What does self-identified drug of choice tell us about individuals under community corrections supervision?

OBJECTIVES: The term "drug of choice" (DOC) refers to substance abusers' preferred drug and this information often adds to the clinical picture of the patient because substance users often meet diagnostic criteria for dependence on multiple drugs. Characteristics such as age, race, marital status, and psychiatric illnesses have been shown to differentiate among individuals with different DOC preferences. However, no studies have examined DOC in the context of criminal behavior and other drug dependencies. METHODS: The participants (N = 15,475) of a community corrections program, Treatment Alt

Health-related social needs and referrals for genetic evaluation among young children.

Health-related social needs (HRSNs) may impact the receipt of genetic services, but the mechanisms are not well established. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between pediatric patients' HRSNs and referrals for genetic evaluation. We analyzed HRSN survey data collected during clinic visits across 47 primary care offices for children <3 years of age. Using hazard ratios adjusted (aHRs) for child characteristics, we evaluated the relative likelihood of referral for genetic evaluation based on categories of HRSN. The sample included 42,390 children, 470 of whom received a referral for genetic

Periodontal Treatment Protocol (PTP) for the general dental practice.

A sequence of interrelated steps is inherent to effective periodontal treatment: early and accurate diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and continued periodontal maintenance and monitoring. A primary goal of periodontal therapy is to reduce the burden of pathogenic bacteria and thereby reduce the potential for progressive inflammation and recurrence of disease. Emerging evidence of possible perio-systemic links further reinforces the need for good periodontal health. In the private practice setting, the treatment of patients with periodontal disease is best accomplished within the structure of

Profile for Brain Disease Research Infrastructure for Data Gathering and Exploration (BRIDGE) Platform.

Brain diseases complexity have necessitated advanced research platforms for better understanding, treatment, and prevention strategies. However, existing brain disease registries face limitations such as incomplete variable sets, lack of standardization, insufficient linkage to external databases, absence of integrated platforms for comprehensive data collection, and lack of continuity. To address these challenges, the Korea National Institute of Health initiated the Brain disease Research Infrastructure for Data Gathering and Exploration (BRIDGE), a national prospective platform designed to o

Association of oral health factors related to oral function with mortality in older Japanese.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of oral health factors related to oral function and their combination on mortality in older people. BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported that oral factors, including oral function, are associated with mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were 4765 community-dwelling individuals aged 75 and 80 years. The follow-up period for survival or death was 3.5 years, and the date of death was defined based on data managed by the insurer. A Cox proportional hazard model was applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for

Glucosuria and all-cause mortality among general screening participants.

BACKGROUND: Dipstick urine tests are used for general health screening in Japan, but how the test results (e.g., glucosuria) relate to mortality is unknown. METHODS: Subjects participated in a nationwide screening in 2008 in six districts in Japan. We identified those who might have died using the national database of death certificates from 2008 to 2012 (total registered ~ 6 million) and verified candidates with the regional National Health Insurance Agency and public health nurses. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was defined as HbA1c ≥ 6.5%, fasting blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dl, or medicated for DM. Ha

Predicting Care Needs in Community-Dwelling Older Adults Using Explainable Machine Learning and a Multidimensional Approach Integrating Health, Social, and Environmental Factors: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid population aging and a worsening shortage of care workers necessitate the identification of older adults who require proactive interventions. Although machine learning (ML) has been increasingly applied in gerontology, existing studies have predominantly focused on social isolation, loneliness, depression, falls, and frailty in isolation rather than on the integrated construct of care needs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and interpret an explainable ML model that identifies care needs in community-dwelling Korean older adults. Beyond physical health indicators such

Incomplete immunization uptake and associated factors among children aged 12-23 months in sub-Saharan African countries; multilevel analysis evidenced from latest demography and health survey data, 2023.

BACKGROUND: In 1974, the World Health Organization (WHO) established the Expanded Program on Immunization to control vaccine-preventable diseases, saving millions of lives annually. However, the coverage of basic vaccines recommended by the WHO in Africa was only 75%, which fell short of the goal of 90% by 2015. To formulate effective policies and implementation programs to reduce incomplete vaccination rates, it is important to conduct a study to determine the factors contributing to incomplete immunization among children aged 12-23 months. METHODS: The study was conducted in 16 sub-Saharan

Using mobile sensing and wearable technologies to assess the impact of ambient temperature on mental health among low-income black women in Chicago: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence suggests that higher ambient temperatures may increase the risk of mental health disorders and exacerbate existing conditions. Despite this, most studies evaluating the association between temperature and mental health rely on hospitalisation records or insurance claims data, which only capture the most severe outcomes. To effectively intervene to prevent mental health crises associated with ambient temperature, it is necessary to identify and develop novel ways to reach patients before they require care. Digital health tools offer a promising way to address thes

Scaling-up Child and Youth Mental Health Services: Assessing Coverage of a County-Wide Prevention and Early Intervention Initiative During One Fiscal Year.

PURPOSE: In the U.S., the percentage of youth in need of evidence-based mental health practices (EBPs) who receive them (i.e., coverage rate) is low. We know little about what influences coverage rates. In 2010, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) launched a reimbursement-driven implementation of multiple EBPs in youth mental health care. This study examines two questions: (1) What was the coverage rate of EBPs delivered three years following initial implementation? (2) What factors are associated with the coverage rates? METHODS: To assess coverage rates of publicly i

Prompt access to outpatient care post-incarceration among adults with a history of substance use: Predisposing, enabling, and need-based factors.

INTRODUCTION: As expanded Medicaid coverage reduces financial barriers to receiving health care among formerly incarcerated adults, more information is needed to understand the factors that predict prompt use of health care after release among insured adults with a history of substance use. This study's aim was to estimate the associations between characteristics suggested by the Andersen behavioral model of health service use and measures of health care use during the immediate reentry period and in the presence of Medicaid coverage. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we linked ind

Exploring patient and provider perspectives on outpatient care and the family practice model at a university hospital in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Fragmented outpatient care, and disrupted patient-provider continuity hinder progress towards the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in many low- and middle-income countries including Ghana. Despite efforts such as the National Health Insurance Scheme and Community-based Health Planning and Services, continuity of care remains a challenge. This study explored stakeholders' perspectives on implementing a Family Practice Model to strengthen primary care and advance UHC at a University Hospital in Ghana. METHODS: A descriptive-analytical qualitative study was conducted fr

Characteristics of a transgender and gender-diverse patient population in Utah: Use of electronic health records to advance clinical and health equity research.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people, individuals whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth, face unique challenges in accessing gender-affirming care and often experience disparities in a variety of health outcomes. Clinical research on TGD health is limited by a lack of standardization on how to best identify these individuals. The objective of this retrospective cohort analysis was to accurately identify and describe TGD adults and their use of gender-affirming care from 2003-2023 in a healthcare system in Utah, United States. Collaborative Referral Model for Hepatitis C Screening and Treatment in a Remote Mountainous Region of Taiwan during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Community-based screening for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. We developed a collaborative referral model between a primary clinic (Liouguei District Public Health Center, LDPHC) and a tertiary referral center to increase HCV screening and treatment uptake in a mountainous region of Taiwan. Once-in-a-lifetime hepatitis B and C screening services established by the Taiwan National Health Insurance were performed at LDPHC. Antibody-to-HCV (anti-HCV)-seropositive patients received scheduled referrals and took a shuttle bus to E-Da hospital for HCV RNA testing o
