Application of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in dentistry.

TENS is extremely useful in some dental procedures, such as TMJ syndrome and tooth extraction; however, its use is not practical in all situations. The dentist must remember that TENS is an adjunctive form of treatment. It is not a panacea for all types of pain, nor should it be used as a last resort. When applied correctly and with care, TENS is useful in the management of pain in the head and face.

Veterans Administration cooperative study on hepatitis and dentistry.

Personnel in the VA dental facilities were screened for the detection of viral hepatitis and identification of factors implicating infectivity. A total of 963 personnel from 126 dental facilities throughout the United States voluntarily participated in the study. The rate of seroconversion for any hepatitis B markers was approximately 1% per year. Serial positive tests for antibody to hepatitis B core antigen or antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (or both) were present in 16.2% of dentists and 13.0% of dental auxiliary personnel. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons composed the highest preval

A comparison of midazolam and diazepam for intravenous sedation in dentistry.

In a randomised cross-over trial, midazolam, a new water soluble benzodiazepine was compared with the conventional diazepam preparation (Valium) in 34 patients aged 16-45 years who were undergoing outpatient conservation dentistry. Midazolam hydrochloride (0.17 mg/kg) was virtually free of venous complications and showed advantages over diazepam (0.32 mg/kg) in providing a faster onset of action, higher incidence of amnesia and more rapid recovery. Midazolam produced a higher incidence of respiratory side effects hiccough (17.6% compared with 2.9%), brief apnoea following induction (11.8% comp…

Hepatitis. A review of the disease and its significance to dentistry.

The report is a review of the literature related to hepatitis B and its implications for dental practitioners. Hepatitis B represents a serious health risk among dentists and simple preventive measures can greatly reduce the risk of transmission or contraction of the disease. Certain positive findings in a healthy history should alert the dentist that he may be treating a carrier of hepatitis B. If so, the wearing of gloves, a mask and protective eyewear will almost totally protect one from contracting the disease. To guard against transmission of hepatitis B to other patients in the dental pr

Selected pain states and the use of anesthesia in dentistry.

Certain pain disorders may be difficult to diagnose because their presenting symptoms are confusing and difficult to classify, or because they occur so infrequently that they are not commonly considered. This article has presented a classification and discussion of selected pain states which the practitioner may find difficult to diagnose. When faced with a perplexing pain problem, the dentist is encouraged to perform a careful evaluation to determine whether the patient's pain is or is not of dental origin. Certain pain states require that the patient be referred for evaluation to other denta

Personalized dentistry: Enhancing outcomes through patient-centered innovation.

Current dental practice relies on generalized treatment protocols that inadequately address individual genetic, biological and environmental variation, limiting precision in the prevention and management of oral and craniofacial diseases. Intricate interactions among these factors drive disease development, highlighting the need for more individualized approaches. Dentistry is moving toward personalized care through advances in digital technologies, salivary diagnostics and genomics. Therefore, it is of interest to describe the development and reach of personalized dentistry, with a focus on c…

Esthetics in Pediatric Dentistry-BioFlx Crowns: Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The crown is considered the most effective restoration for the management of dental caries. It reproduces the morphology and contour of the damaged coronal portion of the tooth while maintaining its function. The esthetic needs of children and the demands of parents bring advancement in dentistry toward a new era of esthetic crowns. In this era of esthetic crowns, the newly introduced preformed BioFlx crown seems to be an effective esthetic treatment option. CASE DESCRIPTION: In the present case series, full coverage restoration for the management of carious and pulp therapy-treat…

Green dentistry: Organic toothpaste formulations. A literature review.

Dentistry as a profession should take into account the goals of sustainable development in daily practice and encourage the transition to a green economy. Consumers are becoming more conscious about the impact of self-care products, including toothpastes, on the environment. Organic toothpastes are considered very safe. A broad literature review was conducted to: (i) identify the ingredients in available organic toothpastes; (ii) classify them into active and inactive; and (iii) evaluate each ingredient's purpose and the adverse events that may be associated with its use. A comprehensive list …

Carpal tunnel syndrome - an occupational hazard facing dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The authors wished to evaluate the comprehensive literature on carpal tunnel syndrome to discover work specific to carpal tunnel syndrome among dentists in order to determine whether there is any correlation with dentists having a higher prevalence of its occurrence. METHODS: A review of dental literature involving carpal tunnel syndrome was undertaken. Details appearing in the literature before 1995 was reviewed in a comprehensive manner and the literature after 1995 were reviewed electronically. RESULTS: The prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome is higher in dental professionals

Tooth agenesis: from molecular genetics to molecular dentistry.

Tooth agenesis may originate from either genetic or environmental factors. Genetically determined hypodontic disorders appear as isolated features or as part of a syndrome. Msx1, Pax9, and Axin2 are involved in non-syndromic hypodontia, while genes such as Shh, Pitx2, Irf6, and p63 are considered to participate in syndromic genetic disorders, which include tooth agenesis. In dentistry, artificial tooth implants represent a common solution to tooth loss problems; however, molecular dentistry offers promising solutions for the future. In this paper, the genetic and molecular bases of non-syndrom…
