Tumoral calcinosis: report of a case and brief review of the literature.

A patient with a 32-year history of tumoral calcinosis is described. The calcified lesions involved the soft tissues in the hips, shoulders, and ankles. Periodically, a chalky semifluid material extruded through several cutaneous sinuses. Laboratory tests including serum calcium concentration were normal, except for slight elevation of serum phosphorous levels. Ophthalmologic examination revealed the interesting finding of subretinal angioid streaks. The dental radiograms disclosed pathognomonic short bulbous roots and partial obliteration of pulp cavities, while the radiological evaluation of

Pulpal cellular reactions to experimental tooth movement in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to study the early cellular reactions of the dental pulp during experimental tooth movement. STUDY DESIGN: A total number of 98 male rats were used. Tooth movement was induced for 1 to 168 hours by inserting elastic bands between maxillary first and second molars of animals, which were labeled with tritiated thymidine. Pathologic signs, macrophage content, and proliferation of fibroblasts and endothelial cells were assessed histologically on autoradiographs of second molar pulps. Data were analyzed using ANOVA with Tukey's test as post hoc pairwise comparison. RE

The anti-inflammatory effects of human recombinant copper-zinc superoxide dismutase on pulp inflammation.

Inflammation in the dental pulp is accompanied by release of a wide variety of highly oxidative molecules known as reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS concentrations are controlled in vivo by an antioxidant enzyme scavenger system that may be overwhelmed by the increases in ROS production seen during inflammation. Supplementation of the antioxidant defense system, therefore, may limit the severity of the inflammatory response to injury due to this component. To test this hypothesis, this study examined the effects of superoxide radical scavenging on pulpal inflammation induced in rat molars by

Late Clinical Manifestations and Documented Management of Infant Oral Mutilation.

BACKGROUND: Infant oral mutilation (IOM) is a traditional practice involving manipulation or removal of unerupted primary tooth buds during infancy. Although its developmental effects on the permanent dentition are well documented, the clinical presentation and management of affected teeth later in life remain insufficiently characterized. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical and radiographic findings and documented management of IOM-affected teeth in a clinically identified cohort of young adults. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with documented IOM ident

Unusual horizontal and vertical root fractures of maxillary molars: an 11-year follow-up.

Intra-alveolar root fractures of posterior teeth are rare when compared with other dental injuries. This case report describes one vertical and two horizontal root fractures of teeth 3, 14, and 15. The teeth all tested normal to cold and electric pulp tests. The patient reported no history of accidental trauma, and no signs of scarring were found. These fractures were discovered during a routine full-mouth radiographic survey. All teeth were asymptomatic and in good function. During the 11 yr that followed, there was no dental treatment, except for routine periodontal maintenance. The patient

Descriptive Evaluation of Medium- and Long-Term Complications of Traumatic Dental Injuries in Children and Adolescents Reporting to a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) frequently present with acute symptoms, yet many adverse outcomes manifest months or years later as medium- and long-term consequences. These sequelae, such as pulp necrosis with infection of root canal system, periapical radiolucency, and external inflammatory resorption, pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Evidence describing such healing complications as the first presenting complaint remains limited. The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of such complications in children and adolescents reporting to a tertiar

In vitro effect of Er: YAG laser irradiation in caries cavity preparation on biobehaviors of adjacent human dental pulp cells in the pulp chamber.

The erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er: YAG) laser has been successfully applied in caries removal; however, little is known about proper parameters of Er: YAG laser on different conditions of caries removal, especially the influence of Er: YAG irradiation on human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). Here, we tested the effects of Er: YAG laser at different output energy levels (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mJ) on biobehaviors of hDPCs. To simulate clinical deep caries conditions, hDPCs were cultured on the pulpal side of 500-μm-thick dentin disks in an in vitro pulp chamber model. Temperature cha
