The cultural and social consequences and effect on families of women's involvement in drug trafficking in Cameroon: crime and imprisonment.

The aim of the Idolé Foundation which was established in June 1993, is to help women discharged from prison. To achieve that aim, it has opened a centre where women are provided with free accommodation and training of various kinds, including sewing, dyeing, embroidery, soap-making, cooking and sex education. It has been observed that 30 per cent of these former prisoners were drug dependent and another 30 per cent had had contact with drugs without becoming dependent. These women continue to consume drugs while in prison, where they resort to a number of strategies to satisfy their craving an

Racially motivated hate crime exposure and birth outcomes: Analysis of US vital statistics data 1995-2020.

Exposure to racially motivated hate crime represents a salient form of structural and interpersonal racism that is associated with detrimental mental and physical health. Although prior research shows that stress during pregnancy can influence birth outcomes, empirical evidence linking hate crime exposure to adverse birth outcomes remains limited. Using National Vital Statistics Birth Data from 1995 to 2020 linked to county-level hate crime data, we use linear probability models and leverage variation in the timing of hate crimes in the county to examine the association between maternal exposu…

The relationship between alcohol consumption, social distancing, and crime rates: insights from the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: While there was a global shift in social interaction and alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, their associations with changes in crime rates remain underexplored. We aimed to examine the associations between crime rates and alcohol use within the context of pandemic-related social distancing. METHODS: We calculated crime rates across crime categories from 2011 to 2022 using crime statistics from the Korean National Police Agency. We estimated two linear regression models with the crime rate as the dependent variable. The first model examined the association of movie a…

Modelling the dark side of prison dynamics: Quantifying the criminogenic effects of petty crime offenders' incarceration.

Crime remains a persistent socio-economic challenge in South Africa, where the incarceration of petty offenders often exacerbates criminal behaviour. Empirical evidence suggests custodial sentencing for minor offences may accelerate progression to serious crime due to exposure to hardened offenders and criminogenic prison conditions. To investigate this, we develop a compartmental ODE model tracking eight population states: susceptibility, petty and serious crime, custodial and non-custodial sentencing, rehabilitation, and relapse pathways. In particular, the model has an explicit non-custodia…

Pathways to Mental Health: Exploring the Relationships Among Neighborhood Hostility, Crime, Built Environment, and Perceived Safety.

Neighborhood crime-related stressors and the built environment are important determinants of mental health, yet research on the pathways through which they affect individuals remains limited. This study draws on structural equation modeling and high-quality measures to test the pathways linking a novel measure of neighborhood-level hostility, crime, and built environment features to individuals' perceived safety and mental health. The results suggest that neighborhood crime and perceived safety are directly associated with men's, but not women's, mental health. Additionally, neighborhood hosti…

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Personality, and Crime: Distinct Associations among a High-Risk Sample of Institutionalized Youth.

Despite high rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and personality-related disturbances among delinquent juveniles, associations among ACEs, youth personality, and juvenile crime involvement are still unclear. High-risk samples of institutionalized youth are in specific need of a comprehensive assessment of ACEs and personality features in order to broaden the current knowledge on the occurrence and persistence of juvenile crime and to derive implications for prevention and intervention. We examined a heterogeneous high-risk sample of 342 adolescents (35.1% females, 64.9% males) aged b…

The Combination of Living in High Crime Neighborhoods and High Rumination Predicts Depressive Symptoms among Adolescents.

Living in high crime areas and rumination each have been identified as risk factors for depression among youth, yet it is unclear how crime and rumination may synergistically increase the risk of adolescent depression. Adolescents (N = 309; 51% female, Mage= 12.9, SD = 0.61) completed self-report measures of rumination, depressive symptoms, and provided local addresses, which were used to match police district crime statistics. Approximately one year later, participants again reported depressive symptoms. Moderation analyses indicated that the tendency to ruminate exacerbated the relationship …

Surviving All the Way to College: Pathways Out of One of America's Most Crime Ridden Cities.

The purpose of this study is to better understand the factors and processes related to resilience of youth who are among the most at risk for academic failure and involvement in the criminal justice system. To address the research questions about resilience and risk, in-depth interviews were conducted with a racially and ethnically diverse sample (N = 146) from one of the "most dangerous" cities in America. To obtain an objective assessment of risk, crime data were disaggregated by the city's census tracts. Respondents were recruited from a college campus that is located within the city limits…

Reactions to Trauma Over Time: Trajectories of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Survivors of Violent Crime.

