Anterior fontanelle imaging has traditionally been the mainstay of neonatal cranial ultrasonography (US). However, this traditional approach has limited diagnostic accuracy, which has led to increasing use of two alternate neurologic US imaging techniques: posterior fontanelle imaging and mastoid fontanelle imaging. These alternate techniques can help detect pathologic conditions and structural malformations in the neonatal brain. Posterior fontanelle imaging allows improved detection of intraventricular hemorrhage. This technique better demonstrates subtle differences in echogenicity between

We present a case of trans-sphenoidal encephalomeningocele in association with a posterior cranial fossa malformation which fulfils the criteria for the Dandy-Walker complex [1]. Congenital cardiovascular defects were also present. An abnormality of neural crest development may be responsible for the combined occurrence of these anomalies.

We present a 6-month-old girl with the unusual combination of microphthalmos, facial capillary hemangioma and Dandy-Walker malformation. This is the fourth case with such an association reported in the literature. On the basis of the experience with our patient and with those previously reported, we stress the importance of performing brain-imaging studies on all infants with large facial hemangiomas, or if unusual ophthalmic findings are present.

We describe two Hispanic brothers born to unrelated parents with van den Ende-Gupta syndrome (VDEGS), a distinctive combination of characteristic dysmorphic features, skeletal abnormalities, and cerebellar hyperplasia. This syndrome was previously delineated by van den Ende et al. [1992: Am J Med Genet 42:467-469] and Gupta et al. [1995: J Med Genet 32:809-812], with additional reports by Phadke et al. [1998: Am J Med Genet 77:16-18] and Bistritzer et al. [1993: Clin Genet 44:15-19]. This is the fifth report of VDEGS, which is characterized by blepharophimosis, narrow nose with hypoplastic ala

Noonan syndrome (NS) is the most common disease among RASopathies, characterized by short stature, distinctive facial features, congenital cardiac defects, and variable developmental delay. NS rarely presents with overt neurologic manifestations, in particular hydrocephalus. Recent evidence suggests that pathogenic variants in the gene RRAS2 are a rare cause of NS. Specifically, an RRAS2 pathogenic variant, p.Q72L, may be particularly severe, manifesting with lethal neurologic findings. Here, we report a NS patient with documented p.Q72L variant in RRAS2. The patient was identified in utero to

WLS (Wnt ligand secretion mediator or Wntless) orchestrates the secretion of all Wnt proteins, a family of evolutionary conserved proteins, involved in Wnt signaling pathway that has many essential biological functions including the regulation of development, cell proliferation, migration and apoptosis. Biallelic variants in WLS have recently been described in 10 patients with pleiotropic multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) known as Zaki syndrome. We identified a likely disease-causing variant in WLS (c.1579G>A, p.Gly527Arg) in a boy presented with a broad range of MCA including microcephaly,

The bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) is a rare acquired head movement disorder characterized by up and down or side-to-side movement, most commonly seen in the first decade of life. The syndrome occurs more often in lesions causing third ventricle dilatation such as suprasellar or third ventricle cyst, but it is also found in other pathologies associated with hydrocephalus like shunt dysfunctions, trapped fourth ventricle, congenital aqueductal stenosis, Dandy-Walker syndrome, and cerebellar malformations. The pathophysiology of this head movement has different origins theories; one states tha…

BACKGROUND: Tentorial hypoplasia is a rare congenital condition characterized by underdevelopment or absence of the tentorium cerebelli, a dural structure separating the cerebrum from the cerebellum. It is often detected incidentally on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and may be associated with conditions such as Dandy-Walker syndrome and Chiari malformation, although many cases remain asymptomatic. Imaging plays an essential role in identifying associated abnormalities when present.

Until now, few cases of partial trisomy of 3q due to segregation error of parental balanced translocation and segregation of a duplicated deficient product resulting from parental pericentric inversion have been reported so far. Only five cases of chromosomal insertion malsegregation involving 3q region are available yet, thus making it relatively rare. In this case report, we are presenting a unique case of discontinuous partial trisomy of 3q26.1-q28 region which resulted from a segregation error of two insertions involving 3q26.1 to 3q27.3 and 3q28 regions with ~21Mb and ~2Mb sizes, respecti

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to report our positive experience of using dexamethasone to treat 13 patients with symptomatic slit ventricle syndrome (SVS).
METHODS: Thirteen SVS patients who received dexamethasone during acute episodes were studied. The etiology for hydrocephalus was prematurity and intraventricular hemorrhage in 9 patients and neonatal meningitis, chorioamnionitis, Dandy-Walker variant, and congenital in 1 case each. The shunt was inserted at 1.8+/-1.0 months of age and SVS was diagnosed at 4.9+/-3.2 years of age.
RESULTS: All patients reported relief and shorter duration of

Recent research underscores the cerebellum's growing importance in forensic science and neurology, showing its functions extend beyond motor control, especially in identifying causes of death. Critical neuropathological markers including alpha-synuclein and tau protein aggregates, cellular degeneration, inflammation, and vascular changes are vital for identifying neurodegenerative diseases, injuries, and toxic exposures. Advanced forensic methods, such as Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), immunohistochemistry, and molecular analysis, have greatly improved the accuracy of diagnoses. Promising n

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of 3-dimensional ultrasonographic planar and nonplanar reslicing techniques.
METHODS: Fetuses with severe brain anomalies diagnosed by means of 2-dimensional ultrasonography were prospectively included in the study. Good-quality 3-dimensional volumes of the fetal head were obtained in each case. Subsequently, these volumes were reviewed with use of 3-dimensional extended imaging with Oblique View and DynamicMR (Medison Co, Ltd, Seoul, Korea).
RESULTS: Eight fetuses (mean gestational age, 23 weeks; range, 20-30 weeks) with th

Pathogenic variants in CCDC22 were initially described in 2012 in a large Australian family with intellectual disability and were subsequently noted to cause a phenotype consistent with the previously described Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome (RSS). The phenotypes of the original family were not described in detail and remains limited phenotypic data reported in medical literature. We detail the phenotypes of the original family, including newly diagnosed family members. With these eight phenotypic descriptions, more than triple the number of individuals for whom detailed clinical information is av

Antenatal posterior fossa cystic lesions are intimidating due to overlapping imaging features of benign and severe malformations. Sonographic assessment of the posterior fossa with good resolution median sagittal and axial views, either primary or secondarily reconstructed, plays the lead role in antenatal evaluation, further enhanced when sequential assessments are added. We present 10 cases of fetal posterior fossa cystic lesions diagnosed in the first and second trimesters that were sequentially analyzed and followed up till delivery or termination.
