Computer-aided diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis based on ultrasound image statistics, laws' texture and neural networks.

Quantitative characterisation of carotid atherosclerosis and classification into symptomatic or asymptomatic is crucial in planning optimal treatment of atheromatous plaque. The computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system described in this paper can analyse ultrasound (US) images of carotid artery and classify them into symptomatic or asymptomatic based on their echogenicity characteristics. The CAD system consists of three modules: a) the feature extraction module, where first-order statistical (FOS) features and Laws' texture energy can be estimated, b) the dimensionality reduction module, where t

A hybrid AI framework for identification of power quality disturbances in electrical network.

Sustaining power quality is an utmost priority for energy distributors in a modern power system integrated with distributed generation and nonlinear loads. The power quality disturbances (PQDs) comprising of multiple PQD events creates complexities in accurate detection and classification. Therefore, this study presents an effective, resilient and automated hybrid classifier for detection and classification of complex power quality disturbances for single occurrence as well as combinations of double, triple, and quadruple occurrences. To develop an effective and cohesive classifier, it is vita

A lightweight hybrid CNN-transformer model for smoke removal in laparoscopic surgery images.

INTRODUCTION: In laparoscopic surgery, which is a minimally invasive procedure, endoscopic cameras are very common in visual guidance. Nevertheless, surgical smoke produced during electrocautery and laser ablation greatly impairs the quality of images produced by decreasing contrast, blurring edges, and distorting color data. This deterioration is experienced with both the visibility of the surgeon and computer vision-based surgical assistance system performance. Physics-based and image enhancement models are ineffective due to unrealistic assumptions of the smoke distribution, whereas deep le

HA-DETR: accelerating real-time object detection by replacing decoder self-attention.

Mainstream real-time object detectors, like the YOLO series, balance speed and accuracy but are bottlenecked by Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) for post-processing. While end-to-end Transformer-based detectors show potential by eliminating NMS, their high computational cost impedes real-time application. Concurrently, alternatives like DECO, using a pure convolutional framework, are hampered by local receptive fields, limiting global context modeling and limiting the accuracy on lightweight models. To address this, we introduce HA-DETR, a Hybrid Architecture DETR fusing the local feature extract

Sensitivity-enhanced detection of ethanol gas using MoO3 nanoflake-functionalized laser-induced graphene in a planar microwave resonator.

Recent advancements in sensor technology have heightened the demand for more sensitive gas detection methods, crucial for improving environmental monitoring and industrial safety applications. This study investigates the potential of a hybrid of laser-induced graphene (LIG) and MoO3 nanoflakes via a planar microwave resonator for detecting ethanol gas with high sensitivity. To implement the proposed sensor, a rectangular-shaped graphene layer was patterned on a polyimide substrate using a computer-controlled CO2 laser and functionalized with MoO3 nanoflakes. The LIG/MoO3 hybrid was attached to

Antagonistic Activity of Naphthoquinone-Based Hybrids toward Amyloids Associated with Alzheimer's Disease and Type-2 Diabetes.

Protein misfolding and amyloid formation are associated with various human diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Type-2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM). No disease-modifying therapeutics are available for them. Despite the lack of sequence homology between the corresponding proteins, aromatic residues are recognized as common key motifs in the formation and stabilization of amyloid structures via π-π stacking. Thus, targeting aromatic recognition interfaces could be a useful approach for inhibiting amyloid formation as well as disrupting the preformed amyloid fibr

ECG-based Emotion Prediction in Real Life: Tackling Heterogeneity Through a Hybrid Personalization Method.

Predicting people's momentary emotions in real life remains an underexplored challenge in affective computing. Wearable electrocardiography (ECG) offers a promising tool for this purpose, given its psychological relevance to emotion and increasing affordability in recent years. However, a major obstacle lies in the substantial individual differences in the associations between emotional experiences and physiological responses, which is further amplified in real-world settings. Emerging personalization methods offer a potential solution, but their utility for real-life ECG-based emotion predict

Evaluation and volumetric analysis of various grafting materials for alveolar cleft repair.

This study compared autologous mandibular symphyseal bone grafts and biphasic calcium phosphate bone substitutes for unilateral alveolar cleft repair. A retrospective cohort of 112 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate was analysed. Four groups were studied: autologous mandibular symphyseal bone graft (n = 37), pure phase β-tricalcium phosphate (n = 33), biphasic calcium phosphate (n = 18) and a hybrid construct of both calcium phosphate scaffolds (n = 24). Cone-beam computed tomography, preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively, was assessed using a segmentation protocol. Primary obje

Synthesis, in-silico and in-vitro evaluation of quinoline-chromene hybrids as dual topoisomerase inhibitors.

Quinoline and chromene scaffold are recognized to possess anticancer activities but their synergistic potential has never been studied extensively. Our present work investigated a selectively designed series of quinoline-chromene hybrids using an integrative approach combining computational and experimental evaluations. Molecular docking experiments performed on topoisomerase I (3QX3) and II (4FM9) showed high binding affinities with lead molecules 6c, 6l, and 6j having greater efficacy in comparison to standard agents camptothecin and amsacrine. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations confir

Integrating Machine Learning with Hybrid and Surrogate Models to Accelerate Multiscale Modeling of Acute Respiratory Infections.

