Association of metals (mercury, cadmium and zinc) with metallothionein-like proteins in storage organs of stranded dolphins from the Mediterranean sea (Southern Italy).

Selected toxic and essential metals (mercury, Hg; cadmium, Cd; and zinc, Zn) were determined in the liver and in the kidney collected from 13 dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba and Tursiops truncatus) stranded along the southern coasts of Italy from 1991 to 1999. Liver samples were also analysed for their methyl mercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) contents. For subcellular fractionation, liver and kidney samples were homogenized in Tris-HCl buffer; after centrifugation, the supernatant (cytosol) was separated from pellets (insoluble fraction), heated at 80 degrees C for 10 min and centrifuged in ord…

A case report of live-stranded rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) with plastic debris ingestion on the Pacific coast of Japan.

A juvenile rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) was live-stranded and rescued in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. From the results of diagnostic examinations, blood tests indicated that the dolphin was malnourished, dehydrated, and anemic. The dolphin died on sixth day of rescue despite treatment. At autopsy, 570 g of foreign material, including 34 pieces of cellophanes and plastic debris (PD), were found in the forestomach. Additional gross findings, including some endoparasitism and presence of accessory spleens were also identified. This is the first case in Japan which accidental ingestion

First confirmed reports of the isolation of Brucella ceti from a Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus and a killer whale Orcinus orca.

Brucella ceti has been recovered from a number species of cetaceans worldwide over the last 25 yr. Here we report, for the first time, the recovery of B. ceti from a Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus and a killer whale Orcinus orca. Recovery from an abdominal mass in the dolphin provides further evidence of the systemic pathogenic potential for B. ceti infection in cetaceans. The isolation of B. ceti ST23 (porpoise cluster) from a killer whale from a group known to eat other marine mammals raises the possibility of infection via ingestion. This report takes the number of cetacean species in UK c

Changes in mercury distribution and its body burden in delphinids affected by a morbillivirus infection: Evidences of methylmercury intoxication in Guiana dolphin.

An unusual mortality event (UME) attributed to morbillivirus infection was identified in two Guiana dolphin populations from the Southeastern Brazilian coast. The aim of this study was to characterize total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) bioaccumulation and body burden in Guiana dolphins from Sepetiba Bay (RJ) collected before (n = 61) and during the UME (n = 20). Significantly lower Se concentrations were found in the livers of individuals collected during the UME (Mann-Whitney test; p = 0.03), probably due to impairment of the detoxification process in the liver. There…

Genomic sequencing of a virus representing a novel type within the species Dyopipapillomavirus 1 in an Indian River Lagoon bottlenose dolphin.

Fecal samples collected from free-ranging Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (BDs) in the Indian River Lagoon of Florida were processed for viral discovery using a next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach. A 693-bp contig identified in the NGS data was nearly identical to the partial L1 gene sequence of a papillomavirus (PV) previously found in a penile papilloma in a killer whale (Orcinus orca). Based on this partial bottlenose dolphin papillomavirus (BDPV) sequence, a nested inverse PCR and primer-walking strategy was employed to generate the complete genome sequence. The full BDPV genome consist…

A new Synthesium species (Digenea: Brachycladiidae) from the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Cetacea: Delphinidae) in Southwestern Atlantic waters.

A new species of Synthesium from the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus in South Brazilian waters is described. Morphological and molecular identification was performed, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out using the ribosomal small subunit and internal transcribed spacer 1 and the mitochondrial NDH dehydrogenase subunit 3 and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 genes. The main characteristics of the new species are the subterminal round-shaped oral sucker, the anterior distribution of vitellaria reaching the level of the ovary and the oval-shaped testes. The results obtained with the mole

Possible age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) and corresponding change in echolocation parameters in a stranded Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin.

The hearing and echolocation clicks of a stranded Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) in Zhuhai, China, were studied. This animal had been repeatedly observed in the wild before it was stranded and its age was estimated to be ~40 years. The animal's hearing was measured using a non-invasive auditory evoked potential (AEP) method. Echolocation clicks produced by the dolphin were recorded when the animal was freely swimming in a 7.5 m (width)×22 m (length)×4.8 m (structural depth) pool with a water depth of ~2.5 m. The hearing and echolocation clicks of the studied dolphin were compa

A quantitative study of neuronal and glial numerical density in the visual cortex of the bottlenose dolphin: evidence for a specialized subarea and changes with age.

Neuronal and glial numerical densities were measured in the lateral gyrus of the cerebral hemisphere of dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from the neonatal period to adulthood. The cortex studied is the area known to be visually excitable in evoked potential studies. Two distinct parts of the adult lateral gyrus are identifiable, one relatively anterior, in which neuronal density is 23,000/mm3, the other more posterior, with almost double this density. In a neonate, the neuronal density in the anterior lateral gyrus was found to be more than double that of the adult. No samples from the immature p…

Enhancing Intra-Specific Population Genetic Studies of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Irish Waters by Integrating Least Invasive Sampling and Environmental DNA (eDNA).