Although experiencing crime is a common source of trauma, it remains unclear how the impact of violent crime translates into trajectories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following treatment. The purpose of the present study was to identify the proportion of survivors of violent crime whose PTSD symptoms remained clinically significant over time and assess their characteristics to inform treatment. The first objective of this study was to determine the trajectories of PTSD symptoms in survivors of violent crime. The second objective was to assess the demographic, trauma-relate…

Syndemics, violence and injury: exploring historical relationships between infectious disease epidemics and violent crime in South Africa.

This paper explores historical and contemporary intersections between mass-mortality epidemics and violent crime in South Africa, focusing on four major epidemics - Spanish Flu, tuberculosis, HIV, and Covid-19. The study integrates epidemiological data and contextual historical information such as crime statistics, archival records, and secondary scholarship to explore whether epidemic-driven mortality crises are associated with subsequent changes in violence and injury profiles. With the possible exception of gendered violence, the study finds little evidence that earlier epidemics directly c…

Modeling the Effect of Streetscape Environment on Crime Using Street View Images and Interpretable Machine-Learning Technique.

Street crime is a common social problem that threatens the security of people's lives and property. Understanding the influencing mechanisms of street crime is an essential precondition for formulating crime prevention strategies. Widespread concern has contributed to the development of streetscape environment features as they can significantly affect the occurrence of street crime. Emerging street view images are a low-cost and highly accessible data source. On the other hand, machine-learning models such as XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) usually have higher fitting accuracies than those…

This study performed main path analysis to explore the academic field of crime prevention. Studies were collected from the Web of Science database, and main path analysis was used to analyze the studies and identify influential authors and journals on the basis of the g-index and h-index. Cluster analysis was then performed to group studies with related themes. Wordle was used to output keywords and word clouds for each cluster, both of which were used as reference to name each cluster. Five clusters were identified, namely crime displacement control, crime prevention through environmental des…

Cooperative guardian offenders and sentencing outcomes: Evidence from criminal sentencing documents of child trafficking crime in China.

BACKGROUND: Studies have revealed that guardians who sold their children for profit comprise the majority of child traffickers in China. Although sentencing disparity has been a focal topic in judicial studies, few scholars have investigated the influence of the guardian relationship on criminal sentencing for child trafficking. OBJECTIVE: The current study sought a better understanding of sentencing practices on child traffickers in China, focusing on the effects of the victim-offender relationship (VOR) and post-crime attitudes (PCAs) on sentencing outcomes. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We re…

Connecting Child Maltreatment Risk With Crime and Neighborhood Disadvantage Across Time and Place: A Bayesian Spatiotemporal Analysis.

Child maltreatment is a major public health problem. Although maltreatment rates vary over time and are influenced by neighborhood characteristics, the unique effects of crime and disadvantage on risk are not well understood. This study utilized a Bayesian spatiotemporal approach to examine risk factors for substantiated child abuse and neglect over a 9-year period across zip codes in Davidson County, TN. Risk of child sexual and physical abuse decreased from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, risk of child neglect increased from 2011 to 2014, followed by a rapid decrease in risk. Whereas higher perce…

However, less is known about the dev … m early childhood showed that, for both genders, physical and emotional child abuse predicted adult crime indirectly through child and adolescent antisocial behavior, as well as adult partner and antisocial peer influences. However, for females, having an antisocial partner predicted an affiliation with antisocial peers, and that in turn predicted adult …

Is exposure to domestic violence and violent crime associated with bullying behaviour among underage adolescent psychiatric inpatients?

We examined the relationship of exposure to domestic violence and violence occurring outside home to bullying behaviour in a sample (508; 40.9% males, 59.1% females) of underage psychiatric inpatient adolescents. Participants were interviewed using K-SADS-PL to assess DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses and to gather information about domestic and other violence and bullying behaviour. Witnessing interparental violence increased the risk of being a victim of bullying up to 2.5-fold among boys. For girls, being a victim of a violent crime was an over 10-fold risk factor for being a bully-victim. Gende…
