BACKGROUND: Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are commonly prescribed medications for depression, anxiety, and other comorbid psychiatric conditions. However, these medications can have off-target effects, such as lowering platelet serotonin levels and reducing the ability of platelets to aggregate, which may lead to higher rates of post-operative bleeding. The aim of this paper was to determine if SSRIs/SNRIs increase the risk of post-operative hematoma formation following traumatic elbow surgery.
METHODS: Adult patient

BACKGROUND: Management of the coronoid fracture in terrible triad injuries (TTI) of the elbow remains controversial. We compared outcomes of TTI patients with versus without coronoid fixation.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 105 TTI patients; 59 patients with no fixation (group 1) and 46 patients with coronoid fixation (group 2). Complications, revisions, range of motion (ROM) and functional scores (Mayo Elbow Performance Score [MEPS], Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand [QuickDASH], Subjective Elbow Score [SES]) were assessed. Stratified analyses using t-tests and Fisher's

CASE: A 9-year-old boy presented with a severe median nerve palsy 6 months after a simple elbow dislocation. Neurotmesis was confirmed on surgical exploration, and it was repaired primarily in elbow flexion with the arm casted postoperatively. At 1-year follow-up from surgery, the patient reported near normal sensory improvement with motor deficits that did not affect his full return to activities.
CONCLUSION: The median nerve neurotmesis after elbow dislocation without an associated fracture is rare. This case highlights the importance of careful neurologic examination in children sustaining

This study investigated the biomechanical behavior of four different screw configurations used to fix comminuted proximal ulna fractures with a locking compression plate (LCP), via a detailed finite element model based on realistic anatomical geometry. The model incorporated realistic anatomical geometry including both cortical and cancellous bone, soft tissue constraints, and loading conditions representing the physiological self-weight of the forearm, with the humerus fixed at its proximal end. The stress distribution on the plate, strain intensity within the bone tissue, and interfragmentar

Lateral condylar (LC) and olecranon (OC) fractures occurring concurrently on one side are rare phenomena with limited scientific literature. Our study aims to evaluate the radiologic, clinical, and functional consequences of lateral to medial injury of the elbow (LAMEINE) in pediatric patients, simultaneously comparing with lateral to medial diagonal injury of the elbow (MELAINE). Eighteen males and 10 females were diagnosed with LAMEINE. The average age at the time of injury was 3.8 ± 2.3 years (range, 1-9). Out of the 28 fractures, 19 (67.9%) occurred on the left side and nine (32.1%) on the

Postoperative wound infections (PWIs) following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for elbow fractures can significantly affect patient outcomes. Identifying associated risk factors is crucial for improving clinical practices and patient care. A retrospective analysis (June 2020-June 2023) at our institution involved 90 patients who underwent elbow ORIF. Thirty patients developed PWIs (case group), compared to 60 who did not (control group). Variables like anaemia, operation duration, hospital stay, blood loss, body mass index (BMI), age, hypoalbuminemia, smoking status, diabetes mell…

BACKGROUND: Coronoid fractures are often part of a complex fracture-dislocation of the elbow. For an optimum prognosis, it is important to understand the characteristics of coronoid fractures in different elbow injury patterns. Significant differences in these characteristics have been observed in various studies, but these previous studies have suffered from limitations, such as insufficient quantification and unknown prognostic differences among different injury patterns. Therefore, we aimed to quantitatively analyze coronoid fracture characteristics and functional outcomes in different elbo

We present the case of a child who had a posterior-lateral elbow dislocation with an intact ulnar nerve documented before an attempted reduction, with subsequent loss of ulnar nerve function after the elbow was reduced.Dislocations of the elbow in children represent only 3% to 6% of all elbow injuries. Posterior elbow dislocations are the most common, with more than one half involving an associated fracture about the elbow. The most common associated fracture is the medial epicondyle. Even though it is known that injury to the ulnar nerve can occur in elbow dislocations, we found only 1 other

Treatment of complex distal humeral fractures in older patients with osteopenic bone remains a major surgical challenge. We report the results of 11 patients over 75 years of age who underwent semiconstrained sloppy-hinge total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) due to comminuted intraarticular fractures of the distal humerus. There were 9 women and 2 men with a mean age of 79.6 years. The mean duration of follow up was 2.8 years. According to AO classification, there were 8 type C3 and 3 type C2 fractures. The mean time from injury to operation was 4.3 days and the mean length of hospital stay was 9.8

Osteotomy of the olecranon is commonly used to gain exposure for reconstruction of bi-condylar fractures of the distal humerus (type 13-C of classification AO), but there is controversy because of the considerable complications inherent in this technique. The aim of our study is to examine the anatomical and functional consequences of this technique of exposure on the elbow. This is a retrospective study over a continuous 7-year period. We confined ourselves to patients more than 15 years old who had presented with a bi-condylar fracture (type C of the AO) of the distal humerus, internally fix

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of a protocol for the treatment of fracture-dislocations of the elbow based on the concept that, if dislocation of the elbow with associated fractures can be made to resemble a simple elbow dislocation by repairing or reconstructing the fractured structures, repair of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) will not be necessary.
METHODS: Over a 5-year period, a single surgeon operated on 34 patients with a posterior dislocation of the elbow associated with one or more intra-articular fractures. The mean age of these 19 men and 15 women was 48 years. Assoc

In this report, we describe an extremely unusual Monteggia equivalent type 1 lesion in a 10-year-old boy following a fall from a height of 1 m. On the plain radiographs, our patient had a particular Monteggia equivalent type 1 injury associating a posterior elbow dislocation with diaphyseal radius and ulna fractures. The patient was treated by closed reduction technique. At six months of follow-up, the fractures were consolidated and the elbow was stable. To our knowledge, only 8 adult cases and one paediatric observation with similar lesions had been reported through medical literature. There
