In September of 2010, Brewer's Bay reef, located in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), was simultaneously affected by abnormally high temperatures and the passage of a hurricane that resulted in the mass bleaching and fragmentation of its coral community. An outbreak of a rapid tissue loss disease among coral colonies was associated with these two disturbances. Gross lesion signs and lesion progression rates indicated that the disease was most similar to the Caribbean coral disease white plague type 1. Experiments indicated that the disease was transmissible through direct contact between colon

Urban zones are rapidly expanding worldwide, exposing organisms to complex and multidimensional stressors. However, linking organismal responses to environmental change at ecologically relevant scales remains a major challenge. To investigate the constraints imposed on fish living in coastal urban environments, we apply a landscape-scale framework to identify molecular signatures associated with human activities. Using transcriptomes from a common coral reef fish, Chrysiptera cyanea, sampled across 18 coastal sites in Okinawa, Japan, we implement scalable analytical and visualisation tools and

Crown-of-thorns seastar (CoTS) predation is a major driver of coral loss on Indo-Pacific reefs, yet the causes of their episodic outbreaks remain debated. One hypothesis suggests that increased nutrient inputs enhance phytoplankton availability, removing food limitation for planktotrophic CoTS larvae. However, field data on larval distribution and associated water quality (WQ) remain limited. We present the first comprehensive dataset on CoTS larvae and WQ parameters-temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), and phytoplankton cell counts-c

Site fidelity, space use, and dispersal are commonly estimated with acoustic telemetry (AT) to help inform management and conservation. These behaviors can change with age, habitat and environmental conditions and our ability to accurately estimate them is affected by a study's inference power (design components that affect how accurately detection data represents a species' movements). Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) have been extensively studied with AT over a range of time periods and regions, although primarily at artificial reefs (AR). Here, we use large (> 12 km2) acoustic positioning

Marine reserves are effective tools for protecting marine resources and ecosystems. However, financing their establishment and maintenance remains a challenge for many locales. Tourists and scuba divers are known to place a premium on pristine ecological conditions typically found inside marine reserves, which can be monetized in some cases by introducing a user fee. Here, we conducted a willingness-to-pay (WTP) study with a survey of 170 scuba divers who visited the Great Barrier Reef. We tested scuba divers' WTP for differing ecological conditions, as well as the protection status of dive si

Evaluating the response of organisms to stress assumes that functional benchmarks are available against which the response can be gauged, but this expectation remains unfulfilled for many taxa. As a result, attempts to describe the organismic effects of environmental degradation and physiological stress can prove misleading. Functional benchmarks and the effects of stress are particularly germane to coral reefs that globally are exposed to significant environmental challenges, and in this study, we compiled data on scleractinian corals to describe a reference against which stress responses can…

Species of the Vibrio genus occupy diverse aquatic environments ranging from brackish water to warm equatorial seas to salty coastal regions. More than 80 species of Vibrio have been identified, many of them as pathogens of marine organisms, including fish, shellfish, and corals, causing disease and wreaking havoc on aquacultures and coral reefs. Moreover, many Vibrio species associate with and thrive on chitinous organisms abundant in the ocean. Among the many diverse Vibrio species, the most well-known and studied is Vibrio cholerae, discovered in the 19th century to cause cholera in humans …

Foundational habitats such as seagrasses and coral reefs are at severe risk globally from climate warming. Infectious disease associated with warming events is both a cause of decline and an indicator of stress in both habitats. Since new approaches are needed to detect refugia and design climate-smart networks of marine protected areas, we test the hypothesis that the health of eelgrass (Zostera marina) in temperate ecosystems can serve as a proxy indicative of higher resilience and help pinpoint refugia. Eelgrass meadows worldwide are at risk from environmental stressors, including climate w…

Cyanide fishing is a method employed to capture marine fish alive on coral reefs. They are shipped to markets for human consumption in Southeast Asia, as well as to supply the marine aquarium trade worldwide. Although several techniques can be used to detect cyanide in reef fish, there is still no testing method that can be used to survey the whole supply chain. Most methods for cyanide detection are time-consuming and require the sacrifice of the sampled fish. Thiocyanate anion (SCN(-)) is a metabolite produced by the main metabolic pathway for cyanide anion (CN(-)) detoxification. Our study …

Spherulites are radial distributions of acicular crystals, common in biogenic, geologic, and synthetic systems, yet exactly how spherulitic crystals nucleate and grow is still poorly understood. To investigate these processes in more detail, we chose scleractinian corals as a model system, because they are well known to form their skeletons from aragonite (CaCO3) spherulites, and because a comparative study of crystal structures across coral species has not been performed previously. We observed that all 12 diverse coral species analyzed here exhibit plumose spherulites in their skeletons, wit

Recent studies report conflicting results concerning the effects of eutrophication on coral reproduction. The present study examines reprodu … successful production of larvae of S. pistillata. In view of the recent severe deterioration of the coral reefs of Eilat and their present critical state of health, the only chance for their renewal is the use of immediate, prudent and rational protection measures against all man-made perturbations.

