Interprofessional Collaboration Between Mental Health Counselors and Nurses.

The continuous and rapid evolution of medical technology and the complexity of delivering person-centered care in the 21st century calls for collaboration among health care professionals. Global health now "involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-clinical care" (Koplan et al., 2009, p. 1995). The need for mental health practitioners to work in interprofessional contexts requires graduate and postgraduate programs to incorporate interprofessional education into

Physiotherapists' knowledge about the diagnosis, treatment and physical activity of patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a three-dimensional spinal deformity with an unknown etiology which, when left untreated, can have negative health consequences. Physiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of IS, which is why physiotherapists should have adequate theoretical and practical knowledge about IS diagnosis and treatment methods. The aim of this study was to assess physiotherapists' knowledge about IS, its diagnosis, treatment and recommended physical activities for subjects with IS. The influence of post-graduate courses, workplace, academic degree, work experience, education

Exploring the experiences of black, indigenous and racialized graduate students: The classroom as a space of alterity, hostility and pedagogical labour.

Based on 22 semi-structured interviews, this article explores the experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) graduate students in the social sciences and humanities at a medium-sized comprehensive university in Canada. This article explores how racialization and colonialism shape the experiences of BIPOC graduate students in the graduate-level classroom. BIPOC students may experience the classroom as a space of alterity, where they are made to feel alien and are pushed to represent their entire group; as a space of hostility where they encounter stereotypes and microaggressi

Alcohol and other drug problems in Australia: the urgent need for nurse education.

The economic, social and health costs associated with alcohol and other drug use, including medicines, impact on the Australian community profoundly. Many Australians use alcohol and other drugs (AODs) on a regular basis and a significant number experience problems at some time. There are about 25,000 drug-related deaths annually, the majority of which are related to alcohol and tobacco use. Many young people die or are injured as a direct result of alcohol intoxication, accidental overdose and related problems, and significant numbers of elderly people are hospitalised, permanently incapacita

Developing and successfully implementing a competency-based portfolio assessment system in a postgraduate family medicine residency program.

The use of portfolios in postgraduate medical residency education to support competency development is increasing; however, the processes by which these assessment systems are designed, implemented, and maintained are emergent. The authors describe the needs assessment, development, implementation, and continuing quality improvement processes that have shaped the Portfolio Assessment Support System (PASS) used by the postgraduate family medicine program at Queen's University since 2009. Their description includes the impetus for change and contextual realities that guided the effort, plus the

Competency in surgical residency training: defining and raising the bar.

Competency-based surgical residency training is rapidly becoming the norm across surgical specialties. Ensuring that graduating surgeons are competent to deliver the necessary services and skills to their patients remains a seminal objective of training programs. Defining surgical competence, the measures used to assess and quantify that competence, and the criteria used to judge whether it has been achieved are critical issues. The bar that surgical residency programs have established is, and must continue to be, set very high. Definitions of competency differ across disciplines. In education

Minds matter: Gaps in the psychosocial support of advanced practice nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Advanced Practice Nursing students (APRN students) face many stressors personally, professionally, and academically while pursuing a graduate nursing degree. These negative events result in greater than 50% of the students considering withdrawing from the program. Despite the growing global demand for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), this student population remains among the least studied. PURPOSE: The author aimed to discover strategies to support the self-care, well-being, and resilience of graduate nursing students to increase academic retention. METHODS: The autho

[A specialty that deals with breast cancer. Breast pathology hospital units].

Breast cancer has become a veritable "plague" on Western European civilization to the point where one in ten women will likely develop a mammary gland neoplasia in the future. From a medical and health policy perspective, we must be prepared to deal with this problem. Undergraduate and post-graduate education of professionals and the creation of specific units are some of the solutions for fighting this epidemic.

Labor market entry prospects of people with visual impairments: evidence from administrative register data in the Netherlands.

The UN's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities includes a right to equal work opportunities. People with visual impairments (VI) are targeted by this convention and experience low employment rates. The initial transition from education to labor is a predictor for later labor market participation. Exploiting administrative register data, we identified a graduated subpopulation with VI and matched them to a control group. This paper evaluates (1) group differences in various socio-economic outcomes following graduation, and (2) following initial employment. Following graduation t
