Does Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation reduce central and peripheral muscle fatigue in recreational runners? A triple-blind, sham-controlled, randomized, crossover clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Runners seek health benefits and performance improvement. However, fatigue might be considered a limiting factor. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been investigated to improve performance and reduce fatigue in athletes. While some studies showing that tDCS may improve a variety of physical measures, other studies failed to show any benefit. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute effects of tDCS on central and peripheral fatigue compared to a sham intervention in recreational runners. METHODS: This is a triple-blind, controlled, crossover study of 30 recreational runne

Modafinil improves information processing speed and increases energetic resources for orientation of attention in narcoleptics: double-blind, placebo-controlled ERP studies with low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent neuroimaging studies in narcolepsy discovered significant gray matter loss in the right prefrontal and frontomesial cortex, a critical region for executive processing. In the present study, event-related potential (ERP) low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) was used to investigate cognition before and after modafinil as compared with placebo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design, 15 patients were treated with a 3-week fixed titration scheme of modafinil and placebo. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), M

Characterisation of epidermal regeneration in vivo: a 60-day follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: To characterise the long-term course of epidermal regeneration in a suction-blister wound model in healthy humans. METHOD: A single-centre, prospective cohort study was conducted. Suction blister wounds of 8mm diameter were created on the volar forearms of healthy volunteers. Planimetry was used to measure the wound surface area. Transepidermal water loss was estimated to characterise the skin barrier function. Skin brightness was measured using the chromametric luminance L* parameter and skin (visco)elastic properties were measured by a controlled suction device. RESULTS: Thirty-

The effect of colchicine on coagulation in patients with chronic coronary disease who use vitamin K antagonists.

BACKGROUND: Low-dose (0.5 mg/day) colchicine improves cardiovascular outcomes in patients with stable coronary disease. Around 10-15% of these patients simultaneously use anticoagulant therapy, including vitamin-K antagonists (VKAs). In vitro studies and case reports have described a possible interaction between colchicine and VKAs leading to increased INR, but controlled studies are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a drug-drug interaction between low-dose colchicine and VKAs in patients with chronic coronary disease. METHODS: This study was a sub-anal

Oxygen metabolism and catecholamine secretion during chloralose anesthesia in lambs.

Anesthetic agents are required when restraining animals in most forms of animal research. In particular, alpha-chloralose is a widely used anesthetic for respiratory and cardiovascular research despite limited controlled studies investigating whether chloralose could represent a variable influencing cardiorespiratory reflexes in acute animal studies. We previously used a chronically-instrumented neonatal lamb model to determine that chloralose had important effects on oxygen delivery and on basal hemodynamics. To investigate the influence of chloralose on oxygen metabolism and catecholamine se

Association between hypocalcemia and mortality in trauma patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The trauma triad of death, consisting of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy, has long been recognized as a major cause of mortality in trauma patients. Recently, hypocalcemia has emerged as a fourth component that plays a critical role in the prognosis of these patients. The objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the association between hypocalcemia and mortality among trauma patients. METHODS: The authors systematically reviewed studies published in English from OVID, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases between January 1, 2000 and October 31, 2024. Randomized controlled t

Effect of Brief Mindfulness Meditation Interventions on Heart Rate Variability in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is considered as an objective assessment of stress, that considerably increased the last decades. The influence of Brief Mindfulness Meditation (BMM) on HRV contains gaps in the literature. This study aims to investigate the influence of BMM on HRV. A systematic search was conducted in four databases (i.e., PubMed NCBI, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science). To be included, these studies were required to evaluate HRV before and during or after a BMM intervention. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated with the revised Cochrane Risk

Gut microbiota-generated trimethylamine N-oxide from dietary choline and glucose homeostasis in humans.

The causal relationship between gut microbiota-generated trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and type 2 diabetes remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that gut microbiota-generated increases in plasma TMAO concentrations will impair insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in healthy, sedentary humans. To address this, we performed two studies utilizing a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Eligible participants (age of 35 ± 16 yr for the acute study and 46 ± 14 yr for the short-term study) consumed a 1,000 mg/day dose of choline bitartrate and placebo (maltodextrin)