As a typical turbid-water reef coral, Turbinaria peltata shows strong tolerance to high temperature and sediment disturbance, yet its basin-scale niche drivers and glacial distribution dynamics across the Indo-West Pacific remain unclear. Here we constructed optimized MaxEnt models using 322 independent distribution points and 21 non-collinear marine environmental variables for modern and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) scenarios. The model average test AUC reached 0.9874, showing excellent predictive performance. Water depth acted as the most influential predictor in the model (contribution = 44.7

Predicting species resilience to climate change generally focuses on species life history and ecology, overlooking genomic changes following disturbances. After consecutive cyclones and heatwaves, coral-dwelling Gobiodon gobies have experienced extreme population and group size reductions, and slower recovery rates than their coral hosts. To assess genomic contributions to this vulnerability, we analysed multiple Gobiodon species for population structure (1) among three locations in western Oceania and (2) pre- and post-disturbances at the central location that underwent the same cyclones and

A key challenge for evolutionary biologists is to determine conditions under which individuals benefit from a contribution to public goods [1, 2]. For humans, it has been observed that punishment of free riders may promote contributions [3, 4], but the conditions that lead to stable cooperation based on punishment remain hotly debated [5-8]. Here we present empirical evidence that public goods may emerge as a by-product of self-serving punishment in interactions between coral reef fishes and parasitic saber-tooth blennies that stealthily attack their fish victims from behind to take a bite [9]

This study confirms the presence of the toxigenic benthic dinoflagellates Gambierdiscus belizeanus and Ostreopsis spp. in the central Red Sea. To our knowledge, this is also the first report of these taxa in coastal waters of Saudi Arabia, indicating the potential occurrence of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in that region. During field investigations carried out in 2012 and 2013, a total of 100 Turbinaria and Halimeda macroalgae samples were collected from coral reefs off the Saudi Arabian coast and examined for the presence of Gambierdiscus and Ostreopsis, two toxigenic dinoflagellate genera…

The humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) is a large coral reef fish of high ecological and economic importance, whose epidermal mucus microbiota plays a critical role in host defense, immune regulation, and environmental adaptation. However, the influence of host sex on the structure and functional potential of epidermal mucus microbiota remains poorly understood. In this study, epidermal mucus samples were collected from sexually mature female and male humphead wrasse, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed to systematically compare microbial community composition, diversity, and f

Excessive nitrogen runoff from agricultural and urban sources poses a significant threat to coastal ecosystems. Elevated dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) levels contribute to algal blooms, hypoxia, and coral degradation, undermining the health and resilience of the reef system. In addition to land-based management, bivalve aquaculture has been proposed as a potential solution for mitigating nitrogen loads in coastal environments. However, studies assessing the suitability, scale, and potential benefits of such production for reducing impacts of nitrogen runoff are often lacking. This study e

This study investigated Enterobacteriales and their antimicrobial resistance in green sea turtles captured adjacent to the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and proximate to urban development. Cloacal swabs were taken from 73 green turtles between 2015 and 2016. A total of 154 out of 341 Gram-negative bacterial isolates were identified as Enterobacteriales that represent 16 different species from 9 different genera. The dominant isolates were Citrobacter (30.52%), Edwardsiella (21.43%) and Escherichia (12.34%). The resistance against 12 antibiotics belonging to 6 different classes was determine

Aspergillus sydowii is a cosmopolitan fungus that has been responsible for the mass destruction of coral in the Caribbean Sea over the last 15years. To our knowledge, this study has found the first case of A. sydowii in the Mediterranean Sea, in marine-bottom sediments, water and calcareous shells of bivalve molluscs sampled during a campaign to characterise the mycobiota in the Port of Genoa (Italy). The area is characterised by adverse environmental conditions (high turbidity, organic pollution and high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds). These parameters, in combination wi