Accurate, efficient, and explainable modeling of the dynamics of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) remains, in many aspects, a significant challenge. While compartmental models such as SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) remain widely used for that purpose due to their simplicity, they cannot capture the complicated multiscale nature of disease progression which unites individual-level interactions affecting the initial phase of an outbreak and mass action laws governing the disease transmission in its general phase. Individual-based models (IBMs) offer a detailed representation capable of

Novel pyrimidine-artesunate hybrids overcome multidrug-resistance in non-small cell lung carcinoma through collateral sensitivity.

A series of hybrid compounds based on artesunic acid and pyrimidine were synthesized and tested for their anticancer activity against non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), specifically targeting multidrug resistance mediated by P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Preliminary screening showed that artesunate and the hybrid compounds exhibited enhanced cytotoxicity towards resistant NCI-H460/R cells at 5 μM, indicating collateral sensitivity. Dose-response analysis identified compounds 15h and 17a with the most substantial effect, displaying collateral sensitivity indexes (CSI) 4 and 5, respectively, while

A novel extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation strategy using a hybrid emergency room for patients with pulseless electrical activity.

BACKGROUND: Whether extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is indicated for patients with pulseless electrical activity (PEA) remains unclear. Pulmonary embolism with PEA is a good candidate for ECPR; however, PEA can sometimes include an aortic disease and intracranial haemorrhage, with extremely poor neurological outcomes, and can thus not be used as a suitable candidate. We began employing an ECPR strategy that utilised a hybrid emergency room (ER) to perform computed tomography (CT) before extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) induction from January 2020. Therefore, the p

Biomechanical Analysis of Tibiofibular Syndesmosis Injury Fixation Methods: A Finite Element Analysis.

The optimal treatment strategy after syndesmotic injuries is still controversial. In our study, we aimed to evaluate ideal fixation method in syndesmotic injury by using finite element analysis method. A 3D SolidWorks model file was created by taking computed tomography (CT) images of the area from the right foot base to the knee joint level of a healthy adult male. The intact model, injury model, and 8 different fixation models were created that 3.5 mm screw and suture-button were used in. The models were compared in terms of lateral fibular translation, posterior fibular translation and exte

Midfoot arthrodesis following multi-joint stabilization with a novel hybrid plating system.

BACKGROUND: Several methods for fixation have been described for midfoot arthrodesis. Multi-joint arthrodesis at this level can be challenging because of bone loss and deformity, making it difficult to obtain a stable construct. We present the results of a novel hybrid plating system that incorporates locked and non-locked compression screws for multi-joint arthrodesis of the midfoot. METHOD: A retrospective multicenter review of patients undergoing multi-joint arthrodesis with hybrid plating of the midfoot was performed to evaluate the time to radiographic arthrodesis. Hybrid plating was def

Class II treatment of transverse maxillary deficiency with a single bone-borne appliance and hybrid clear aligner approach in an adult patient: A case report.

This case report describes the successful orthodontic treatment of a 22-year-old female patient affected by Class II malocclusion, maxillary skeletal transverse deficiency, ectopic maxillary left lateral incisor, and mild mandibular crowding. Due to her adult skeletal age, a bone-borne appliance was applied in order to obtain both purely skeletal rapid maxillary expansion and bilateral molar distalization. After accurate matching between the pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography scan and digital models, 4 self-drilling miniscrews were inserted palatally using a computer-aided design and c

Pediatric bone scintigraphy update.

Bone scintigraphy is a sensitive tool to evaluate the musculoskeletal system in children. Hybrid imaging using computed tomography (CT) in combination with conventional bone scan and single photon emission computed tomography improves specificity and diagnostic accuracy. It also improves laboratory efficiency and may save the patient an additional visit to the hospital for a separate cross-sectional imaging study. We have found this technique to be particularly helpful in localizing a cause for pain in children who are nonverbal and to better delineate small bone and soft-tissue lesions that c

Experimental and computational methods for allelic imbalance analysis from single-nucleus RNA-seq data.

Combining allele-specific expression (ASE) analysis with single-cell RNA-seq can elucidate how genomic variation affects RNA expression at the single-cell level. We explore how experimental and computational choices impact the power of ASE-based methods and develop a suite of single-cell ASE computational tools. With single-nucleus RNA-Seq, we extract more ASE information from reads in intronic than exonic regions. We show how read length can increase power and that hybrid selection improves power to detect ASE in targeted genes. We apply our methods to a Parkinson's disease cohort and show th

Hybrid SPECT-CT with 99mTc-labeled red blood cell in a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: added value over planar scintigraphy.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare clinical entity characterized by multiple venous malformations (hemangiomas) of the skin and gastrointestinal tract. These hemangiomas usually cause episodes of occult gastrointestinal bleeding leading to iron deficiency anemia, and also carry a significant potential for serious hemorrhage. The 99mechnetium (99mTc)-labeled red blood cell scintigraphy has traditionally been utilized in the localization of occult bleeding sites in patients with suspected vascular malformations, angiodysplasia, and Meckel’s diverticulum. We report the incremental
