[Submaximal spiroergometric stress study in patients with mixed dust pneumoconiosis].

Disabilities of patients with coal-workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) are currently estimated by changes in lung function at rest and the degree of dust equivalents in chest x-ray (ILO-classification 1980). Functional disturbances during exercise are not taken into consideration on a regular basis. We assumed that standardised sub-maximal exercise tests might be useful even in disabled patients to give additional information on functional disabilities of patients with CWP. The impact of low-grade anthracosilicosis on ventilation and gas exchange during exercise was assessed in 20 patients (all male…

[Acute respiratory insufficiency after inhaling concrete dust--a case report].

UNLABELLED: Inhalation of inorganic, inert dusts, like concrete dust, has generally not been considered dangerous. Very rarely alterations following chronic exposures can be observed, such as airflow obstruction and increased mucous secretion. Acute reactions in terms of acute respiratory failure have not been described so far. CASE REPORT: The present case report introduces a 54-year old male patient who developed acute respiratory failure after sawing a concrete block for several hours without wearing a face mask. Save for a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease he was unremarkable for his …

[Habitual vomiting due to dust mite allergy. A case report].

It has been demonstrated that: a) part of the inhalant allergenic particles we normally breath, adhere to the oropharyngeal mucosa, and eventually progress to the gastrointestinal tract; b) digestive tract mucosa is able to produce specific IgE against aeroallergens even before than respiratory tract mucosa. The case is described of a 5-year-old girl who presented a daily vomiting since she was 6 months. All clinical instrumental and laboratory findings had been unable to reach a definite diagnosis. SPT (inhalants and foods): Dermatoph. pteronyssinus: + (confirmed by RAST). The patient had an

Reducing workers' dust exposure during bag stacking in enclosed vehicles.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated cost effective systems to ventilate enclosed vehicles being loaded directly with bagged product material at mineral processing plants. This evaluation included both forms of transportation: railcars and trailer trucks. The goal of this research was to lower the dust exposure of workers stacking bags in these enclosed vehicles; these workers usually have the highest dust exposures in the entire processing plant. The problem occurs because there is no mechanical ventilation inside these vehicles. As the vehicle is being loaded, dust concentrations increase to su…

Plant constituents of cotton dust and lung effects after inhalation.

Experiments were performed to assess pulmonary reactions after inhalation of cotton dusts with different levels of tannins, terpenoid aldehydes and bacterial endotoxins. Guinea-pigs were exposed to cotton dust. Free lung cells were obtained by lavage 24 h later. A dose-response relationship was found between the number of neutrophils and the amount of endotoxin in the dust. No influence of terpenoid aldehyde or tannin levels could be detected. Cotton mill workers were exposed to dust from glanded and glandless cottons in an experimental cardroom. The average decreases in forced expiratory volu…

House dust mite allergy and atopic eczema: a case report.

Sequential measurements were made of total and specific serum IgE concentrations in an adult patient with severe atopic eczema. Initially, the total serum IgE concentration and the concentration of IgE antibody to house dust mite were very high. These concentrations decreased over the next 3 years, following amelioration of her eczema. However, they rose again when her eczema worsened as a result of marital problems and fell once again with amelioration of her eczema after separation from her husband. The IgE concentrations to other common allergens, however, remained stable during this period…

Pleural thickening: its significance and relationship to asbestos dust exposure.

The admission chest radiographs of 824 were screened for the presence of bilateral pleural thickening. Those patients with pleural thickening were scored according to the ILO classification of radiographs of the pneumoconioses. The prevalence of bilateral pleural thickening was high (6.2%) in these patients, of whom 67% had an environmental or occupational history suggestive of asbestos exposure. The predictive value of bilateral pleural thickening alone as an indicator of previous asbestos exposure was 67%. If one excludes known medical or surgical etiologies of pleural thickening then the pr

Metal content of settled railway dust: factors affecting iron (Fe) content of dust in railway stations in England and implications for human health exposure assessments.

