Communicative impairment and its neural correlates in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Communication skills can deteriorate in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD); however, their clinical assessment and treatment in patient care can be challenging. In the present study, we aimed to quantify the distinctive communication resources and barriers reported by patients and their relatives in AD and FTD and associated these communicative characteristics with clinical parameters, such as the degree of cognitive impairment and atrophy in language-associated brain areas. METHODS: We assessed self-reported communication

Connecting Primary Care and Community Services: A New Framework for Comprehensive Osteoarthritis Care.

Osteoarthritis affects 33.2 million US adults and drives substantial primary care utilization. Despite evidence supporting nonpharmacologic interventions, implementation remains challenging due to limited clinical-community coordination. We conducted a project in which we used existing evidence and developed an integrated primary care and community implementation framework for comprehensive osteoarthritis management through (1) landscape assessment; (2) expert panel input; (3) design sessions; and (4) iterative consultation. The resulting "Public Health Framework for Collaborative Osteoarthrit

Examining Environmental Predictors of Community Participation for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

A geographic information system (GIS) approach systematically assessed whether population density and distribution of community resources contributed to caregiver reported community participation outcomes for 124 adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Regression analyses examined whether GIS measures predicted community participation in areas of social activities and use of services, while also accounting for adult age, conversation ability, and daily living skills (DLS). Results indicated that in addition to person factors of greater DLS and better conversation ability, access to specifi

Strengthening community services to keep individuals with mental illness out of jail: a qualitative analysis of implementation mechanisms in 52 U.S. Counties.

BACKGROUND: Identifying mechanisms of implementation approaches helps improve them. This qualitative analysis examined how hypothesized mechanisms (performance monitoring, interagency teams, common goals/mission across agencies, and system integration) influenced implementation outcomes (number of evidence-based services [adoption], people served [reach], and resources to support evidence-based services [component of sustainment]) in county-level efforts to improve community services to keep people with mental illness out of jails. METHODS: Our study statistician chose a representative sample

[Fishery resource biodiversity and sustainable utilization in mangrove wetlands.].

Mangrove wetlands are important ecotone linking terrestrial and marine ecosystems and provide essential habitats that maintain coastal fishery resource diversity and ecosystem functioning. With increasing global concerns on mangrove conservation and restoration, the protection and sustainable utilization of mangrove fishery resources have become important research topics. We summarized the composition and community structures of fishery biological resources in mangrove wetlands, elucidated the ecological roles of mangrove habitats in sustaining fishery resources, reviewed methodological advanc

Content analysis of qualitative interviews for user-centered design of a prototype mobile health app for direct support professionals' resilience.

BACKGROUND: Direct support professionals support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with essential health and community living needs. Despite an unrelenting workforce shortage crisis, limited evidence-based resources exist for their support. Resilience, or the ability to thrive in the face of challenges, is a target for health care professional wellbeing initiatives. As an "invisible" workforce interspersed throughout various community-based settings, direct support professionals may benefit from resources provided via mobile health apps. OBJECTIVES: To assess direct supp

Mapping and conceptualizing recovery capital of recovered gamblers.

Recovery capital (RC) is an emerging conceptual framework in the addiction field that pinpoints the internal and external (i.e., human, community, cultural, social, financial) resources individuals can draw on throughout the recovery process. The concept of RC was developed and applied primarily to individuals who have recovered from substance addiction. The aim of this study was to extend the RC conceptual framework to gambling disorder (GD)-which is classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) as a behavioral

Designing a Healthy Lifestyle Assessment and Resource Referral System Within Pediatric Primary Care Settings.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 US children have obesity. Primary care-based screening for healthy lifestyle behaviors is one way to identify children at risk of having obesity and related consequences; however, providers often lack tools to connect patients and families to obesity prevention. Our study sought to identify essential elements of an electronic health record-based screening and community referral system to help pediatric patients meet physical activity and nutrition guidelines. METHODS: Our mixed-methods study was conducted at a large, academic pediatric medical center in a Midw

Early Childhood Special Education Teachers' Job Burnout and Psychological Stress.

