INTRODUCTION: Personality disorders, characterised by pervasive emotional and interpersonal dysfunction, are integral to psychiatric practice. This service review estimated the prevalence of personality disorders in a psychiatric inpatient setting and looked at various clinical and demographic factors of interest.
METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from 526 patients discharged from St Patrick's University Hospital in 2019-2020 under the care of two consultant-led teams. Demographic and clinical data such as age of first mental health contact, number of previous admissions, and risk

The symptomatic overlap between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder (BD) is a topic of scientific and academic debates. Emotional dysregulation and impulsivity are common features of both disorders. Several studies have shown that both BPD and BD lie on a spectrum; others have suggested that they are separate entities that coexist. BPD is characterized by impulsive and dangerous behaviors such as driving recklessly, inappropriate sexual behavior, eating disorders, and substance abuse. BD, during a manic episode, is known for their impulsive and risk-taking behavior like

Twenty women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 20 women with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were compared on responses to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Multivariate analyses showed no significant differences between bulimic and OCD women on the MMPI, although a greater number of bulimic women showed significant elevations on several of the clinical scales. Analyses of SCL-90-R profiles indicated higher scores on somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, and psychoticism in the BN sample.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908), a coccidian protist (Apicomplexa). It has a strong predilection for infecting the central nervous system. Researchers have therefore investigated its association with several neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, bipolar disorder, cerebral palsy, depression, Guillain-Barre syndrome, multiple sclerosis, obsessive compulsive disorder, Parkinson's disease, personality disorders, and schizophrenia. Among these disorders the strongest evidence

Huntington's disease-like 2 (HDL2) is a rare neuropsychiatric disorder that resembles HD but results from a distinct mutation. The authors present a patient with HDL2, hospitalized for psychiatric management, and they review the neuropsychiatric manifestations of this disorder. Depression, irritability/aggression, and frontal lobe personality changes are common presentations of HDL2 and are comparable to classic HD. Patients with HDL2 may differ from those with HD in having a lower incidence of obsessive-compulsive acts, known suicides, antisocial acts, and changes in sexuality. Clinicians sho

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Personality disorders are significant entities in the field of psychiatry and serve as predisposing factors for A … to predict 16 pathogenic beliefs out of the 27 outcomes examined. Notably, histrionic and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders showed no association with specific pathogenic beliefs. Furthermore, certain pathogenic beliefs were predicted by multiple personality disorders, while conversely, some personality disorders were associated with multiple pathogenic beliefs as well. …

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, progressive, and fatal prion disease. Often the first sign of CJD is rapidly progressive dementia, leading to memory loss, personality changes, and hallucinations. Myoclonus typically occurs in 90% of cases, but often may not be an initial symptom. Other frequently occurring psychiatric symptoms include depression, anxiety, paranoia, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychosis. Speech disorder, loss of balance and coordination may also accompany. We present a case of CJD with sudden onset of right hemiparesis.

We present the case of a 24-year-old man diagnosed with a neuroacanthocytosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, mild-moderate severity depressive disorder, and obsessive personality disorder. He received multiple psychotropic drugs, including neuroleptics, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines with small therapeutic response.Severe and progressive clinical impairment appeared including cognitive deterioration, chorea, tics, lingual dystonic protrusion, Parkinsonism, automutilations, and other behavioral disorders consistent with neuroacanthosytosis. Pharmacological trials were not efficacious, an

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to assess personality disorder (PD) comorbidity in somatization disorder (SD) patients compared with psychiatric controls in a Spanish sample.
METHODS: This is a case-control study. Selection of 70 consecutive SD patients was made, and an age-, sex-, and ethnic-group-matched control group of 70 mood and/or anxiety disorder patients recruited in psychiatric outpatient clinics was selected. PDs were measured using the International Personality Disorder Examination, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Axis I morbidity was

Available MAOIs seem to be mainly indicated for the heterogeneous group of patients with depressive syndromes. Although groups of patients with all the recognized major subtypes of depression (including "endogenous depression") probably respond in varying degrees, MAOIs appear to be particularly indicated for out-patients with "neurotic depression" complicated by panic disorder or hysteroid dysphoria, which involves repeated episodes of depressed mood in response to feeling rejected. MAOIs can also be effective in several anxiety syndromes, in particular panic disorder. Other reports have clai

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) holds a unique status as quintessentially neuropsychiatric condition at the interface between neurology (movement disorder) and psychiatry (behavioural condition). This is a reflection of the common observation that the vast majority of patients present with behavioural problems in association with the motor and vocal tics which define GTS. The present article focuses on the relationship between GTS and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), affective disorders (both major depression and bipolar affective d

Substance-related and behavioral addictions are extremely prevalent and represent a major public health concern. In the ongoing attempt to understand the addictive personality, contradictory results have arisen from studies that have explored personality traits in different addiction populations. The diversity across addiction types suggests that some of these inconsistencies stem from distinct personalities underlying each addiction. The present study compares the personality profiles of several addictions, representing both substance (drugs and alcohol) and behavioral (gambling and sex) subt

There is no adequate classification of obsessive/compulsive phenomena and they frequently co-exist with other psychiatric symptoms, notably depression. Seven years experience in the use of intravenous clomipramine in these conditions is reviewed. Good results have been obtained in the treatment of depression, and obsessive/compulsive/phobic states, and mixed patients. The results in neuroses and personality disorders are poor. It is concluded that clomipramine is the treatment of choice for obsessive/compulsive disorders, with or without accompanying depression.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder, is increasingly being linked to various comorbid conditions, including mental health disorders. This study aims to evaluate the potential causal associations between genetically predicted mental health disorders and the likelihood of developing PD.
METHODS: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach was applied using genetic variants identified from large-scale genome-wide association study as instrumental variables. Multiple MR methodologies, including inverse variance weighted, MR-Egger, and weighted median analy

There is strong evidence about the co-existence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and eating disorders (ED), particularly with anorexia nervosa (AN). An exhaustive review of the specialised literature regarding these disorders was carried out. The results show that their co-occurrence implies a more complex diagnosis and treatment, a more severe clinical symptomatology and a worse prognosis and outcome. Both disorders display common similarities, differences and comorbidities, which allow authors to classify them in different nosological spectra (somatomorphic, anxious, obsessive-compulsive, a

The relationship between obsessional personality traits and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has long been the subject of debate. Although clinicians have asserted for nearly a hundred years that such a relationship exists, empirical investigations have failed to provide consistent support; however, none of these empirical investigations have undertaken analyses that control for the effect of mood variables. Employing a non-clinical sample, Rosen and Tallis (1995) [Behaviour, Research and Therapy, 4, 445-450] found that when mood variables are taken into account, a unique relationship betwe

Sixty-seven subjects, including normal volunteers and patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, and borderline personality disorder, received ratings of depersonalization after double-blind, placebo-controlled challenges with the partial serotonin agonist meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP). Challenge with m-CPP induced depersonalization significantly more than did placebo. Subjects who became depersonalized did not differ in age, sex, or diagnosis from those who did not experience depersonalization. There was a significant correlation between the induction of depersonalizati