Railway infrastructure generates metal-containing particles enriched in elements with known health impacts, which are released into the environment and may expose railway users and workers. This study aimed to characterise the metal composition of settled dust in railway stations, estimate deposition rates, and identify station characteristics associated with elevated exposure. Settled dust samples were collected using dust wipes from undisturbed surfaces in nine English railway stations, which enabled opportunistic metals analysis. Metal concentrations were quantified using Inductively Couple…

A comparison of mortality related to urban air particles between periods with Asian dust days and without Asian dust days in Seoul, Korea, 2000-2004.

Recent papers have reported that Asian dust events have been associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality and rates of respiratory illness. The current study was designed to estimate the relative risk of mortality associated with Asian dust events. We used the daily counts of non-accidental deaths, air pollution and meteorological data in Seoul, Korea from 2000 to 2004. We divided all days during the study period into two groups according to the presence or absence of Asian dust events. For each group, we conducted time-series analysis to estimate the relative risk of total non-accid…

From microscale redox cycling to urban dust: A three-stage Cu isotope fractionation model for arid tailings and the role in tracing Cu in street dust.

Cu-isotope compositions, supported by XAS speciation, reveal a three-stage cyclic model of copper mobility in historical mine tailings from … processes that further modify the residual isotopic signature. The Cu isotope composition of street dust (-0.10 to +0.30‰) indicates that mining-derived Cu coexists with an additional non-exhaust vehicular Cu source, including efflorescence salts formed on worn lead-acid batteries, whose Cu isotope composition is characterized here for the first time.

Road dust exposure and human corneal damage in a plateau high geological background provincial capital city: Spatial distribution, sources, bioaccessibility, and cytotoxicity of dust heavy metals.

Ocular surface diseases are common in the plateau city, Kunming China, the continued daily exposure to heavy metals in dust may be an important inducement. In this study, the 150 road dust samples from five functional areas in Kunming were collected. The concentrations, distribution, possible sources, and bioaccessibility of heavy metals were analyzed. The adverse effects of dust extracts on human corneal epithelial cells and the underlying mechanisms were also assessed. The concentrations (mg·kg-1) of As (19.1), Cd (2.67), Cr (90.5), Cu (123), Pb (78.4), and Zn (389) in road dust were higher …

Facility-wide assessment of occupational exposure to dust, noise, and formaldehyde.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to particulate matter, hazardous gases, and noise among workers causes millions of deaths, injuries, and disabilities annually. These exposures are not measured frequently, and most workers are never monitored because resources for monitoring are limited globally. Even in high-income countries, just two or three samples per workplace inspection are collected on average. Considerably larger sample sizes are required to estimate measures of central tendency and upper percentiles of common exposure distributions. Therefore, interventions and epidemiological studies often rely

Heat and Dust Impacts on the Health of Refugees in Zaatari Refugee Camp.

Climate-linked heatwaves and dust storms can exacerbate non-communicable disease (NCD) morbidity, yet quantitative evidence from displacement settings remains limited. We assessed short-term impacts of heat and dust events on symptom burden among Syrian refugees with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Jordan's Zaatari Camp. We conducted a prospective study of 660 adults receiving care at King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Clinics (KS-Relief) clinics in Zaatari across three periods aligned to seasonal heatwaves. Self-reported symptoms following heatwaves and dust storms were collected via…

Impact of sand and dust storms on mortality in Jinan City, China.

BACKGROUND: Sand and dust storms (SDSs) cause considerable health risks worldwide. China is a country seriously affected by SDSs, however only few studies researched the risk of SDS in China. The insufficient evidence on SDS hampers effective measures to mitigate its harm. OBJECTIVE: To reveal the mortality risks associated with SDSs in Jinan City and identify sensitive populations vulnerable to these events. METHODS: For this time-stratified case-crossover study, we collected daily data on all-cause, circulatory, and respiratory deaths, as well as air pollution and meteorological informatio…
