Severe tungiasis in underprivileged communities: case series from Brazil.

Tungiasis is caused by infestation with the sand flea (Tunga penetrans). This ectoparasitosis is endemic in economically depressed communities in South American and African countries. Tungiasis is usually considered an entomologic nuisance and does not receive much attention from healthcare professionals. During a study on tungiasis-related disease in an economically depressed area in Fortaleza, northeast Brazil, we identified 16 persons infested with an extremely high number of parasites. These patients had >50 lesions each and showed signs of intense acute and chronic inflammation. Superinfe

Social and Emotional Fears and Worries Influencing the Quality of Life of Female Celiac Disease Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet.

The gluten-free diet is effective in the majority of celiac disease (CD) patients, but it is burdensome and may influence quality of life (QoL). The aim of the study was to analyze the social and emotional fears and worries influencing the QoL of female CD patients following a gluten-free (GF) diet, as well as to indicate the sociodemographic interfering factors. The study was conducted on a group of 251 female CD patients, while emotional, social and worries subscales of the Celiac Disease Questionnaire (CDQ) were applied, as well as purchase-related emotions and behaviors were assessed. Sexonomics: a commentary and review of selected sexually transmitted disease studies in the economics literature.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this review is to highlight selected studies in the economics literature that address sexually transmitted disease (STD)-related topics that are typically not examined in the STD literature. METHODS: Two databases (EconLit and Web of Science) were searched to locate STD-related articles in the economics journals. Relevant articles were also identified in other ways, such as informal discussions with colleagues familiar with the literature. To maintain a focus on unique STD-related topics, studies with topics common in the STD literature (e.g., cost-effectiveness, tr

The "evidence-based practice inventory": reliability and validity was demonstrated for a novel instrument to identify barriers and facilitators for Evidence Based Practice in health care.

OBJECTIVES: To design and validate a practical questionnaire for clinicians, to identify barriers and facilitators for evidence-based practice (EBP), that is, the use of research evidence in patient care. The inventory is ultimately intended for departments to assess local conditions for EBP, to aim and evaluate efforts at improving or maximizing EBP. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We derived candidate items from existing EBP scales, psychology, and behavioral economics. In an online Delphi study, 537 international expert clinicians, researchers, teachers, and policymakers interested in EBP identi

Sexual health outcomes improvement in sickle cell disease: a matter of health policy?

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic priapism is a true male sexual dysfunction, consisting of uncontrollable, prolonged, and often painful erections of the penis. A commonly observed outcome, as a result of erectile tissue damage and fibrosis in this setting, is the complete loss of natural erectile ability. Males with sickle cell disease (SCD) are commonly affected. Given the adverse health consequences of this condition coupled with its specific population extent, health policy considerations are warranted. AIM: This article aimed to study circumstances surrounding priapism associated with SCD for the p

Economic Burden of Health Conditions Associated With Adverse Childhood Experiences Among US Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are preventable, potentially traumatic events in childhood, such as experiencing abuse or neglect, witnessing violence, or living in a household with substance use disorder, mental health problems, or instability from parental separation or incarceration. Adults who had ACEs have more harmful risk behaviors and worse health outcomes; the economic burden associated with these issues is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the economic burden of ACE-associated health conditions among US adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this economic ev

Does controlling shareholders' share pledge exacerbate excessive financialization of enterprises?-Evidence from performance pressure perspective.

Based on the perspective of performance pressure, we explore the influence of controlling shareholders' share pledge on excessive financialization behavior of enterprises and its internal mechanism. The results show that the share pledge of controlling shareholders is positively correlated with the excessive financialization behavior of enterprises. After the controlling shareholder's share pledge, the actual performance of the enterprise is lower than expected, causing the short-sighted behavior of the management, which makes the management willing to conspire with the controlling shareholder

Self-beneficial transactional social dynamics for cooperation in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome: a mixed-subject analysis using computational pragmatics.

