"Cigarettes play the equalizer": discrimination experiences and readiness to quit cigarette smoking among African Americans experiencing homelessness: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 70-80% of people experiencing homelessness in the United States use tobacco. Smoking cessation programs specifically for this population have been found to be less effective for African American participants. The purpose of this study was to explore discrimination experiences and their impact on smoking habits and readiness to quit cigarette smoking while experiencing homelessness. METHODS: In the qualitative phase of this mixed methods study, five focus groups were conducted for African Americans residing in a homeless shelter in Skid Row, Los Angeles, CA. Using a s

Isolation, discrimination, and feeling "constant guilt": A mixed-methods analysis of female physicians' experience with fertility, family planning, and oncology careers.

INTRODUCTION: Family planning among female physicians is harmed by high risks of infertility, workload burden, poor family leave policies, and gender discrimination. Many women report feeling unsupported in the workplace, despite national policies to protect against unfair treatment. METHODS: This secondary analysis applied a modified version of the rigorous and accelerated data reduction technique to conduct a thematic analysis of comments to an open-ended prompt. Comments were coded by multiple trained researchers then grouped and merged into illustrative themes via qualitative techniques.

The diagnostic performance of AI-based algorithms to discriminate between NMOSD and MS using MRI features: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] findings in Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder [NMOSD] and Multiple Sclerosis [MS] patients could lead us to discriminate toward them. For instance, U-fiber and Dawson's finger-type lesions are suggestive of MS, however linear ependymal lesions raise the possibility of NMOSD. Recently, artificial intelligence [AI] models have been used to discriminate between NMOSD and MS based on MRI features. In this study, we aim to systematically review the capability of AI algorithms in NMOSD and MS discrimination based on MRI features. METHOD: We searched

Label-free detection and discrimination of respiratory pathogens based on electrochemical synthesis of biomaterials-mediated plasmonic composites and machine learning analysis.

Seasonal outbreaks of respiratory viral infections remain a global concern, with increasing morbidity and mortality rates recorded annually. Timely and false responses contribute to the widespread of respiratory pathogenic diseases owing to similar symptoms at an early stage and subclinical infection. The prevention of emerging novel viruses and variants is also a big challenge. Reliable point-of-care diagnostic assays for early infection diagnosis play a critical role in the response to threats of epidemics or pandemics. We developed a facile method for specifically identifying different viru

Data Independent Acquisition Proteomic Analysis Can Discriminate between Actinic Keratosis, Bowen's Disease, and Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) are heterogeneous keratinocytic skin lesions. Biomarkers that can accurately stratify these lesion types are needed to support a new paradigm of personalized and precise management of skin neoplasia. In this paper, we used a data independent acquisition proteomics workflow, sequential window acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra, to analyze formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of normal skin and keratinocytic skin lesions, including well-differentiated, moderately differentiated and poorly differentiated

Phylogenetic analysis of Ara+ and Ara- Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates and development of a multiplex PCR procedure for rapid discrimination between the two biotypes.

A Burkholderia pseudomallei-like organism has recently been identified among some soil isolates of B. pseudomallei in an area with endemic melioidosis. This organism is almost identical to B. pseudomallei in terms of morphological and biochemical profiles, except that it differs in ability to assimilate L-arabinose. These Ara+ isolates are also less virulent than the Ara- isolates in animal models. In addition, clinical isolates of B. pseudomallei available to date are almost exclusively Ara-. These features suggested that these two organisms may belong to distinctive species. In this study, t

Pharmacologic discrimination between receptor heterogeneity and allosteric interaction: resultant analysis of gallamine and pirenzepine antagonism of muscarinic responses in rat trachea.

The antagonism of muscarinic receptor-mediated contraction of rat trachea by a range of muscarinic antagonists was quantified by Schild and resultant analysis. Dose-response curves to carbachol, muscarine and oxotremorine were shifted to the right by gallamine and pirenzepine in a parallel manner with no change in maximal response ostensibly indicating simple competitive inhibition. However, Schild analysis indicated differences in the blockade and estimated pKb values with each agonist for both gallamine and pirenzepine. This suggested either that the responses to these three agonists were me

Comparative assessment of model for end-stage liver disease, modified model for end-stage liver disease including sodium, and Maddrey's discriminant function in alcoholic hepatitis mortality: a systematic review and diagnostic meta-analysis.

Alcoholic hepatitis is a form of acute liver injury with significant morbidity and mortality. Several scoring systems have been developed and used to predict mortality, including Maddrey's discriminant function (MDF), model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), and modified MELD including sodium (MELD-Na). We conducted a systematic review of Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library to compare the accuracy of these scores in alcoholic hepatitis mortality prediction. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of MDF for mortality prediction in 28 days were 0.898 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.777-0.957,

Multidimensional discrimination of Niulanshan light-flavor baijiu across price categories via integrated volatilome profiling, sensory analysis, and neurophysiological responses.

Niulanshan light-flavor Baijiu (NLFB) exhibits pronounced price stratification. However, objective criteria for quality grading remain insufficient. This study established a multidimensional framework integrating flavor chemistry and consumer neuroscience to elucidate the molecular and neurophysiological basis of Baijiu quality differentiation. Six NLFB samples spanning three price tiers were evaluated using descriptive sensory analysis, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC × GC-MS), targeted quantitative analysis, and electroencephalography (EEG). Integrated transcriptomic and single cell analysis combined with artificial neural network identifies a robust gene signature for early discrimination of MASL and MASH.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease, ranging from simple steatosis (MASL) to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). However, reliable noninvasive strategies for accurately distinguishing MASL from MASH at an early stage remain limited. We therefore aimed to develop a robust molecular model to improve early identification of disease progression and subtype discrimination. METHODS: Five datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus were integrated as a training cohort comprising 149 MASL and 158 M

Monocyte Anisocytosis Can Discriminate Between Sepsis and Sterile Inflammation, but not Mortality, in Critically Ill Surgical/Trauma Patients: A Secondary Prospective Analysis.

OBJECTIVES BACKGROUND: Monocyte anisocytosis (monocyte distribution width [MDW]) has been previously validated to predict sepsis and outcome in patients presenting in the emergency department and mixed-population ICUs. Determining sepsis in a critically ill surgical/trauma population is often difficult due to concomitant inflammation and stress. We examined whether MDW could identify sepsis among patients admitted to a surgical/trauma ICU and predict clinical outcome. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of three prospective observational clinical studies. SETTING: Single institution ICU. PATIENTS/SU
