Allergic conjunctivitis: Prevalence, clinical patterns, and awareness in adults: A population-based cross-sectional study in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is a prevalent ocular condition caused by allergic reactions to environmental allergens, impacting eye health and quality of life. Public awareness and knowledge of AC, including its symptoms, triggers, and management options, are vital for early intervention. Moreover, understanding the role of allergens like pollen and dust mites in exacerbating AC is essential, yet public awareness remains limited. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey from May 25 to June 27, 2025. The questionnaire covered demographi

Prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis among basic school children in the Kumasi Metropolis (Ghana): a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There seems a preponderance of hospital-based studies on the prevalence of Allergic Conjunctivitis (AC) compared to community-based ones, particularly among children in Ghana and Africa as a whole. Meanwhile, literature supports the possibility of underdiagnosing AC in the hospital setting; exponentially so when males generally have poor hospital-attending behavior. This may lead to underestimation of the true burden of AC. Consequently, the purpose of the current community-based study was to determine the prevalence of AC among basic school children in the Kumasi Metropolis, while

Dendritiform immune cells with reduced antigen-capture capacity persist in the cornea during the asymptomatic phase of allergic conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Increased density and altered morphology of dendritic cells (DC) in the cornea and conjunctiva occur during active allergic conjunctivitis. This study investigated whether inflammation (characterised by altered DC density and morphology) persists during the symptom-free phase of allergic conjunctivitis. METHODS: Twenty participants (age 43.3 ± 14.3 years, 55% female) assessed during their active (symptomatic) phase of allergic conjunctivitis were re-examined during the asymptomatic phase. Ocular allergy symptoms and signs were evaluated during both phases, and five ocular surface

Dietary ω-3 fatty acids alter the lipid mediator profile and alleviate allergic conjunctivitis without modulating Th2 immune responses.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is one of the most common ocular surface diseases in the world. In AC, T helper type 2 (Th2) immune responses play central roles in orchestrating inflammatory responses. However, the roles of lipid mediators in the onset and progression of AC remain to be fully explored. Although previous reports have shown the beneficial effects of supplementation of ω-3 fatty acids in asthma or atopic dermatitis, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, a diet rich in ω-3 fatty acids alleviated AC symptoms in both early and late phases without aff

[A study in immunofluorescence of the plasma cells in allergic conjunctivitis, in particular of the cells forming immunoglobulin E (IgE) (author's transl)].

The relatively simple and precise technique of direct immunofluorescence on a tissue section enables the study and enumeration of all types of plasma cells including mastocytes (stained with acridine orange) in normal conjunctiva (5 cases), chronic non-allergic conjunctivitis (5 cases), allergic conjunctivitis of the educt (11 cases) and vernal conjunctivitis (11 cases). There is evidence of elevation of IgE plasma cells in type I allergic conjunctivitis where they are twice as raised as in non-allergic cases in adult forms, and three times more elevated in vernal conjunctivitis. There was no

Ophthalmic Formulations for the Treatment of Allergic Conjunctivitis and Their Effect on the Ocular Surface: A Review of Safety and Tolerability Assessments in Clinical Trials.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is the most common allergic eye disorder. Antiallergic eyedrops are the first line of pharmacological treatment. However, the application of antiallergic eyedrops can potentially alter tear homeostasis and affect the ocular surface, which may result in iatrogenic diseases such as dye eye disease (DED). Long-term treatment of AC with eyedrops containing preservatives and other components may increase the risk of DED and ocular surface damage. Here, we examined 20 clinical trials published during the past ten years with antihistamine ophthalmic formulations in the tr
