Laryngitis and neutropenia from parvovirus-B19.

Parvovirus-B19 has been reported a rare cause of acute laryngitis. Here, we described an 11-month-old girl who had prolonged acute laryngitis and neutropenia associated with parvovirus-B19 infection. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy resulted in resolution of her symptoms, except neutropenia. We concluded that parvovirus-B19 can cause prolonged laryngitis and intravenous immunoglobulin treatment should be considered.

Thoracoabdominal asynchrony in acute upper airway obstruction in small children.

The assessment of the severity and response to therapy of acute upper airway obstruction (UAO) in small children relies on subjective parameters. Using a noncalibrated respiratory inductance plethysmograph (RIP), we quantitated the rib cage (RC) to abdominal (AB) asynchrony and the lag phase in chest wall expansion by the phase angle from the RC versus AB signal curve. Phase angles were obtained in 17 children aged 1 to 50 months with acute UAO and 30 normal control subjects. The phase angle in UAO (16 to 165 degrees; mean = 83.6 degrees) was significantly higher than in control subjects (3 to

Nasotracheal intubation in acute laryngotracheobronchitis.

The case histories of 150 children admitted to hospital with acute laryngotracheobronchitis (LTB) are reviewed. Relief of severe upper airway obstruction was achieved by nasotracheal intubation in 27 children (18%). There was no mortality in this series. Nasotracheal intubation is therefore a safe and effective means of treating severe LTB. In addition, the importance of meticulous nursing care is stressed.

Pediatric Dental Surgery Under General Anesthesia: Uncooperative Children.

Dental treatment of young pediatric patients can be confounded by lack of cooperation for dental rehabilitation procedures and even examination and/or radiographs. With the recent US Food and Drug Administration warning applied to many anesthetic/sedative agents for children less than 3 years old, a retrospective review of general anesthesia (GA) cases from 1 private pediatric dental practice was studied for age, gender, body mass index, anesthetic duration, airway management used, extent of dental surgical treatment, recovery time, and cardiac/pulmonary complications. For the 2016 calendar ye

Viral etiology and epidemiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections in Korean children.

Viral etiologic agents of acute lower respiratory tract infections were studied from November, 1990, through April, 1994, in Korean children. From 712 children who visited or were admitted to Seoul National University Children's Hospital because of acute lower respiratory tract infections, 804 nasal aspirates were collected; viral agents were detected by virus isolation and virus antigen was detected by indirect immunofluorescent staining. One or more viral agents were identified in 369 (45.9%) cases; of which 3.3% were mixed infections. The pathogens identified were respiratory syncytial viru

Etiology of acute respiratory infections in children in tropical southern India.

Nasopharyngeal secretions and throat-swab specimens from 809 children less than 6 years old with acute respiratory infection were examined by culture and indirect immunofluorescence for the presence of virus or viral antigen. Blood was cultured for the presence of bacteria in selected cases of lower respiratory infection (LRI); pleural fluid also was cultured in cases of empyema. Viruses were detected in 163 (49%) of 331 children with LRI. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was the commonest agent isolated (106 children). Other viruses isolated included parainfluenza viruses (36 children), aden

Pulmonary and systemic effects of increased negative inspiratory intrathoracic pressure in dogs.

Croup and epiglottitis, which cause greater than normal negative inspiratory intrathoracic pressure (NIIP), have been associated with pulmonary edema. To examine the effects of increased NIIP per se on blood gases, hemodynamics, and lung water content, we carried out 2 types of experiments in 18 anesthetized dogs. Short-term, low-pressure experiments (6 control dogs and 6 dogs that generated intratracheal pressures of -12 cm H2O during inspiration for 3 h) and long-term, high-pressure experiments (6 dogs that generated -20 cm H2O during inspiration for 6 h). In the short-term, low-pressure exp

Biomechanical assessment of dressage Spanish horses through accelerometry and the immediate effects of a single capacitive resistive electrical transfer session.

