The infection frequency associated to bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers (CU), and endophthalmitis was studied along a five years period. The isolation and identification of microorganisms were performed by culture-based methods and biochemical test respectively. Also, a nested PCR to detect gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria in the clinical samples was assayed. Nested PCR was a more efficient method than culture to detect bacteria in the samples. The most frequently isolated species was Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium commonly considered as a human saprophyte. The S. epide

Periodontal disease is a multifactorial disease having various risk factors, but a dynamic interaction between bacterial products and host response in association with genetic and environmental factors is considered as the primary cause for periodontal tissue destruction in periodontitis. This bacterial-host interaction which is ever-so-present in periodontitis directs us toward utilizing antimicrobial agents along with the routine mechanical debridement. This case report present a case of a female patient with recurrent periodontal infections with gingival enlargement treated with systemic Mi

The novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. We discuss a less common presentation of COVID-19 in a patient where the use of telemedicine technology prevented the exposure of the healthcare team in an academic general pediatrics clinic. A medically complex 20-year-old male presented via virtual visit for unilateral eye redness and discharge. He received topical ophthalmic antibiotics for presumed acute bacterial conjunctivitis and was counseled on return precautions. Three days later, the patient developed shortness o

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva and has 4 main causes-viruses, bacteria, allergens, and irritants. Among these, bacterial conjunctivitis is most common and is contagious, especially when the dentist is working with the infected person, and that person spreads the same to the other patient.
METHODS: A pretested questionnaire survey was conducted among 152 subjects (those who were present at the time of survey) aged 18 to 60 years of Udaipur city, Rajasthan in March 2012. Ethical clearance was obtained from relevant authority. Written informed consent was obtai

Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius is a human-adapted pathogen and the causative agent of Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF), an invasive disease with high mortality, that sporadically manifests in children previously suffering conjunctivitis. Phase variation is a rapid and reversible switching of gene expression found in many bacterial species, and typically associated with outer-membrane proteins. Phase variation of cytoplasmic DNA methyltransferases has been shown to play important roles in bacterial gene regulation and can act as epigenetic switches, regulating the expression of multipl

We report the isolation of Ewingella americana from the conjunctivae of a 38 year old female physician with keratoconjunctivitis associated with the use of soft contact lens. The patient was treated successfully with topical ciprofloxacin. The source of the infection remains unknown. All contact lens cleaning materials used by the patient were sterile. Since the patient was a physician, and this organism has been recorded as a cause of nosocomial infections, we checked whether cases of Ewingella americana had been reported, but none were identified. We have identified 39 bacterial species, 27

We report the results of conjunctival scrapings done in 234 eyes of 127 patients presenting with acute, chronic, or recurrent conjunctivitis. Although some patients had the classic features of superior pannus, Herbert's pits, conjunctival follicles, and tarsal distortions, others presented in a more subtle fashion mimicking allergic, viral, and bacterial diseases of the eyes. These scrapings were subjected to rapid diagnostic techniques and culture studies for the identification of chlamydial infections. The correlation between the clinical and laboratory diagnosis was studied. Of the 127 pati

OBJECTIVE: Features of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) overlap with other febrile illnesses, hindering prompt and accurate diagnosis. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical and laboratory findings that distinguished MIS-C from febrile illnesses in which MIS-C was considered but ultimately excluded, and to examine the diseases that most often mimicked MIS-C in a tertiary medical centre.
STUDY DESIGN: We identified all children hospitalised with fever who were evaluated for MIS-C at our centre and compared clinical signs and symptoms, SARS-CoV-2 status and

Twenty-four of 66 (363.6 +/- 116/1000) post-neonatal children with acute bacterial meningitis treated between August 1991 and November 1992 at the Emergency Paediatric Unit, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, had co-existing localized extracranial infections (LEI). Nineteen had bronchopneumonia (of which 14 were in combination with other infections), two had dysentery and one each acute otitis media, orbital cellulitis, and purulent conjunctivitis. LEI were significantly more frequent in children < or = 2 years, and in children with delayed presentation and delayed diagnosis a

A 70-year-old white woman presented to her ophthalmologist with bacterial conjunctivitis resistant to treatment. The relationship between the patient's globe and superior orbital rim prompted high clinical suspicion of an occult foreign body as the cause. The following article describes the office visits preceding the discovery of two adhered soft contact lenses lodged in the superior fornix of the right eye that had been hidden for 15 years. We discuss the role her unique orbital anatomy played in successfully concealing these foreign bodies for over a decade. In addition, we present an algor

From May 1987 to September 1994, 19 eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) originating from scattered locations on Long Island, New York (USA) were presented with one or more of the following signs: listlessness, ocular and nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and otitis media. Numerous species of bacteria and yeast were isolated by aerobic culture. Histopathologic findings confirmed chronic active bacterial infections. Toxicologic analyses of livers revealed elevated concentrations of chlordane metabolites in two diseased turtles. A third turtle liver contained residues of

We have analyzed retrospectively fifty conjunctival samples from infants less than one month of age affected with conjunctivitis. Of these samples, 84% had a positive bacterial culture, with the microorganisms isolated, in order of frequency, being: Staphylococcus epidermidis (14%), Staphylococcus aureus (14%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (12%), Haemophilus sp, Chlamydia and alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus (8%). All of these showed a high sensitivity to most of the drugs tested, except to penicillin and its derivatives. Cefotaxime, ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin showed the highest in vitro activitie

This study aims to report an acute dacryocystitis associated with Raoultella planticola infection. The patient's medical records and laboratory were thoroughly assessed. A thorough literature search was performed in PubMed database. An additional search was made in Google Scholar to complete the collected items. This is the first recorded case of acute dacryocystitis attributed to Raoultella planticola infection. A limited number of studies has related this pathogen with conjunctivitis. Acute dacryocystitis on rare occasions can also be caused by atypical organisms. Swabs must be obtained and

In this case report, a 42-year-old man who had sex with other men presented with conjunctivitis, which later was diagnosed as gonorrhoeal conjunctivitis. Gonorrhoeal conjunctivitis is associated with a high risk of severe eye infections and resulting complications. It is important to perform swabs for gonorrhoea from all relevant anatomical locations. Through complete microbiological diagnostics and treatment with recommended antibiotics, a gonorrhoeal conjunctivitis infection can be effectively treated.
