The effect of Delta Sleep Inducing Peptide (DSIP) and arginine vasotocin (AVT) on motor activity and sleep was investigated in the rat. Motor activity was not significantly reduced during the 24 h following systemic DSIP administration (40-160 nmol/kg i.p.), nor were sleep and the power of the EEG delta-band significantly increased in the 2 hours following injection or infusion of DSIP into the lateral or third ventricle (7-24 nmol). Injection or infusion of AVT into the lateral or third ventricle (10(-15)-10(-19) mol) did not enhance sleep and the power of the EEG delta-band. Nevertheless, th

The most consistent electroencephalographic finding in 16 cases of Sturge-Weber syndrome was a unilateral reduction of background amplitude in the waking record. Comparable asymmetries were noted in those patients in whom sleep recording also was done. Physiologic responses (to hyperventilation and photic driving) usually were decreased on the involved side. These hemispheric electroencephalographic abnormalities are detectable in infancy even before the characteristic intracranial calification develops. Epileptiform activity, when focal, was limited to the involved hemisphere.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a promising technique that potentially influences cortical activity, mainly increasing electroencephalography (EEG) power spectrum activity in low-frequency oscillations, and demonstrates potential therapeutic benefits for various pathologic conditions, like depression and chronic pain. To learn further about taVNS brain mechanisms, the present study investigated how using a single taVNS session can affect brain oscillations in healthy subjects. 44 healthy participants were included in this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled tr

OBJECTIVE: Brain tumors are frequently accompanied by abnormal low frequency magnetic activity (ALFMA). The prevalence and clinical meaning of ALFMA are not well known, although a relation with epileptic brain tissue has been suggested. We studied the prevalence, characteristics and clinical correlates of ALFMA in 20 patients with brain tumors.
METHODS: In 20 patients with clinical seizures due to a supratentorial tumor, MEG was performed, followed by MR imaging. MEG signals were band pass-filtered (1-4 Hz); the sources of this activity were localized and projected onto the MRI of the patient

In the context of a study of the effects of gamma-vinyl-GABA (GVG) on seizure occurrence and on EEG abnormalities we present three cases with focal epilepsy in which new clinical and EEG paroxysmal manifestations were observed during GVG therapy. At that time, whereas an amelioration or no change in patients' habitual seizures were observed, myoclonic jerks appeared with related changes in the EEG paroxysmal abnormalities, represented by generalized polyspike and wave complexes. An electroclinical correlation was recorded in one case. These data indicate that, although occurring rarely, it is

From 1963 to 1970 the possibility of humoral transmission of delta (SWS)-EEG sleep in rabbits by, i.c.v. infusion of extracorporal dialysate from blood of the sinus confluens of donors kept asleep by electrical stimulation of the ventromedian intralaminar thalamus, has been established. From 1970 to 1977 we isolated, characterized and synthesized a nonapeptide called delta-sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) responsible for this effect. Subsequently, intravenous administration of DSIP was shown to produce, in different animals, sleep lasting for hours. Analogs with exchanged amino acids in the seque

BACKGROUND: The arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) family is divided into structurally distinct vertebrate and non-vertebrate groups. Expression of vertebrate AANATs is limited primarily to the pineal gland and retina, where it plays a role in controlling the circadian rhythm in melatonin synthesis. Based on the role melatonin plays in biological timing, AANAT has been given the moniker "the Timezyme". Non-vertebrate AANATs, which occur in fungi and protists, are thought to play a role in detoxification and are not known to be associated with a specific tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Underlying glutamate dysregulation in Alzheimer's disease can be worsened by environmental factors like manganese (Mn) exposure. This study examined how excess Mn affects glutamatergic signaling and neurotransmission in a beta-amyloid mouse model.
METHODS: APP/PSEN1 and control mice were exposed to systemic Mn subcutaneously. Gene expression, glutamate clearance dynamics, electroencephalography (EEG) activity, and sleep architecture were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Western blot, ex vivo hippocampal slices, and EEG recordings.
RESULTS: Mn exposu

