Assessment of the risk of transmission of N meningitidis in a classroom setting.

AIM: To evaluate the risk of colonisation with N meningitidis among university classroom contacts of a student with invasive meningococcal disease. METHODS: Throat cultures were obtained from classmates and faculty exposed to a university student with meningococcal disease. Exposures to the index case were quantified using a questionnaire. RESULTS: None of the 41 students and staff from whom cultures were obtained showed evidence of colonisation with N meningitidis. The contacts had spent an average of 13.5 h in class with the index case during the 2 days prior to the onset of her illness.

Abnormal bleeding associated with reproductive tract infection.

Reproductive tract infection is an often unrecognized, but relatively common, cause of abnormal reproductive tract bleeding. Postcoital bleeding, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and oral contraceptive break-through bleeding are potentially infection-related complaints. The microorganisms most often associated with abnormal reproductive tract bleeding include: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Herpes simplex virus type 2, and microorganisms associated with bacterial vaginosis. The clinical conditions cervicitis, endometritis, and pelvic inflammatory disease and the related microorganisms

Online Learning for Foot Contact Detection of Legged Robot Based on Data Stream Clustering.

Foot contact detection is critical for legged robot running control using state machine, in which the controller uses different control modules in the leg flight phase and landing phase. This paper presents an online learning framework to improve the rapidity of foot contact detection in legged robot running. In this framework, the Gaussian mixture model with three sub-components is adopted to learn the contact data vectors corresponding to running on flat ground, running upstairs, and running downstairs. An online data stream learning algorithm is used to update the model. To deal with the di

Identifying asymptomatic healthcare workers with COVID-19 in a community hospital: an institution's experience.

The outbreak related to SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 has been classified as a pandemic. Many healthcare institutions enacted policies to limit the … e learned two valuable lessons that have redefined our practice: 1) the recognition that aggressive contact tracing provides greater yield than testing everyone and 2) organizations must implement effective social distancing both within each department and how departments interact with each other to limit the scope of contract tracing.

Nonoccupational post-exposure prophylaxis source tracing: is it really feasible in Australia?

OBJECTIVE: A Swiss nonoccupational post-exposure prophylaxis (NPEP) source-tracing study successfully reduced unnecessary NPEP prescriptions by recruiting and testing source partners of unknown HIV serostatus. The Victorian NPEP Service in Australia attempted to replicate this study with the addition of HIV rapid testing and a mobile service. METHODS: Patients presenting to two busy NPEP sites who reported a source partner of unknown HIV status were routinely asked if their source could be traced. If the exposed person indicated that their source partner was traceable they were asked to conta

[Microepidemics of tuberculosis; apropos of 2 school outbreaks in the area 15 of the Valencia community].

Schools are settings with high concentrations of young people with little exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and greater risk of developing disease when infection occurs as the result of sporadic localized outbreaks. We studied two outbreaks in two elementary schools (A and B) after two cases of bacilliferous pulmonary tuberculosis were detected in teachers in 1990 and 1994. Contacts were trace din school A by the primary care physician and in school B by the pneumologist and public health authorities. Contacts were classified as belonging to the risk group (RG) or the low risk group (LRG)

Value of risk-contact data from digital contact monitoring apps in infectious disease modeling.

In this paper, we present a simple method to integrate risk-contact data, obtained via digital contact monitoring (DCM) apps, in conventiona … g self-reported data from the health surveillance app COVID RADAR and proximity-based data from the contact tracing app CoronaMelder. For both data sources, our corresponding estimates of the effective reproduction number agree both in time and magnitude with estimates based on other more detailed data sources such as daily numbers of cases and hospitalizations. …

HIV testing during systematic screening for tuberculosis among household contacts in high-tuberculosis burden settings: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis household contacts are at elevated risk of HIV, and systematic screening for tuberculosis is an opportunity for people to know their status. We aimed to assess the coverage and positivity of HIV testing during household systematic screening for tuberculosis. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42024471979), we searched MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, and Africa Wide databases from Jan 1, 2000, to June 24, 2025. The primary analysis population was household contacts of people with tuberculosis without known HIV. Studies were included if

Tuberculosis outbreak in a pre-primary and primary school in Barcelona, Spain.

BACKGROUND: In June 2022, a case of non-bacillary pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) was reported in a 10-year-old girl attending a primary school in Barcelona. A second pediatric case from the same school was identified in October 2022, prompting the declaration of a TB outbreak and the initiation of an epidemiological investigation. METHODS: Contact tracing was conducted using the concentric circles approach, targeting household contacts, classmates, and school staff. Tuberculin skin tests were administered and read 72 h later. Whole genome sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates was per…

mHealth-supported tuberculosis contact investigation by community health workers in high-burden countries: a scoping review.

Mobile health (mHealth) implementation strategies in tuberculosis (TB) contact investigations are intended to increase community health workers' (CHWs) engagement in TB contact investigations and case detection. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize existing evidence on the design and development of acceptable and feasible mHealth implementation strategies for CHW-led TB contact investigations. We conducted a scoping review following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for Englis

Community views on active case finding for tuberculosis in low- and middle-income countries: a qualitative evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Active case finding (ACF) refers to the systematic identification of people with tuberculosis in communities and amongst populations who do not present to health facilities, through approaches such as door-to-door screening or contact tracing. ACF may improve access to tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment for the poor and for people remote from diagnostic and treatment facilities. As a result, ACF may also reduce onward transmission. However, there is a need to understand how these programmes are experienced by communities in order to design appropriate services. OBJECTIVES: To sy…

Epidemiologic Characteristics of Mpox among People Experiencing Homelessness, Los Angeles County, California, USA, 2022.

In Los Angeles County, California, USA, public health surveillance identified 118 mpox cases among persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) d … ients stayed at multiple locations during the 3-week incubation period. Public health follow-up and contact tracing detected no secondary mpox cases among PEH in congregate shelters or encampments. Equitable efforts should continue to identify, treat, and prevent mpox among PEH, who often experience severe disease.

Excess Risk of Tuberculosis Infection Among Extra-household Contacts of Tuberculosis Cases in an African City.

BACKGROUND: Although households of tuberculosis (TB) cases represent a setting for intense transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, household exposure accounts for <20% of transmission within a community. The aim of this study was to estimate excess risk of M. tuberculosis infection among household and extra-household contacts of index cases. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study in Kampala, Uganda, to delineate social networks of TB cases and matched controls without TB. We estimated the age-stratified prevalence difference of TB infection between case and control networks, partit

A quantitative assessment of epidemiological parameters required to investigate COVID-19 burden.

Solid estimates describing the clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infections are still lacking due to under-ascertainment of asymptomatic and mild-disease cases. In this work, we quantify age-specific probabilities of transitions between stages defining the natural history of SARS-CoV-2 infection from 1965 SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals identified in Italy between March and April 2020 among contacts of confirmed cases. Infected contacts of cases were confirmed via RT-PCR tests as part of contact tracing activities or retrospectively via IgG serological tests and followed-up for symptoms and clinic…

An office building outbreak: the changing epidemiology of tuberculosis in Shenzhen, China.

Tuberculosis (TB) is generally considered a disease that principally afflicts the low-income segments of a population. In the Nanshan District of Shenzhen, China, with the economic transformation and a new Headquarters Economy (HE) emerging, there are now more cases in office workers than in manufacturing workers. To illustrate this trend, we describe a small TB outbreak in an office building located in the centre of the rapidly growing HE district. Two active pulmonary tuberculosis cases were found in workers who shared an office, and whole genome sequencing showed that the genetic distance b
