BACKGROUND: Redox-active iron can promote oxidative stress and tissue injury by catalyzing hydroxyl radical generation and lipid peroxidation. Intravenous iron preparations are routinely administered in conjunction with erythropoietin to treat anemia in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), a condition that is marked by oxidative stress and inflammation. This treatment frequently elevates iron burden, which can potentially intensify oxidative stress and, thus, cardiovascular disease in this population.

Thirty dehydrated diarrheic calves aged 2-45 days were used to study the effects of small volume intravenous 7.2% hypertonic saline and 6% dextran 70 solution in combination with alkalinising oral fluids and to compare this therapy with the large volume intravenous isotonic saline with alkalinising oral fluid treatment. This study included a total of 30 diarrhoeic dehydrated calves aged 2-45 days. After routine clinical and haematological examinations, the calves were allotted to two treatment groups. Hydroxyethyl starch 120 (HES 120/0.7, Plasmafusin) is the smallest medium molecular weight HES preparation used as a plasma substitute for all clinical purposes. A Jehovah's Witness presented with colon cancer and profound anemia. On admission, her hemoglobin level was 30 g/L (3.0 g/dL). She refused all transfusions and failed to respond to oral iron therapy. She was ultimately prepared for surgery using recombinant human erythropoietin, iron dextran, and total parenteral nutrition. The effect of intravenously infused iron-dextran (Imferon) on the progression of antigen induced monarticular arthritis in rabbits was studied. The elimination of erythrocytes by dextran sedimentation is a useful method to prevent haemolytic complications after AB0-incompatible bone marrow transplantation. The procedure presented here lasts only 1.5-2 hours, is high reproducible and safe in respect of infections. The mean recovery of nucleated cells amounted to 94%. The contamination with erythrocytes is low (recovery 1.1%). We have never seen haemolytic reactions during 7 AB0-incompatible bone marrow transplantations.
