BACKGROUND Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with multiple comorbidities including psoriatic arthritis (PsA), atherosclerotic disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and depression. Interestingly, nonischemic cardiomyopathy, especially dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), has been associated with psoriasis and reported in only in a few cases in the literature. CASE REPORT We report the rare case of a 58-year-old man with a medical history of untreated severe psoriasis and PsA who presented with a sudden onset of shortness of breath. Laboratory and radio

We experienced two cases of circulatory failure after local infiltration of 0.0005% epinephrine solution for the purpose of prophylactic hemostasis during tonsillectomy under sevoflurane anesthesia. Case 1: A 14 year-old girl developed ventricular bigeminy, tachycardia and hypertension following infiltration of the epinephrine solution 6ml around the tonsil. Sinus rhythm returned with intravenous lidocaine 40 mg and propranolol 0.4 mg. However, the patient showed gradually decreasing heart rate, depressed ST segments and inverted T waves and poor peripheral circulation. Her blood pressure decr

Viral (lymphocytic) meningitis typically does not cause sudden death, especially in the absence of severe inflammation in the brain or other organs. We report 2 toddlers with clinical evidence of a viral infection who died unexpectedly and were found at autopsy to have lymphocytic meningitis associated with severe brain edema, transtentorial herniation, neurogenic pulmonary edema and hemorrhage, and cardiomegaly. Influenza A virus, demonstrated in tracheal epithelium by immunocytochemistry, is the presumed cause of the mild meningitis in 1 case; adenovirus was cultured from swabs of the brain

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is characterized by yellowish nails, lymphedema, sinusitis, and pulmonary involvement and can be triggered by various underlying conditions, such as sinusitis or titanium exposure from an artificial joint or dental implant. Since YNS is potentially treatable, its timely diagnosis is important. The authors recently experienced a case of YNS in a patient who developed sinusitis, yellowish nails, bilateral edema of the extremities, and subclinical rheumatoid arthritis after the implantation of a cardiac pacemaker made from titanium. This case may be the first report of

We report a 18 years old woman that was admitted with a history of four days of cardiac failure with acute pulmonary edema, high blood pressure, left ventricular dilatation and moderate to severe systolic dysfunction. Twenty four hours after admission she had a miscarriage, expelling a mole. The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism caused by a mole and early pre eclampsia was confirmed and the patient was managed with diuretics and dopamine. Symptoms abated, thyroid function tests, cardiac function and size returned to normal values and the patient was discharged asymptomatic, ten days after admission

Bothrops lanceolatus (Bl), a snake endemic to Martinique, is responsible for numerous envenomations annually, leading to severe complications such as thrombosis, necrosis, and hemorrhage. This case series investigates the link between Bothrops lanceolatus envenomation and acute myocarditis, utilizing cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance management strategies. In both cases, cardiac MRI confirmed myocarditis with edema, and subsequent cerebral MRI revealed bilateral infarcts. Elevated troponin levels further supported the myocarditis diagnosis. Multiple doses of Bothrofav® antive

Uhl's anomaly is a very rare malformation of unknown cause, characterized by complete or partial absence of the right ventricular myocardium. The cardiac malformation causes progressive right heart failure, increased right-sided cardiac pressure, massive peripheral edema, and ascites. Patients usually present in infancy and rarely survive to adulthood. Previously, diagnosis was made at post-mortem evaluation, but advances in cardiac imaging now permit diagnosis during fetal life. We report a case of Uhl's anomaly in a newborn baby imaged at 23 + 3 weeks of gestation by fetal echocardiography.

