OBJECTIVE: The US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (USMEC) is the first national guidance containing evidence-based recommendations for contraception. We describe provider attitudes about contraceptive safety before and after the 2010 USMEC release.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate which characteristics of women and healthcare professionals (HCPs) were associated with changing to another combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) method after contraceptive counselling.
METHODS: CHOICE was a cross-sectional survey in which 18,787 women were counselled about combined hormonal contraceptives, during which their contraceptive methods preferred both prior to and after counselling were recorded. Using data from a cross-sectional, statewide survey of 1,720 Texas ninth graders in 13 school districts, a model of psychosocial predictors of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related sexual risk behavior was tested. Educational efforts to prevent the spread of AIDS require a combination of accurate information and the application of that information to personal behavior. In this preliminary study, a scale was developed to evaluate the social and interpersonal skills of adolescents in AIDS-related and non-AIDS-related interactions. In August 1987, a letter, informational pamphlet and order coupon for free mail-order condoms were sent to an experimental group of teenage males 16-17 years of age. An experimental design was used to measure the impact of the mailing on teenagers' knowledge, attitudes and behavior. BACKGROUND: The undue resistance to intrauterine device (IUD) use seen in several settings does not seem to occur in the Family Planning Unit of UNIFESP-EPM (São Paulo Federal University, Brazil). In fact, the Copper T 380A IUD in this clinic has reached an outstanding importance and this motivated us to present our differing experience. The prevalence of this method in this clinic is as high as 40%. This contrasts to the low use in the rest of the country, where tubal ligation is by far the most used contraceptive method (40%) and where IUD is inexpressive (1.1%).

Urinary tract infection of men with spinal cord injuries has been associated with a high incidence of colonization of the patients with gram-negative bacilli. We have examined the factors influencing colonization of 119 patients with Pseudomonas and Klebsiella and studied methods of reducing this colonization. Sixty-eight homosexually active men attending an STD clinic were questioned to ascertain the percentage of the time they did not use condoms during anal intercourse, and the reasons for this. The objective of this analysis was to assess the effect of introducing the diaphragm on condom use patterns. The physician must screen patients for risk of exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This requires direct and specific questioning about blood product exposure, sexual practices and use of intravenous drugs. If risk factors are uncovered, patients must then be counseled on how to minimize their risk. The screening process is potentially uncomfortable for both the physician and the patient. However, intensive educational efforts, including behavioral changes, are necessary to reduce the number of HIV-infected individuals.
