A psycho-economic model of ecstasy consumption and related consequences: a multi-site study with community samples.

Becker and Murphy's (1988) theory of rational behavior suggests that economic factors play an influential role in the decision leading to drug consumption and possibly dependence. Psychological models, on the other hand, emphasize internal regulatory cues that motivate drug use and play a contributory role in dependence. Until now, the confluence of both economic and psychological models has not been tested empirically. The present study used latent-variable structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the influence of both economic (social anomie, unit price, and time spent acquiring drugs) …

Public health efforts to prevent expansion of alcohol retail availability in neighbourhoods with factors associated with high rates of alcohol-related harms: A case report.

This commentary illustrates a recent case study within Ontario, Canada, in which the application of sociodemographic and health data was used by public health to support a legal case to oppose a retail licence application to consume liquor at a corner store located within a neighbourhood that has experienced low socio-economic factors, including low income, high unemployment and low educational attainment levels. Communities in a similar situation may draw from this situation to prevent expansion of alcohol retail availability in neighbourhoods that have low socio-economic status populations a…

Patients with gallstones develop gallbladder cancer at an earlier age.

Significant proportions of Indian patients with gallbladder cancer are young. Multiple risk factors for gallbladder cancer are recognized among Indian patients. The effect of these risk factors on the age of development of gallbladder cancer is not known. We conducted a study to determine the influence of risk factors on the age at diagnosis of patients with gallbladder cancer and to assess the interactions between these risk factors. Patients with gallbladder cancer from two tertiary care institutions during the period 1994-2001 were prospectively studied. An ultrasound examination was done t

Addressing Economic Insecurities Can Improve Patient-Reported Outcomes in Lupus.

OBJECTIVE: Economic insecurities, such as food, housing, transportation, and financial challenges, are modifiable risk factors and influence patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We examined the following: (1) associations between economic insecurities and PROs, and (2) the impact of screening and addressing economic insecurities during SLE visits. METHODS: In the Collaborative Lupus Clinics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, patients were routinely screened for economic insecurities and met with a social worker (SW) during visits. Macro-conditions and immigrants' happiness: Is moving to a wealthy country all that matters?

Migrants look for a better life. In what kind of country will they live happiest? Many migrants aspire to move to wealthy countries, but non-economic factors might be important as well in making a country livable for migrants. This issue is addressed here by examining the impact of macroeconomic conditions and non-economic macro-conditions (good governance and a pleasant social climate) on immigrants' happiness in twenty European nations. We find that immigrants' happiness depends both on economic and non-economic macro-conditions. The social climate is especially important, particularly in te…

Health inequalities among people experiencing food insecurity. An intersectional approach.

The study examines the socioeconomic determinants of physical health among populations experiencing food insecurity and receiving free meals in soup kitchens in the Prefecture of Attica, Greece. Data were collected from the same six soup kitchens in 2012, 2017 and 2021, resulting in a dataset of 1533 observations. The study revealed that periods characterised by an economic recession are associated with deteriorated physical health of food-insecure people. Moreover, the study found that physical health deteriorations among food-insecure people are associated with older age, female gender, immi

The enabling and constraining factors-political, social, economic, and other-for these previous and current eradication programs can inform decision making regarding a proposed measles eradication initiative. METHODS: We reviewed the literature on the yaws, malaria, smallpox, guinea worm, and polio eradication programs and compared enabling and constraining factors for each of these programs with the same factors as they relate to a possible measles eradication initiative. The impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on health and wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): A case study of Kenya.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) remain endemic to many regions of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) left behind by socioeconomic progress. As such, these diseases are markers of extreme poverty and inequity that are propagated by the political, economic, social, and cultural systems that affect health and wellbeing. As countries embrace and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs of such vulnerable populations need to be addressed in local and global arenas. The research uses primary qualitative data collected from five NTD endemic counties of Kenya: interviews key

Exceptions to the rule: healthy deprived areas and unhealthy wealthy areas.

In general, inhabitants of low socio-economic areas are unhealthier than inhabitants of high socio-economic areas, but some areas are an exception to this rule. These exceptions imply that other factors besides the socio-economic level of an area contribute to the health of the inhabitants of an area, e.g. environmental factors. In our study we concentrate on areas within the Netherlands that are healthier or unhealthier than could be expected based on their socio-economic level. This study first identifies these areas and secondly determines which area characteristics distinguish these areas

Social context of sexual relationships among rural African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Reasons for the strikingly increased rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among African Americans in the rural Southeastern United States remain unclear. Investigators have devoted little attention to the potential influence of the social and economic context on sexual behaviors. GOAL: To examine the potential influence of these contextual factors on behaviors that promote the transmission of STIs. STUDY DESIGN: Focus group interviews in which African Americans from rural North Carolina discussed life in their communities and contextual factors affecting

An Auckland high school health survey.

To assess the importance of racial and socio-economic factors on the health of teenagers attending an Auckland High School a full clinical examination was conducted. The socio-economic status of the four major racial groups, European, Maori, Pacific Island Polynesian and Asian was relatively constant and predominantly from Social Classes 4 and 5. The pattern of health in each group was not significantly different between races with the exception of a high incidence of scabies and impetigo among the Maori and Pacific Island Polynesians. These skin infections were possibly related to a significa…

Representativeness of child controls recruited by random digit dialling.

Recruiting control subjects who are representative of the population from which the cases are drawn is a challenge in case-control studies. This paper examines the performance of random digit dialling (RDD) in obtaining a control sample, and the sample's representativeness of the population with respect to socio-economic status. The study subjects were recruited from 2003 to 2006 for a national, population-based case-control study investigating causes of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in children <15 years of age in Australia. Control families' addresses were linked to Australian Bureau o

Reproductive Performance in Dairy Cattle: Determinants of Conception Rate and Economic Consequences in Bangladesh.

Reproductive efficiency plays an important role in determining milk production and overall farm profitability, particularly in smallholder systems with limited resources. Poor fertility can lead to substantial economic losses. This study investigated factors associated with conception rate and evaluated the economic consequences of reproductive inefficiency in dairy farms across five randomly selected districts in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 120 dairy farms and 569 cows, including local, crossbred and Holstein Friesian (HF) breeds. A structured questionnaire was