BACKGROUND: Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) is a rare genetic disorder with documented cognitive and behavioral challenges. However, its socio-pragmatic dynamics remain underexplored, particularly in cooperative interactions where social norms and economic considerations intersect. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the socio-behavioral dynamics of SDS, focusing on how children with the condition navigate cooperative interactions. Using computational pragmatics, we aimed to identify the underlying principles guiding their social behavior. METHODS: A cohort of 10 children (5 SDS, 5 matched c

Cost-effectiveness of transdiagnostic group cognitive behavioral therapy for emotional disorders in primary care: An analysis of the PsicAP clinical trial.

UNLABELLED: Objective/s: Transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy has proven to be an effective treatment for emotional disorders. However, the cost-effectiveness of group Transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy remains unknown. Given the growing demand for psychological care in primary care in the context of limited resources, an economic evaluation of transdiagnostic group cognitive behavioral therapy (TD-GCBT) would provide valuable data for treatment decision making. AIMS: To conduct an economic evaluation of the PsicAP treatment protocol. METHOD: The PsicAP-Costs was a multicen

Intersectoral Costs and Benefits of Mental and Behavioural Disorders in the Education Sector: an Exploration of Costing Methods.

BACKGROUND: The inclusion of indirect spillover costs and benefits that occur in non-healthcare sectors of society is necessary to make optimal societal decisions when assessing the cost effectiveness of healthcare interventions. Education costs and benefits are relevant in the disease area of mental and behavioral disorders, but their inclusion in economic evaluations is largely neglected due to lack of methodological knowledge. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to explore, using a scoping review, the identification, measurement, and valuation methods used to assess the impact of mental and

Video Game Addiction in Young People (8-18 Years Old) after the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Grey Area of Addiction and the Phenomenon of "Gaming Non-Pathological Abuse (GNPA)".

INTRODUCTION: In the literature, video game addiction in youths is correlated with dysfunctional symptoms of anxiety, emotional disorders, and mood disorders, and the pandemic period of 2020-2022 has favored the aggravation of this behavioral addiction. Therefore, we identified the need to analyze this phenomenon with an emphasis on the risks and correlates related to deviance and maladjustment from a prospective perspective, seeking to understand the impact of the individual variables examined. AIM: To demonstrate whether the condition of "gaming non-pathological abuse" (GNPA) promotes psych

The effectiveness of individual-, group-, and community-level HIV behavioral risk-reduction interventions for adult men who have sex with men: a systematic review.

This article presents the results of a systematic review of the effectiveness and economic efficiency of individual-, group-, and community-level behavioral interventions intended to reduce the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted HIV in adult men who have sex with men (MSM). These results form the basis for recommendations by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services on the use of these interventions. Sexual risk behavior and condom use were the outcomes used to assess effectiveness. Intervention effectiveness on biological outcomes could not be assessed because too few studies of ade

Insights for dementia risk reduction among lower SES adults in OECD countries: scoping review of interventions targeting multiple common health risk factors.

The number of people living with dementia is expected to rise to 153 million cases globally by 2050. This will come at a high economic and human cost to societies with disproportionate effects on socioeconomically disadvantaged groups who experience greater exposures to- and fewer protections from- the environmental, social and behavioural drivers of dementia risk. Almost half (45%) of dementia incidence could theoretically be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors. While several studies have demonstrated the feasibility of multidomain dementia risk reduction interventio

Conditioned associations and economic decision biases.

Humans show substantial deviation from rationality during economic decision making under uncertainty. A computational perspective suggests these deviations arise out of an interaction between distinct valuation systems in the brain. Here, we provide behavioural data showing that the incidental presentation of aversive and appetitive conditioned stimuli can alter subjects' preferences in an economic task, involving a choice between a safe or gamble option. These behavioural effects informed a model-based analysis of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment, involving an identic

The precursors of governance in the Maine lobster fishery.

Collective action is more likely to occur and to be effective when it is consistent with the self-interest of the affected individuals. The Maine lobster fishery is an instructive example of biological and technological circumstances combining with individual self-interest to create conditions favorable to collective action. The model describes the way social structure emerges from the adaptive behavior of competing fishers. Fishers compete in two ways: in a scramble to find the lobsters first and by directly interfering in other fishers' ability to compete, i.e., by cutting their traps. Both
