Hearing loss and CT findings of 200 ears from 102 cases with congenital malformation of inner ear were included in our study. Hearing loss was typically bilateral severe, or total deafness. 75 percent of them were found deaf within one-year-old. In addition, 47 patients' (46%) mothers were noted to have caught a cold in first trimester of pregnancy. Temporal bone abnormalties were described as five types: 1. Michel malformation, 2. Mondini malformation, 3. enlargement of the vestibular aqueducts, 4. developmental deformity of cochlear aqueduct, 5. developmental deformity of internal acoustic m

This study, merging data from two different clinics, was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery using the Denver Inner Ear Shunt operation for Meniere's disease. This surgery was performed by the senior authors (C.G.J., J.R.E.D., and M.E.G.) between May 1984 and October 1986, after we attended the Colorado Otologic Research Center (CORC) instructional course. Sixty-six and thirty-four cases, respectively, were performed. Follow-up questionnaires were sent to this total of 100 patients. Fifty-six patients returned completed questionnaires, which formed the ba

Congenital inner ear anomalies are reported in temporal bones of a 22-month-old boy with Waardenburg's syndrome and Hirschsprung's disease. Although no changes in the central auditory pathway were identified, peripheral lesions of the cochlear and vestibular membranous labyrinth were observed. Bilateral atrophy of the organ of Corti and stria, and a sparsity of spiral ganglion cells were observed in the cochlea. Degeneration of the vestibular end organs, including a loss of Scarpa's ganglion cells, was also seen. This is the first report of temporal bone histopathology associated with Waardenb

We report on two patients with sudden hearing loss occurring immediately after registration of an acoustically elicited acoustic reflex with pure tones of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 cps and 125 dB HL. Aetiology and patho-physiology of this form of acute acoustic trauma are discussed. An obvious destruction of middle ear structures or the membrane of the round and oval window can be excluded. Assuming pre-existing disposition, e.g. distortion of microcirculation in the cochlea, the acoustic stimulus is merely the trigger for the imminent sudden hearing loss. Therefore, we suggest to limit the st

The histological changes in the inner ear were compared with the hearing ability in insulin deficiency diabetes of rats. 38 LEW-Han-rats were treated with streptocotocin; 34 of these became diabetic, as proved by the glucose tolerance test. 22 rats served as controls. The diabetes was not treated. For a period of up to 440 days the weight, blood glucose and auditory function were controlled in the living animals. Auditory function was tested by means of pinnal reflex of Preyer for a frequency range between 1000 and 20000 cps. With regard to the mean values of frequency, neither a decrease nor

Temporary or permanent threshold shift of bone conduction occurs frequently in acute or chronic otitis media. The sensorineural hearing loss is dependent on the age of the patient and the duration of the illness. Fluid in the middle ear may impede sound transmission and oxygen transport to the inner ear. In middle ear inflammation noxious substances may pass across the round window membrane leading to serous labyrinthitis. In therapy ototoxic drugs and operations (tympanoplasty) can cause sensorineural deafness.

Hearing and balance rely on coordinated activity of multiple inner ear cell types, yet the mechanisms governing their development and specification in humans remain unclear. Consequently, this limits our understanding of how disease genes affect cell type formation and function, limiting the development of targeted treatments, including gene therapies. Here we present the Human Inner Ear Development snRNA-seq Atlas (HIEDRA), a single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of the human inner ear spanning the first and second trimesters. HIEDRA maps sensory and nonsensory epithelia, neurons and mesenchyme

Ménière disease (MD) is a chronic inner ear disorder characterized by recurrent vertigo, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, and tinnitus, but its etiology remains poorly understood. We performed a genome-wide meta-analysis of 8,969 MD case subjects and 1,962,542 control subjects across five biobanks, identifying five independent genome-wide significant loci and estimating an observed-scale SNP heritability of 7% (SE 0.8%), indicating a modest but significant contribution of common genetic variation to MD risk. The genome-wide significant signals comprise two independent variants at EYA4,

Hearing loss affects over 430 million people worldwide, yet effective treatments remain limited, in part due to challenges of inner ear drug delivery, a process that is risky, unreliable, and inefficient. Addressing this challenge calls for delivery approaches that ensure therapies reach the inner ear safely and effectively. Intratympanic (IT) injection, which delivers drugs directly into the middle ear, is currently the safest method for preserving cochlear integrity. However, its efficiency is limited by the round window membrane (RWM), a barrier with tight junctions that restricts therapy-r

Fetal infection with human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) can cause sensorineural hearing loss and vestibular impairment, yet its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aims to identify potential target cell types of hCMV in the human fetal inner ear. Viral particles use several envelope glycoproteins to enter target cells, including the pentameric complex, the trimeric complex and glycoprotein B. Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA) serves as the receptor in fibroblasts, neuropilin-2 (NRP2) in epithelial, endothelial and dendritic cells as well as in leukocytes. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) has become a widely used tool for studying the inner ear morphology of vertebrates. Amphisbaenians are one of the most specialized groups of fossorial reptiles but are poorly understood relative to other squamate reptile. In this paper we survey the anatomy of the inner and middle ear of these fossorial reptiles using HRCT models and we describe qualitatively and quantitatively (using 3D morphometrics) the anatomy of the inner ear. Amphisbaenians are diverse in skull anatomy, especially in the configuration of the snout, which correlates with digging

HYPOTHESIS: The presence of bony inner ear malformations may associate with a number of anatomical abnormalities affecting the middle ear structures. Those malformations may create pitfalls and complications for cochlear implantation.
BACKGROUND: Inner ear malformations associate with varying degrees of hearing loss, and frequently require cochlear implantation for hearing rehabilitation. Therefore, the abnormalities affecting the middle- and inner-ear structures may increase the risk of surgical complications.
METHODS: We examined 38 human temporal bones from donors with bony inner ear malf

A 67-year-old woman was referred to the otolaryngology service after presenting to the emergency department for dizziness and loss of balance. She reported several similar episodes over the past years. Physical examination was unremarkable. A temporal bone CT scan revealed dehiscence between the bony carotid canal and the cochlea resulting in the diagnosis of carotid-cochlear dehiscence (CCD). CCD is an extremely rare condition involving the thinning of the bony canal separating the internal carotid artery from the cochlea. CCD is best diagnosed with temporal bone CT scan.
