BACKGROUND: Acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a common condition in patients who visit otolaryngologists and ophthalmologists. These patients often complain of epiphora and blurred vision, and sometimes they suffer from acute or chronic dacryocystitis. Other causes of acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction include trauma, chronic inflammation, post-operative iatrogenic procedures, and tumors. Endo-DCR is a safe, quick, less traumatic, with minimal blood loss and post-operative discomfort and last but not the least, avoids external scar. It has high success rate in both primary and secondary cases. Fifty two cases of chronic dacryocystitis were treated by the endoscopic technique including 33 females and 19 males in mean age group 35.8 year, 29 left eye and 23 right eye with 8 patients cannulated with nasolacrimal tube with very good results and few complications.

A clinical study of the lacrimal complications of trachoma was conducted in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Of the 579 Saudi Arabian patients examined, 446 (77%) showed clinical evidence of trachoma, 62 of whom had severe inactive trachoma. In this last group the following lacrimal complications were observed: dry eye syndrome, punctal phimosis, punctal occlusion, canalicular occlusion, nasolacrimal-duct obstruction, dacryocystitis, dacryocystocele, and dacryocutaneous fistula. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the features of nasolacrimal duct MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue), and to explore the aetiology of chronic dacryocystitis.
METHOD: The mucous of nasolacrimal duct, nasal cavity, pharyngeal and trachea of 20 rabbits were studied, and the lymphoid tissue and HEV of them were compared.
RESULT: The number of lymphoid follicle and HEV in nasolacrimal duct epidermis were less than that in nasal cavity, pharyngeal and trachea (P<0.01).
CONCLUSION: In normal condition the immune response of nasolacrimal duct membranae is lower than other mucosa of head-neck.

Canaliculitis is a relatively rare dacryocanal infection which occurs most unilateral. It can easily be misinterpreted and not sufficiently treated. Typical agents of the canaliculitis are actinomyces, that can cause infections of the hollow spaces with formation of concrements. The clinical courses of two patients are shown. Solid-cast forming actinomycotic canaliculitis is an uncommon cause of unilateral chronic red eye resistant to conventional topical medical therapy. The authors report the history of a 62-year old woman who was complaining of mucopurulent discharge from the right lower canaliculus for a period of 12 months. Culture yielded a few colonies of Actinomyces. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a dilation of the right lower canaliculus.