RESEARCH FINDINGS: All teachers have demanding jobs and work with limited resources. However, working with young children with disabilities may place additional demands on early childhood special education (ECSE) teachers which may impact their well-being. Using the Job Demands and Resources model, the present study aimed to predict ECSE teachers' job burnout and psychological stress by using their job demands, job resources, and professional internal resources. An online survey was collected from 121 ECSE teachers from a large urban school district in a Western state of the United States. The

Family Stressors and Resources as Social Determinants of Health among Caregivers and Young Children.

Life course-informed theories of development suggest it is important to integrate information about positive and negative aspects of the social environment into studies of child and parental wellbeing, including both stressors that compromise health and resources that promote well-being. We recruited a sample of 169 pairs of caregivers and young children (birth to 5 years) from a community health clinic and administered survey questions to assess stressors and resources. We constructed inventories of stressors and resources and examined the relationships between these inventories and caregiver

Guiding Principles: Reporting Elements for Gastrointestinal Organoid Research.

Gastrointestinal (GI) organoids are now widely used for disease modeling, drug discovery, regenerative-, and precision medicine. As publications using GI organoids have increased exponentially, methodological reporting across GI organoid studies remains inconsistent, making results difficult to interpret, compare, and reproduce. To address this, we present community-informed guidance for reporting key experimental details in GI organoid research. Our recommendations were developed by integrating established biomedical reporting frameworks, organoid-focused resources from international organiza

Access to Recovery and Recidivism Among Former Prison Inmates.

Access to Recovery (ATR) is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)-funded initiative that offers a mix of clinical and supportive services for substance abuse. ATR clients choose which services will help to overcome barriers in their road to recovery, and a recovery consultant provides vouchers and helps link the client to these community resources. One of ATR's goals was to provide services to those involved in the criminal justice system in the hopes that addressing substance abuse issues could reduce subsequent criminal behaviors. This study examines this goal

Understanding the costs and the cost structure of a community-based HIV and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention program: the Woza Asibonisane Community Responses Program in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The Woza Asibonisane Community Responses (CR) Programme was developed to prevent HIV infections and gender-based violence (GBV) within four provinces in South Africa. The Centre for Communication Impact (CCI) in collaboration with six partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implemented the programme, which was comprised of multiple types of group discussion and education activities organized and facilitated by each NGO. To date, little information exists on the cost of implementing such multi-objective, multi-activity, community-based programmes. To address this information g

The turmoil of aboriginal enumeration: mobility and service population analysis in a central Australian community.

This paper documents Aboriginal population change and mobility over time in a remote community in central Australia. The movement of population has implications for service delivery and resource allocation. Aboriginal population in the region is characterised by high mobility. We conducted four population surveys in a selected remote community over a 12 month period and categorised individuals into four mutually exclusive groups: residents, dual residents, visitors and absent residents. Based on these categories we developed two population classifications: actual and potential service populati

Evaluation of opportunities to implement community-wide mass drug administration for interrupting transmission of soil-transmitted helminths infections in India.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) guidelines recommend control of soil transmitted helminth (STH)-associated morbidity with targeted deworming of preschool and school-aged children who are disproportionately affected by STH-associated morbidity. However, this strategy leaves many adults untreated and reinfection within communities perpetuates transmission even when mass drug administration (MDA) coverage of children is high. Evidence suggests that it may be possible to interrupt STH transmission by expanding MDA to a community-wide MDA (cMDA). METHODS:

Food insecurity and food pantry use among transgender and gender non-conforming people in the Southeast United States.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people face high rates of poverty, joblessness, and homelessness, rendering this population vulnerable to experiencing food insecurity. Yet, there is almost no empirical evidence concerning food insecurity and the use of local and federal food assistance resources in the TGNC community. Food insecurity, the use of local and Federal food assistance resources, and associations with gender-related minority stressors and resilience using the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience (GMSR) scale among TGNC individuals living in the Southeast Uni