INTRODUCTION: Anteroseptal accessory pathways (APs) are located in the apex of the triangle of Koch's connecting the atrial and ventricular septum in the region of the His bundle. Ablation of anteroseptal pathway locations remains a challenge to the electrophysiologist due to a very high risk of transiet or permanent atrioventricular (AV) block.
CASE REPORT: A male, 18-year-old, patient was hospitalized due to radiofrequency (RF) ablation of APs. He was an active football player with frequent palpitations during efforts accompanied by dyspnea and lightheadedness, but without syncope. Electroc

Links between electroencephalograms (EEGs) and underlying aspects of neurophysiology and anatomy are poorly understood. Here a nonlinear continuum model of large-scale brain electrical activity is used to analyze arousal states and their stability and nonlinear dynamics for physiologically realistic parameters. A simple ordered arousal sequence in a reduced parameter space is inferred and found to be consistent with experimentally determined parameters of waking states. Instabilities arise at spectral peaks of the major clinically observed EEG rhythms-mainly slow wave, delta, theta, alpha, and

Electroencephalogram sleep measures over a 4-week period were obtained on 35 inpatients with major depression (unipolar) who received either fluvoxamine or desipramine in a randomized double-blind trial. Fluvoxamine showed immediate rapid eye movement (REM) sleep suppression and an alerting effect on sleep continuity measures. In contrast, desipramine administration was associated with REM suppression and sleep continuity improvement. The "alerting" quality of fluvoxamine, similar to other serotonergic antidepressants, appears to be unrelated to a lack of clinical efficacy, but may be related

This review discusses a variety of causes of stupor and coma and associated electroencephalographic (EEG) findings. These include metabolic disturbances such as hepatic or renal dysfunction, which are often characterized by slowing of background rhythms and triphasic waves. Hypoxia and drug intoxications can produce a number of abnormal EEG patterns such as burst suppression, alpha coma, and spindle coma. Structural lesions, either supra- or infratentorial, are reviewed. EEGs in the former may show focal disturbances such as delta and theta activity, epileptiform abnormalities, and attenuation

The aim of the present study was to investigate the electrophysiological effects of the photobiomodulation (PBM) by the quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) as a diagnostic method. The neurotherapeutic potential of transcranial PBM has been recently investigated in preclinical and clinical studies. According to the PBM mechanisms of action on increasing the cerebral blood flow and the neuronal firing, a change may occur in cortical electrical activity after transcranial PBM that could be revealed in qEEG. A total of 30 participants (15 males and 15 females) were included in this experime

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a perfectly well defined clinical picture, but nevertheless even today its aetiology remains unknown. The three most widely accepted theories suggest it has a vascular origin, it is related with the pathophysiology of migraine or it is of an epileptiform nature.
AIM: To analyse whether there is an electroencephalographic pattern that is consistently repeated in a series of electro-encephalograms (EEG) carried out on patients with TGA.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study consists in a retrospective analysis of a sample of 345 patients referred to ha

Moyamoya disease is an idiopathic cerebral vasculopathy, which may be progressive or non-progressive. Non-idiopathic forms with an associated disease are called moyamoya-like syndrome. The electroencephalographic finding characteristically seen after hyperventilation in about 50% of children with cerebrovascular disease includes gradual frequency decrease and activation of amplitude of slow waves which appear after the disappearance or attenuation of ordinary build up. This is termed the "re-build up" phenomenon, which is rarely seen and therefore may be under-recognized. We present video tele

BACKGROUND: Right-sided accessory pathways can cause ventricular dyssynchrony through early right ventricular preexcitation, mimicking left bundle branch block and leading to reversible cardiomyopathy even without sustained tachycardia. Although catheter ablation is standard, pharmacologic reversal in adults has not been reported.
DATA SOURCES: Single-patient case from a US community hospital. Literature review (PubMed/Embase) confirmed no previous adult cases of complete pharmacologic reversal.
