The bad old days are still here: abortion mortality in developing countries.

Each year, complications related to unsafe abortion account for at least one in seven maternal deaths worldwide. Nearly all of these deaths occur in developing countries and most are preventable. The authors argue that to prevent abortion-related deaths, all women must have access to safe abortion and contraceptive services, and they discuss the strategies used to prevent abortion-related deaths--preventing unwanted pregnancy, preventing abortion, preventing unsafe abortion, and treating abortion complications. Some of these strategies have been effective, while others have failed. Preventing …

Routine radio-imaging in filarial chyluria--is it necessary in developing countries?

Chyluria is a common presentation of filariasis in developing countries and mostly affects economically poor classes. The judicious use of investigations is mandatory to keep the cost of treatment acceptable. A modified plan is suggested for managing such patients without using retrograde pyelography or lymphangiography. A total of 54 patients were studied at 2 separate institutions, with retrograde pyelography being carried out at one institution but not at the other. All patients were treated primarily by the instillation of 1% silver nitrate, with an initial success rate of 70%. Eight patie…

Vitamin A Prophylaxis Programs in Developing Countries: Past Experiences and Future Prospects.

Clinical eye signs are estimated to affect 5-10 million children annually in the developing world. Thus most experience with large-scale prophylaxis programs has been with periodic distribution of high-dose vitamin A supplements directed toward preventing ocular problems. However, subclinical vitamin A depletion affects an estimated five- to 10-fold larger population, and evidence is accumulating for a subclinical protective role of vitamin A against risk of mortality, and perhaps morbidity. Current programs aim to integrate prophylaxis with vitamin A supplements into ongoing programs. Decentr

Ultrasonography and scintigraphy in liver disease in developing countries. A retrospective survey.

In a study of the value of hepatic ultrasonography (US) and scintigraphy (SG) in detecting liver disease in developing countries 425 US scans and 304 SG scans of patients with focal or diffuse liver disease or normal livers were reviewed. The accuracy of both US and SG in distinguishing between normal and diseased livers was low (68% and 74%, respectively). Both techniques did better at detecting focal than diffuse liver disease; the sensitivity of US and SG in focal and diffuse disease was 88% and 92%, and 27% and 54%, respectively. The specificity of both procedures was high for both types o…

Transmission of viral infections by the water route: implications for developing countries.

The "enteric" virus group comprises greater than 100 different viruses. These viruses typically infect the cell lining of the alimentary canal and are discharged in very large numbers in the feces of infected persons. Contamination of water supplies by enteric viruses represents an important source of viral infection. Many communities, particularly in developing countries, depend on sewage-polluted sources for their recreational and drinking water. Because conventional methods of sewage and water treatment have proved inefficient in the removal and inactivation of most enteric viruses, great c…

Microbiologic techniques for the diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease in developing countries.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a major medical problem that causes serious complications in a large number of the female population in many developing countries. It is estimated that between 20% and 30% of gynecologic admissions in these countries are due to PID. The alarmingly high prevalence of gonorrhea is probably a major cause of this syndrome. Diagnosis of PID on clinical grounds without laboratory verification is the rule. The various techniques for diagnosing PID are discussed briefly. Primarily because of very small health budgets, the limitations faced by developing nations in the ac…

The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Knowledge Hub: developing an open platform for facilitating high-quality clinical research.

There is stark global inequity in health research in terms of where studies happen, who leads the research and the ultimate beneficiaries of the results generated. Despite significant efforts made, limited research ideas are conceptualised and implemented in low-resource settings to tackle diseases of poverty, and this is especially true in sub-Saharan Africa. There is strong evidence to show that the barriers to locally led research do not vary largely between disease, study type and location and can be largely solved by addressing these common gaps. The European & Developing Countries Clinic…

How does green finance accelerate the shift to energy revolution in developing countries?

This study aims to analyze the effects of green finance on the energy transition in 63 developing countries over the period 2000-2022. We address this assessment by using fixed effects (OLS and Driscoll-Kraay), followed by Lewbel (2012) and Kiviet (2020) instrumentation strategies to manage endogeneity. We found evidence that green finance enhances energy transition in developing countries, and that this effect is mediated by green technologies, human capital, and ecosystem conservation. Additional results reveal that economies with higher levels of government efficiency, political stability, …

Plant-Made Vaccines Targeting Enteric Pathogens-Safe Alternatives for Vaccination in Developing Countries.

Enteric diseases by pathogenic organisms are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, particularly in low-income countries. Despite antibiotics, access to clean water and vaccination are the most economically affordable options to prevent those infections and their health consequences. Vaccines, such as those approved for rotavirus and cholera, have played a key role in preventing several enteric diseases. However, vaccines for other pathogens are still in clinical trials. Distribution and cost remain significant barriers to vaccine access in developing regions due to poor healthcare infr

Does protectionism improve environment of developing countries? A perspective of environmental efficiency assessment.

Past studies related to embodied pollutant accounting reported that free trade has increased the environmental pollution of developing economies, because the developed countries "outsource" their pollutants to developing nations. The COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated the rise of the most serious protectionism after World War II. This study is aimed to discuss whether protectionism improve the environment in developing countries by developing a comprehensive evaluation model, which integrates multi-regional input-output (MRIO), data envelopment analysis (DEA), and scenario analysis. We revealed …

Amitraz: A Perpetual Silent Menace Among Children in Developing Countries-A Case Report.

Amitraz is an acaricide and insecticide used to treat ticks, which infest domestic animals in developing countries. Because of its widespread use, it is one of the common poisons unintentionally consumed by infants and children when left unsupervised. A 3-year-old boy was brought with unintentional consumption of Amitraz. On examination, he was found to be progressively drowsy, with an irregular pulse, bradycardia, and hypotension. He was treated with atropine, intravenous fluids, and dopamine infusion; hemodynamic stability was achieved within 36 hours after ingestion. Amitraz is an unusual b…

Management of Diarrhoeal Dehydration in Childhood: A Review for Clinicians in Developing Countries.

The survival of a child with severe volume depletion at the emergency department depends on the competency of the first responder to recognize and promptly treat hypovolemic shock. Although the basic principles on fluid and electrolytes therapy have been investigated for decades, the topic remains a challenge, as consensus on clinical management protocol is difficult to reach, and more adverse events are reported from fluid administration than for any other drug. While the old principles proposed by Holliday and Segar, and Finberg have stood the test of time, recent systematic reviews and meta