Population genetic studies provide important data for evidence-based conservation and management of marine mammal species. Obtaining tissue and genetic material from marine mammals is challenging, often leading to limited sample sizes, however emerging least-invasive sampling methods, such as extra-organismal DNA (e.g., blows) and environmental DNA (eDNA) (e.g., water), have the potential to provide additional samples for intra-specific genetic studies. Thus, this study aimed at further investigating population genetic structure of Irish bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) by corroboratin…

Trace element concentrations in common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the Celtic Seas ecoregion: Interelement relationships and effects of life history and health status.

Given the increased extraction of trace elements for use by new and emerging technologies, monitoring the environmental fate and potential effects of these compounds within the aquatic environment has never been more critical. Here, hepatic trace element concentrations were assessed in a key sentinel predator, the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), using a long-term dataset. Variation in concentrations were assessed in relation to other elements, time period, decomposition state, sex, age, total body length, sexual maturity and nutritional status, and cause of death. Additionally, mercury tox

Towards non-invasive heart rate monitoring in free-ranging cetaceans: a unipolar suction cup tag measured the heart rate of trained Risso's dolphins.

Heart rate monitoring in free-ranging cetaceans to understand their behavioural ecology and diving physiology is challenging. Here, we developed a simple, non-invasive method to monitor the heart rate of cetaceans in the field using an electrocardiogram-measuring device and a single suction cup equipped with an electrode. The unipolar suction cup was placed on the left lateral body surface behind the pectoral fin of Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) and a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) in captivity; their heart rate was successfully monitored. We observed large heart rate oscillati…

Microscopic localization of mercury-selenium interaction products in liver, kidney, lung and brain of Mediterranean striped dolphins (Stenella Coeruleoalba) by silver enhancement kit.

Microscopic observation, using physical development of silver, was carried out to localize the mercury-selenium interaction products in the organs of Mediterranean striped dolphins. The silver-metal reaction products were located mainly in hepatocytes and macrophages for liver, in proximal tubules for kidney. They were less abundant in lung than in liver and kidney. The result of semi-quantitative histochemistry tests showed that silver staining deposits were more abundant at relatively high metal concentrations than low metal contents, but independent of the metal contents. Comparisons with t…

Postmortem computed tomography and pathology reveal multiple traumatic events in a stranded bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus in Alabama, USA.

This report describes a severely emaciated adult female bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus found dead in September 2021 with numerous traumatic injuries. The animal stranded in coastal Alabama, USA, a hotspot in the Gulf of Mexico for trauma-related marine mammal strandings. A combination of traditional and advanced diagnostic techniques including postmortem examination, histopathology, and computed tomography revealed trauma from multiple events, including rib and vertebral fractures of varying chronicity and a more recent catfish barb penetrating the diaphragm with associated tissue necro

Interstellar encounter: Postmortem imaging and virtopsy on a preserved anencephalic Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin specimen after 30 years.

BACKGROUND: Anencephaly is a deadly type of cephalic axial skeletal and neural disorder with a multifactorial aetiology that causes the failure of the rostral neuropore closure, compromising the formation of the neural folds, basicranium, and neurocranium. In cetaceans, there is only one report of this fetal abnormality, dated in late 1991, in a male stillborn Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and diagnosed using transabdominal ultrasonography on its mother that was kept under human care in the Ocean Park Corporation. After birth, physical and general radiographic examination

Anatomical and volumetric description of the guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) brain from an ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging.

The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) is a common species along Central and South American coastal waters. Although much effort has been made to understand its behavioral ecology and evolution, very little is known about its brain. The use of ultra-high field MRI in anatomical descriptions of cetacean brains is a very promising approach that is still uncommon. In this study, we present for the first time a full anatomical description of the Guiana dolphin's brain based on high-resolution ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging, providing an exceptional level of brain anatomical details,

Pyogranulomatous obliterative laryngotracheitis by Rhizopus arrhizus (syn. R. oryzae) in a free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphin Stenella frontalis.

We report the gross and microscopic findings and molecular identification of fungal hyphate infection in a juvenile female Atlantic spotted dolphin Stenella frontalis found dead off Arguineguin, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). On necropsy examination, the animal had a large cranial intrathoracic mass and multiple variably-sized nodules throughout the larynx and trachea that obliterated the lumen. Microscopically, the masses were composed of abundant pyogranulomatous inflammation with numerous fungal hyphae. These were pauciseptate (coenocytic) and had non-parallel walls, non-dichotomous

Vibrio parahaemolyticus- and V. alginolyticus-associated meningo-encephalitis in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) from the Adriatic coast of Italy.

A case of Vibrio parahaemolyticus- and V. alginolyticus-associated meningo-encephalitis in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) found stranded along the Adriatic coast of Italy in 2016 is herein reported, along with a minireview on V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus infections in aquatic mammals. Macroscopically, two abscesses were found in the dolphin's forebrain, along with an extensive, bilateral, parasitic broncho-pneumonia. Histologically, a suppurative-to-pyogranulomatous meningo-encephalitis involved the brain but not the cerebellum. Microbiological investigations yielded iso
