV among CHBC participants (clients and caregivers), many of whom are HIV-positive or at risk for HIV, of the COPHIA project in Kenya. The COPHIA project was implemented by Pathfinder International with support from USAID/Kenya. We interviewed 171 CHBC clients and 183 CHBC ca

Changing behavior to maintain a healthy home.

Multidimensional strategies involving interpersonal interaction, strategic alliances and targeted use of the media have been shown experimentally to be the most effective behavioral change programs. Health providers need to communicate with schools and community groups, as well as work with product manufacturers and consumer and health organizations. Together these groups can collaborate with the media to communicate accurate information and guidance to the public. Planning effective public health and behavioral change campaigns involves diagnosis and identification of the target behavior. The

Clinic provision of contraceptive services to managed care enrollees.

CONTEXT: Since the initiation of managed health care, little information has been available on whether family planning agencies are seeking ways to serve (and obtain reimbursement for serving) the growing number of clients who are managed care enrollees. METHODS: A 1995 mail survey sought information from a nationally representative sample of publicly funded family planning agencies about the agencies' involvement with managed health care plans and related clinic services, policies and practices. Completed surveys were received from 603 agencies, for an overall response rate of 68%. RESULTS:

Implementing a Fee-for-Service Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Program in Cameroon: Challenges and Opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening is one of the most effective cancer prevention strategies, but most women in Africa have never been screened. In 2007, the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services, a large faith-based health care system in Cameroon, initiated the Women's Health Program (WHP) to address this disparity. The WHP provides fee-for-service cervical cancer screening using visual inspection with acetic acid enhanced by digital cervicography (VIA-DC), prioritizing care for women living with HIV/AIDS. They also provide clinical breast examination, family planning (FP) services,

Handling the emotional response to disaster: the case for American Red Cross/community mental health collaboration.

This paper presents the theory, rationale, and a working model for integrating professional resources at the time of a disaster. Red Cross and community mental health agencies have worked for too long in parallel. A collaborative approach to meeting the emotional needs of disaster victims makes optimal use of indigenous resources; provides skill and knowledge normally lacking in each agency alone; and helps provide, through early intervention, a preventive factor to thwart long term community distress. Options for maintenance of readiness, local or regional adaptation and piloting are also dis

The measurement and utility of the opinion leadership concept for family planning programs.

The objectives of family planning educational programs often include information diffusion as well as attitude and behavior change within a target population. This paper suggests that working with opinion leaders might be one possible means of fulfilling these objectives. But in order to work with opinion leaders, it is necessary first to identify them. For family planning studies, the operational indicators used in past studies do not appear to be adequate. These indicators do not accurately identify persons who will take an opinion leadership behavior in the future, do not measure knowledge
