Hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies (Mab) to tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus are obtained. Immunodiffusion showed that 3 Mabs to TBE protein NS3 belong to class IgM and the rest to IgG1. Mabs to TBE protein NS1 were tested in hemagglutination inhibition, complement fixation, neutralization, and protection tests. Only 1 hybridoma produced Mab specific for protein NS1 of TBE strain Sofyin, the rest reacted with the common antigenic determinants of nonstructural TBE complex.

Serological examination by the microagglutination (MA) and complement-fixation (CF) tests of human sera collected before and after vaccination with Q fever chemovaccine revealed a higher sensitivity of the MA test for detecting both pre-vaccination antibodies reflecting a previous exposure to Q fever and post-vaccination antibodies reflecting vaccine immunogenicity. In persons serologically positive before vaccination the level of post-vaccination MA antibody response was indirectly proportional to the titres of prevaccination MA antibodies.

Forty-four cases of liver fluke infestation (fascioliasis hepatica) were diagnosed near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, in 1968. Intramuscular emetine hydrochloride and oral chloroquine given to the adults and children, respectively, were well tolerated. Assessment by repeated stool examination, complement fixation and liver function tests, and full blood counts indicated that treatment had been effective in most cases. It is recommended that both the growth and the sale of watercress should be strictly controlled.

Using the Widal reaction, significant titres against Yersinia enterocolitica, O-group I and V, were found in 300 of 2843 patients (10.5%) with reactive arthritis or arthralgia, and in 38 (1.3%) against Y. pseudotuberculosis type I to V. Of 510 patients with erythema nodosum 86 (16.9%) and 30 (5.9%), respectively, had significant agglutinin titres against one or the other. A first survey concerning camel trypanosomiasis due to Trypanosoma evansi was carried out in the Trarza region (south-western Mauritania). Blood smears were made from 218 animals and 160 were submitted to an indirect immunofluorescence test.