Aging is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but the role of the cardiac lymphatic vasculature in this process remains poorly understood. Here we show that aging reduces cardiac lymphatic vessel density in humans and mice and induces structural remodeling characterized by tighter, zipper-like endothelial junctions. These changes are associated with immune cell infiltration, fibrinogen and amyloid accumulation, and myocardial edema. Selective reduction of cardiac lymphatics in young mice, through Flt4 (VEGFR3) depletion or soluble Flt4 overexpression, recapitulates key features of c

BACKGROUND: Cardiac light-chain (AL) amyloidosis carries high early mortality due to rapid hemodynamic deterioration. Hematologic response does not always translate into cardiac recovery, particularly in advanced disease.
CASE SUMMARY: A 66-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and chronic edema. Electrocardiography showed low QRS voltage, and echocardiography revealed severe concentric thickening with apical sparing on strain imaging. Free λ light chains were markedly elevated, and bone marrow biopsy confirmed plasma cell myeloma. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging supported infiltrative car

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging has witnessed a transformative shift with the integration of parametric mapping techniques, such as T1 and T2 mapping and extracellular volume fraction. These techniques play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of cardiac function and structure, providing unique insights into myocardial tissue properties. Native T1 mapping is particularly valuable, correlating with histopathological fibrosis and serving as a marker for various cardiac pathologies. Extracellular volume fraction, an early indicator of myocardial remodeling, predicts adverse outcomes i

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are blood vessel malformations, often untreated if asymptomatic. However, upon cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, cerebral edema/hemorrhage may occur. We successful performed mitral valve plasty for a case of severe mitral regurgitation with multiple CCMs. Preoperative head magnetic resonance imaging and strict perioperative management are important.

AIMS: To assess the prognostic value of LL criteria in AM.
METHODS: 257 consecutive hemodynamically stable patients fulfilling updated LL criteria for diagnosis of clinically suspected AM (presenting with chest pain, troponin raise and no obstructive coronary artery) were enrolled. CMR imaging was performed using 1.5-T scanners following Updated LL criteria. Patients were divided into two groups accordingly to the combination of LL criteria: those with AM diagnosis made using the "original" LL Criteria (DOC), who exhibited both myocardial edema on T2-STIR images and non-ischemic late gadolini

Hyperoside, a common flavonoid glycoside, was evaluated for developmental toxicity in zebrafish embryos (6-96 hpf). Hyperoside reduced hatchability and survival (96-h LC50 170.9 μM; LC10 118.3 μM) and caused prominent cardiac defects, including tachycardia, pericardial edema, and atrioventricular malformation, along with altered expression of cardiac markers (nppa, vmhc, sox9b, and gata4). Transcriptomic and phenotypic assays indicated the activation of oxidative stress and apoptosis pathways. Hyperoside increased ROS and MDA, decreased antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD and CAT), and induced

Pericardial effusion is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity. It can be associated with various cardiac and non-cardiac disorders. Dense deposit disease (DDD) is a rare kidney disease caused by uncontrolled activation of the alternative complement pathway. We are reporting a seven-year-old male child who was diagnosed to have DDD approved by renal biopsy and presented with shortness of breath, cough, and fever. Chest X-ray displayed cardiomegaly. Thereafter, echocardiography showed massive pericardial effusion and left ventricle compression with a risk for cardiac tampon

PURPOSE: This review recalls the principles developed over a century to describe trans-capillary fluid exchanges concerning in particular the lung during exercise, a specific condition where dyspnea is a leading symptom, the question being whether this symptom simply relates to fatigue or also implies some degree of lung edema.
METHOD: Data from experimental models of lung edema are recalled aiming to: (1) describe how extravascular lung water is strictly controlled by "safety factors" in physiological conditions, (2) consider how waning of "safety factors" inevitably leads to development of

A syndrome of acute pulmonary edema has been previously reported among scuba divers in cold, European waters. Because of the temperatures involved, the name "cold-induced pulmonary edema" was coined in the original 1989 description. We report six individuals who developed the identical syndrome, five while diving in Puget Sound and one in the Gulf of Mexico. The four women and two men ranged in age from 24 to 60 yr. They experienced one to six episodes apiece, each with the development severe dyspnea at depth without excessive exertion. Associated symptoms included cough, weakness, expectorati
