Exclusive breastfeeding and postpartum depression: A protective association that is not modified by feeding intentions.

Approximately 13% of women in the United States (U.S.) experience postpartum depression (PPD), a mood disorder that negatively affects maternal and infant wellbeing. Breastfeeding may protect against PPD and breastfeeding intentions may moderate this relationship. This study examined the association between breastfeeding status and PPD symptoms and whether exclusive breastfeeding intentions moderate this relationship in low-income women in the U.S. We utilized data from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Infant and Toddler Feeding Practices Study-

The role of partner support in the association between water birth and postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression is a significant public health problem affecting both mothers and infants and is associated with obstetric, psychological, and social factors. Although water birth is considered to facilitate labor and improve maternal comfort, its relationship with postpartum depression remains unclear. This prospective observational cohort study compared depressive symptom scores between women who underwent water birth and those who had conventional vaginal birth on land while evaluating the role of partner support. A total of 87 women were followed from the third trimester of pregnancy

Patient-reported perceptions of brexanolone in the treatment of postpartum depression: A qualitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Brexanolone demonstrates short-term efficacy for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD). Postpartum depression is linked to infanticide and maternal suicide, and current treatment often fails to adequately control depressive symptoms. The purpose of this analysis is to further understand the experience(s) of women who have received brexanolone for the treatment of PPD. METHODS: Semistructured interviews modeled after the theory of planned behavior (TPB) were conducted to assess women's perceptions of treatment for PPD with brexanolone. Women who received treatment with bre

Barbiturates and pyrazolopyridines for the treatment of postpartum depression-repurposing of two drug classes.

Zulresso (brexanolone) is an aqueous formulation of the neurosteroid, allopregnanolone, and the only FDA-approved medication for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD). While brexanolone is effective for the treatment of PPD, lengthy infusion time and high cost can be prohibitive. Failure of GABAA receptors to adapt to fluctuating neurosteroid levels is considered to predispose women to mood disorders in the postpartum period. Brexanolone is thought to act via stimulation of δ subunit-containing GABAA receptors, which are extrasynaptic and localized to particular brain regions. Neuroster

Association between antenatal screening for depressive symptoms and postpartum psychiatric admissions.

Antenatal depression is the strongest predictor for postpartum depression including psychiatric admission. Universal screening for depressive symptoms during pregnancy may increase the detection of clinical depression and reduce consequent morbidity. We therefore hypothesised that antenatal screening for depressive symptoms could reduce the risk of postpartum psychiatric admissions. We explored the association between antenatal depression screening and postpartum psychiatric admissions using cross-sectional retrospective analysis of state-wide population-based health services administrative da

Do Successive Preterm Births Increase the Risk of Postpartum Depressive Symptoms?

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression and preterm birth (PTB) are major problems affecting women's health. PTB has been associated with increased risk of postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS). However, it is unclear if PTB in women with a prior history of PTB is associated with an incremental risk of PDS. This study aims to determine if PTB in women with a prior history of PTB is associated with an incremental risk of PDS. METHODS: Data come from the 2009-2011 national Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Study sample included 55,681 multiparous women with singleton live births in the inde

Risk of Depressive Symptoms Associated with Morbidity in Postpartum Women in Rural Bangladesh.

UNLABELLED: Objectives Depression following pregnancy is common, but its extent and association with maternal morbidity in the first 6 months postpartum have not been well described in low resource settings such as rural Bangladesh. Methods We used data from a population-based, community trial of approximately 39,000 married rural Bangladeshi women aged 13-44 between 2001 and 2007 to examine the relation between women's reported morbidity symptoms from childbirth to 3 months postpartum, and subsequent depressive symptoms assessed at 6 months postpartum. We calculated crude and adjusted risk ra

Postpartum depression is a family affair: addressing the impact on mothers, fathers, and children.

The purpose of this paper is to present research on the effects of postpartum depression (PPD) on mothers, fathers, and children that point to a re-conceptualization of PPD as a mental health condition that affects the whole family. As such, the objectives of this paper are to discuss: (1) the incidence and effects of PPD on mothers and fathers; (2) common predictors of PPD in mothers and fathers, and (3) the effects of PPD on parenting and parent-child relationships, and (4) the effects of PPD on children's health, and their cognitive and social-emotional development. Finally, the implication

Depression and anxiety through pregnancy and the early postpartum: an examination of prospective relationships.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore the prospective relationship between depressive symptoms and anxiety across pregnancy and the early postpartum. METHODS: Participants (N=207) completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Trait subscale, Beck Depression Inventory, and social support and sleep quality measures at two time points during pregnancy and once in the early postpartum period. RESULTS: After accounting for the relative stability of anxiety and depression over time, depressive symptoms earlier in pregnancy predicted higher levels of anxiety in late pregnancy and anxiety i

The tyramine test is not a marker for postnatal depression: early postpartum euphoria may be.

Abnormally low tyramine test values are known to be markers for vulnerability to unipolar, but not bipolar, endogenous depression. In the present study, 37 women with recent postnatal depression (25 major, 12 minor) and 22 puerperal controls with no depressive disorder, all assessed by Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia (SADS-L) interview, together with 17 other controls, underwent the test. No significant differences in tyramine sulfate output were demonstrated between the different groups. Those subjects with endogenous features according to Newcastle score (n = 7) or Research

Gender roles, social support, and postpartum depressive symptomatology. The benefits of caring.

Although women are assumed to be particularly vulnerable to depressive symptomatology after childbirth, the extent to which this symptomatology predominates over that found in men at this life cycle stage has not been addressed. This study examined gender differences in postpartum depressive symptomatology and the link between postpartum symptomatology and gender roles and relationships in a sample obtained from childbirth preparation classes. The data show no gender difference in depressive symptomatology at 2 months after childbirth. Women manifested a decrease in depressive symptomatology a

A Tailored Postpartum eHealth Physical Activity Intervention for Individuals at High Risk of Postpartum Depression-the POstpartum Wellness Study (POW): Protocol and Data Overview for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with significant health consequences for the parent and child. Current recommendations for PPD prevention require intense health care system resources. Evidence-based interventions for PPD prevention that do not further burden the health care system are needed. Evidence suggests that physical activity (PA) can generally reduce depressive symptoms. Technology-based interventions may help decrease common barriers to PA. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to report the protocol and provide a data overview of the POstpartum Wellness study (POW)-an eff

From Delivery to Depression: Exploring the Role of Perceived Partner Support in the Link Between Obstetric Violence and Postpartum Depression.

Obstetric violence is linked to postpartum depression, yet the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain underexplored. This study examined perceived partner support as a mediating mechanism among 535 women who had given birth within the past 18 months. Results indicated that obstetric violence was associated with higher postpartum depression and lower perceived partner support. Perceived partner support was negatively related to depression. Mediation analyses showed that perceived partner support partially mediated the association between obstetric abuse and violence and postpartum depre