BACKGROUND: Capacitive resistive electrical transfer (CRET) is a non-invasive electromagnetic diathermic technique. The effect of its application 24 h prior to exercise, compared to a sham application performed with the device off, was evaluated in 8 Spanish Purebred dressage stallions. CRET was applied bilaterally on the neck, back, and croup. The horses wore an accelerometer fixed on the sternal area during a dressage test, and spatiotemporal stride parameters, total and dorsoventral (DVAA), longitudinal (LAA), and mediolateral accelerometric activities, as well as dorsoventral displacement,

Review on Clinical and Molecular Epidemiology of Human Rhinovirus-Associated Lower Respiratory Tract Infections in African and Southeast Asian Children.

BACKGROUND: The detection of human rhinoviruses (HRV) is highly prevalent in children with pneumonia, bronchiolitis, acute asthma and croup; however, there is also evidence that HRV is common in asymptomatic individuals. The majority of studies on the role of different HRV serotypes during acute respiratory tract infections episodes have limited sample size to fully characterize the epidemiology of HRV infection, including those from low-middle income countries, where the burden of childhood respiratory disease is greatest. METHODS: We systematically reviewed HRV clinical and molecular epidem

Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of acute respiratory virus infections in Vietnamese children.

Information about viral acute respiratory infections (ARIs) is essential for prevention, diagnosis and treatment, but it is limited in tropical developing countries. This study described the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of ARIs in children hospitalized in Vietnam. Nasopharyngeal samples were collected from children with ARIs at Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital 2 between April 2010 and May 2011 in order to detect respiratory viruses by polymerase chain reaction. Viruses were found in 64% of 1082 patients, with 12% being co-infections. The leading detected viruses were human

Correlations between climate factors and incidence--a contributor to RSV seasonality.

Respiratory syncytial virus is the most common respiratory virus infection in early childhood, causing a wide range of illness from mild colds to life-threatening croup, bronchiolitis and pneumonia that may require intensive care. Exactly which parameters contribute to the seasonality of RSV (and other respiratory viruses, such as influenza) and their comparative significance are the subject of ongoing intensive debate. This review article summarises the specific contributions and correlations between the incidence of RSV and various climate parameters. This systematic review of the literature

[Steroids in the critical care children with septic shock and other conditions].

Steroids are indicated in paediatric intensive care as anti-inflammatory drugs or for substitutive treatment. During septic shock, the incidence of adrenal insufficiency (AI) varies between 18 à 52%, depending on the relative or absolute nature of the AI. Contrary to adults, for whom long courses of low doses of corticosteroids were shown to reduce mortality and increased shock reversibility, particularly in those with a negative synacthene test, no study provided sufficient evidence to show a benefit of steroids in terms of outcome in children with septic shock. In neonates, AI occurs frequen

Outcome of Kawasaki disease in Barbados.

Kawasaki disease (KD) often presents as an acute multisystem febrile illness which is most often self-limiting. During an 11-year period, 39 patients with KD, aged 11 weeks to 15 years (mean 2.5 years), were admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Barbados. Eighty-seven per cent of children were less than 4 years of age. There were 26 males (67%) and 13 females (33%) with a sex ratio of 2:1. A peak occurrence was observed in 1985 and the mean hospital stay of cases was 12.7 days. Treatment regimens included antibiotics in 36 patients (93%), aspirin in 32 (82%) and steroids in 3 (7%). Epidemiological picture of respiratory viral infections in Croatia.

This paper presents the epidemiological study of respiratory viral infections in Croatia from 1 September 1986 till 31 August 1987. A total of 527 patients with acute respiratory diseases were examined. Their nasopharyngeal secretion and/or throat swab were taken and the viruses were demonstrated by the method of direct viral diagnosis (isolation and rapid immunofluorescent detection). This 12-month study on acute respiratory infections in Croatia in 1986/1987 shows that viruses were the agents in 47.2% of these infections. Out of a total of 527 patients with acute respiratory disease, 177 pat
