Enabling children with medical needs to attend mainstream education can be a challenge for parents, teachers and health-care professionals. A lack of national standards on the management of continence in schools results in enormous variations in practice. This paper describes a collaborative approach to address the issues in schools in Manchester.

Extremely aggressive patients in mental institutions constitute a threat to staff and other patients that usually necessitates the use of physical restraints. With chronically aggressive patients this cycle of behaviors is defeating for both the staff and the patient. In this case history the authors describe how positive and negative reinforcement and shaping were used to alter the previously unmanageable aggression of a 36-year-old male psychiatric patient.

AIM: Imitation provides a foundation for acquiring a wide range of knowledge and skills; accordingly, early imitation may contribute to the development of later adaptive behavior encompassing conceptual, practical, and social skills. The present study examined whether imitation at 14 months predicts adaptive behavior at 8 years of age in a general population sample.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children (HBC Study), a prospective birth cohort of children in Japan (n = 724). Adaptive behavior at 8 years of age was assessed using the Vineland Adaptiv

The costly provision of public goods serves as a model problem for the evolution of cooperative behavior, presenting a social dilemma between the collective benefits of shared resources and the individual incentive to free-ride in resource production. The spatial structure of populations can also impact cooperation over public goods, as diffusion of public goods and intentional motion of individuals towards regions with greater resources can interact with population and public goods dynamics to produce heterogeneous patterns in the spatial distribution of strategies and resources. In this pape…

The aim was to determine power of nondental background factors to predict behavior-management problems at the first dental visits of 3-yr-old children. A total of 273 children from three kinds of residential area--city, town, and rural area--in Sweden took part. The parents were interviewed before the child's dental visit. The behavior of the child was rated by registering the degree of acceptance according to the method of HOLST & CROSSNER. The following steps were rated: entering the dental treatment room, mirror in mouth, probe on fingernail and tooth, air-blower on hand and in mouth, sitti

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a high-prevalence personality disorder characterized by subtle but stable interpersonal dysfunction. There have been only limited studies addressing the behavioral patterns and cognitive features of OCPD in interpersonal contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate how behaviors differ between OCPD individuals and healthy controls (HCs) in the context of guilt-related interpersonal responses.
METHOD: A total of 113 participants were recruited, including 46 who were identified as having OCPD and 67 HCs. Guilt-related int

A necessary prerequisite for the accumulation of beneficial knowledge, or 'cumulative cultural evolution', is the sharing of information via social learning. Yet little work in the field of cultural evolution has examined the mechanisms that support information sharing in the face of exploitative information free-riding and information hoarding. We ran a series of online interactive experiments (N = 716) combined with computational reinforcement and social learning models to test whether the mechanism of reputation-based partner choice can effectively support information sharing. Participants

Here we investigated the temporal perception of self- and other-generated actions during sequential joint actions. Participants judged the perceived time of two events, the first triggered by the participant and the second by another agent, during a cooperative or competitive interaction, or by an unspecified mechanical cause. Results showed that participants perceived self-generated events as shifted earlier in time (anticipation temporal judgment bias) and non-self-generated events as shifted later in time (repulsion temporal judgment bias). This latter effect was observed independently from

In response to three surveys of (mostly) cognitive-behavioral practitioners about barriers to treatment success with cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social phobia (McAleavey, Castonguay, & Goldfried, 2014-this issue; Szkodny, Newman, & Goldfried, 2014-this issue; Wolf & Goldfried, 2014-this issue), the author proposes several methods for tapping clinical expertise in the development and dissemination of psychological interventions. These include: following surveys with interviews of a subset of clinicians to obtain richer informa

In the past few years, some companies have not just weathered the economic storm: They've emerged stronger than ever. How did such players as Four Seasons, Sephora, and Standard Chartered Bank defy conventional logic? Instead of pursuing a single ambition, such as profits, employees defined a collective ambition. As a result, those organizations deepened their engagement with employees and other stakeholders and became sustainably profitable. Purpose, a company's reason for existence, is the central element of collective ambition. The other elements--vision, targets and milestones, strategic a

