BACKGROUND: Correction of orthodontic asymmetries is crucial to achieve functional occlusion, aesthetics and stability of post orthodontic treatment results. To date valid frequency data of dentofacial asymmetries in Pakistani orthodontic patients do not exist to document orthodontic treatment need. The objectives of this study were to determine frequency of dento-facial asymmetries, severity of dental asymmetries and to determine difference in frequency of dentofacial asymmetries in mixed and permanent dentition.
METHODS: The sample of this cross-sectional study comprised of 280 patients (17

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary teeth are frequently affected by traumatic dental injuries. Root fractures are rare and have a reported incidence of 2% in the primary dentition. Hence, there is limited evidence on this topic. This study aims to evaluate the risk of healing complications in primary teeth with root fracture and to identify possible sequelae in the permanent dentition following root fracture in the primary dentition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 53 patients with 74 root fractured primary teeth. The standard follow-up program included clinical and radiog

OBJECTIVES: To depict restorative treatment recommendations of US dentists for posterior proximal enamel caries lesions detected with bitewing radiographs in permanent teeth.
METHODS: The Fact Box format was utilized to depict the probabilities of restorative treatment recommendations made by US dentists for posterior proximal enamel caries lesions detected with bitewing radiographs in permanent teeth. Four case scenarios were considered, including patients at low caries risk versus those at high caries risk for two proportions (10% versus 38%) of proximal enamel caries lesions with external

AIM: Several treatment modalities have been used to restore crown fractures in case of uncomplicated crown fractures. Although many treatment modalities have been reported, there is no consensus on which one has the best results in terms of success and durability. This systematic review of treatment modalities in uncomplicated crown fractures aims to provide the most common and successful treatment modality for each patient's unique needs, balancing conservation, aesthetics, and long-term durability.

AIM: This case report aims to describe the importance of early diagnosis, various clinical features, and management of radicular cyst with primary mandibular molar.
BACKGROUND: Radicular cyst is an odontogenic inflammatory cyst in origin seen more frequently in permanent dentition and rarely in the primary dentition. It can develop due to pulp injuries or pulp necrosis caused by deep dental caries or dental trauma. It may adversely affect the normal development and eruption of the permanent succedaneous teeth.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of radicular cyst in association with the prima

INTRODUCTION: Caries experience in primary teeth has been highlighted as the most important single risk factor for caries development in the subsequent permanent teeth, but at cavitated stages. This 10-year cohort study aimed to evaluate whether children with only initial caries lesions in the primary teeth could also have a higher risk for caries incidence in permanent teeth.
METHODS: We evaluated Brazilian preschoolers aged 1-5 years in 2010 (T1) and re-evaluated them 2 (T2), 7 (T3), and 10 (T4) years later. Dental caries in primary and permanent teeth was assessed through the International

Dental fusion is a rare developmental anomaly, which is included in the anomalies of tooth morphology or shape. Fusion can occur at the level of enamel or enamel and dentin, which results in the formation of a single tooth with enlarged clinical crown. Fusion is more common in deciduous dentition. Incisors are reported to be fused in primary and permanent dentition, but bilateral fusion is a rare occurrence. The prevalence of bilateral fusion in the permanent dentition is less frequent than unilateral fusion and is reported to be around 0.05%. The authors report a case of a 20-year-old male wi

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by the association of palmoplantar keratoderma with severe periodontopathy resulting in premature loss of both deciduous and permanent dentition. We treated a patient with PLS with etretinate and followed him for 10 years. Treatment was started at age 9 years, soon after the eruption of secondary dentition. Healing of cutaneous and periodontal lesions was obtained in a few months and maintained during the four years of treatment. Six years after etretinate withdrawal the teeth are still free of periodont

INTRODUCTION: Ferdinand Graf von Spee is credited with characterizing human occlusal curvature viewed in the sagittal plane. This naturally occurring phenomenon has clinical importance in orthodontics and restorative dentistry, yet we have little understanding of when, how, or why it develops. The purpose of this study was to expand our understanding by examining the development of the curve of Spee longitudinally in a sample of untreated subjects with normal occlusion from the deciduous dentition to adulthood.
METHODS: Records of 16 male and 17 female subjects from the Iowa Facial Growth Stu

UNLABELLED: Ectopic eruption of the first permanent molar is a relatively common occurence in the developing dentition. A range of treatment options are available to the clinician provided that diagnosis is made early. Non-treatment can result in premature exfoliation of the second primary molar, space loss and impaction of the second premolar. This paper will describe the management of ectopic first permanent molars, using clinical examples to illustrate the available treatment options.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This paper is relevant to every general dental practitioner who treats patients in mix

Resorption of primary teeth is a normal physiologic process, except when it occurs prematurely. Resorption of permanent teeth is considered abnormal, and multiple etiologic factors have been implicated. A significant number of cases are represented by idiopathic resorption. Multiple idiopathic root resorption stands as a separate physiologic entity that has been described as affecting the entire permanent dentition. Multiple idiopathic resorption of primary teeth has not been previously reported. A case is described and a differential diagnosis is provided. The specific radiographic diagnostic

Odontodysplasia is a relatively uncommon condition that can affect both primary and permanent dentition. It is characterized by defective formation of both enamel and dentin, with enlarged pulp chambers and root canals with open apices. It is usually a localised condition where one or few teeth may be involved. Sometimes, an entire quadrant or more than one quadrant may be involved but generalized involvement is extremely rare. An interesting case of a generalized odontodysplasia affecting both primary and permanent dentition in an eight year old girl is presented here.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the world's most prevalent disease. Untreated caries can cause pain and negatively impact psychosocial health, functioning, and nutrition. It is important to identify cost-effective, easy-to-use agents, which can prevent or arrest caries. This review evaluates silver diamine fluoride (SDF).
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of silver diamine fluoride for preventing and managing caries in primary and permanent teeth (coronal and root caries) compared to any other intervention including placebo or no treatment.

Supernumerary teeth occur frequently in the permanent dentition, but they are rare in the primary dentition. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth with a cone shaped crown and a short root. The supernumerary tooth which bears resemblance to the tooth with which it is associated is called a supplemental tooth. The etiology of supernumerary teeth is still unknown and not well understood. Radiographic examination of pre-school children is essential for their diagnosis. Early removal of these teeth is required so that complications such as delay in eruption of permanent teeth, crowding, diastema, rot

The miniature pig is a useful large laboratory animal model. Various tissues and organs of miniature pigs are similar to those of humans in terms of developmental, anatomical, immunological, and physiological characteristics. The oral and maxillofacial region of miniature pigs is often used in preclinical studies of regenerative dentistry. However, there is limited information on the dentition and tooth structure of miniature pigs. The purpose of this study was to examine the time-course changes of dentition and tooth structure (especially the root) of the miniature pig mandibular cheek teeth