Recent research presents Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy (ARET) for treatment of phobia of cockroaches as a potentially effective technique. However, to the authors' knowledge no studies have been published concerning the Human-Computer-Interaction issues of such a system. The aim of this paper is to report some preliminary data on how patients, therapists and an Augmented Reality system collaborate and interact during the therapeutic process. The results show that the therapeutic process is distributed between individuals (patient and therapist) and artifacts (e.g. AR cockroaches, a comput

LEGO therapy and the Social Use of Language Programme (SULP) were evaluated as social skills interventions for 6-11 year olds with high functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome. Children were matched on CA, IQ, and autistic symptoms before being randomly assigned to LEGO or SULP. Therapy occurred for 1 h/week over 18 weeks. A no-intervention control group was also assessed. Results showed that the LEGO therapy group improved more than the other groups on autism-specific social interaction scores (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale). Maladaptive behaviour decreased significantly more in the LEGO and S

H. H. Clark (1992) argues that successful referencing depends on speakers and listeners working together to establish shared perspectives on target objects. In his collaborative referencing model, he identifies 3 phases in the referencing process: initiation, refashioning, and acceptance. For referencing tasks, successful collaboration can be seen in the streamlining of referencing expressions and in the decrease of overt collaborative effort across trials. Although previous studies have shown that speakers with aphasia can be successful on referencing tasks, they have not examined how that su

Maternal stress can significantly affect offspring fitness. In laboratory rodents, chronically stressed mothers provide poor maternal care, resulting in pups with hyperactive stress responses. These hyperactive stress responses are characterized by high glucocorticoid levels in response to stressors plus poor negative feedback, which can ultimately lead to decreased fitness. In degus (Octodon degus) and other plural breeding rodents that exhibit communal care, however, maternal care from multiple females may buffer the negative impact on pups born to less parental mothers. We used wild, free-l

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed weaknesses in health systems globally, highlighting chronic underinvestment, fragmentation, and a lack of preparedness with catastrophic impact on public health, economies and societies. Lessons learned reconfirmed the necessity to build health systems resilience, integrating efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health security in tandem. RESULTS: This study identified 63 global and regional policies, collaborations, and investments (collectively termed “initiatives”) that came out post-COVID-19 and reviewed them in reference to their

A consortium of 22 U.S. academic institutions is currently participating in the Rwanda Human Resources for Health Program (HRH Program). Led by the Rwandan Ministry of Health and funded by both the U.S. Government and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the primary goal of this seven-year initiative is to help Rwanda train the number of health professionals necessary to reach the country's health workforce targets. Since 2012, the participating U.S. academic institutions have deployed faculty from a variety of health-related disciplines and clinical specialties to Rwanda.

Human cooperation is often explained through motivations and values, but it is also a strategic and evolutionary problem: locally advantageous behavior can erode the collective arrangements on which everyone depends. Dawkins' gene-centered view remains useful here, not as a moral theory of selfish people, but as a way to track how lower-level selection can destabilize higher-level organization. I argue, however, that cooperation is stabilized by a broader repertoire than external punishment alone. Repeated interaction, partner choice, aligned incentives, and architectural constraints can all m

Participation equity is essential for ensuring that students gain cognitive and social benefits from collaborative learning, yet there is a lack of quantitative benchmarks for interpreting participation and opportunity distributions in small-group collaboration. This study focuses on two turn-based analytical dimensions of participation equity: participation equality, measured by students' shares of speaking turns, and opportunity equality, measured by students' shares of addressed opportunities. Using the standard deviation of these rates, the study establishes preliminary, context-specific s

INTRODUCTION: The multidisciplinary ecosystem to study life course determinants and prevention of early-onset burdensome multimorbidity (MELD-B) project examined early-life factors that contribute to the risk of developing multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) in adulthood. Insights from an initial stakeholder workshop shaped the project's direction and priorities. To continue this collaborative approach, we developed a second workshop with public contributors to reflect on how our research aligns with current early-life policies. We defined these as policies that support children and their fam

BACKGROUND: Large scale collaborative or research centers are designed to accelerate scientific progress, promote sustained collaboration, and bridge gaps across areas of expertise. Traditionally, metrics of evaluation for such centers have focused on quantifiable outcomes, such as number and impact of publications. These take time to materialize yet formation, growth, and evolution of collaborative ties, which are fundamental to achieve these quantifiable outcomes, are seldom examined.
PURPOSE: To investigate collaborative ties, we applied social network analysis to the NIH-funded Center for
