Across the animal kingdom, neural responses in the auditory cortex are suppressed during vocalization, and humans are no exception. A common hypothesis is that suppression increases sensitivity to auditory feedback, enabling the detection of vocalization errors. This hypothesis has been previously confirmed in non-human primates, however a direct link between auditory suppression and sensitivity in human speech monitoring remains elusive. To address this issue, we obtained intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recordings from 35 neurosurgical participants during speech production. We firs

How we combine minimal linguistic units into larger structures remains an unresolved topic in neuroscience. Language processing involves the abstract construction of 'vertical' and 'horizontal' information simultaneously (e.g., phrase structure, morphological agreement), but previous paradigms have been constrained in isolating only one type of composition and have utilized poor spatiotemporal resolution. Using intracranial recordings, we report multiple experiments designed to separate phrase structure from morphosyntactic agreement. Epilepsy patients (n = 10) were presented with auditory two

Cooperative interactions profoundly shape individual and collective behaviors of social animals. Successful cooperation requires coordinated efforts by cooperators toward collective goals. However, the underlying behavioral dynamics and neuronal mechanisms within and between cooperating brains remain largely unknown. We recorded intracranial electrophysiological signals from human pairs engaged in a cooperation game. We show that teammate coordination and goal pursuit make distinct contributions to the behavioral cooperation dynamics. Increases and decreases in high-gamma activity in the tempo

Sleep is punctuated by transient elevations of vigilance level called arousals or awakenings depending on their durations. Understanding the dynamics of brain activity modifications during these transitional phases could help to better understand the changes in cognitive functions according to vigilance states. In this study, we investigated the activity of memory-related areas (hippocampus and orbitofrontal cortex) during short (3 s to 2 min) arousing reactions detected from thalamic activity, using intracranial recordings in four drug-resistant epilepsy patients. The average power of the sig

OBJECTIVE: The articulatory loop is a fundamental component of language function, involved in the short-term buffer of auditory information followed by its vocal reproduction. We characterized the network dynamics of the human articulatory loop, using invasive recording and stimulation.
METHODS: We measured high-gamma activity70-110 Hz recorded intracranially when patients with epilepsy either only listened to, or listened to and then reproduced two successive tones by humming. We also conducted network analyses, and analyzed behavioral responses to cortical stimulation.
RESULTS: Presentatio

The basal ganglia, a network of subcortical structures, play a critical role in movements, sleep and mental behavior. Basal ganglia disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease affect sleep. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease can ameliorate sleep disturbances. Our series of previous studies lead the hypothesis that dopamine, acting on D2 receptors on the striatopallidal terminals, enhances activity in the globus pallidus externa (GPe) and promotes sleep. Here, we tested if DBS in the GPe promotes sleep in rats. We found that unilateral

OBJECTIVE: Ictal tachycardia (IT) is common and may pave the way towards cardiac conditions with high risk potential. However, the mechanisms of IT remain obscure and therefore difficult to control. For example, whereas IT is associated with a sympathetic surge, it is unclear why the IT effects are not opposed by baroreflex cardiac inhibition during seizures. As the vagus nerves (VN) are main mediators for such baroreflexes, this study was performed to investigate the VN activity in IT.
METHODS: The present experiments were performed in ten pigs where IT seizures were induced by controlled in

Resective epilepsy surgery can improve seizures when the epileptogenic zone (EZ) is limited to a well-defined region. High frequency oscillations (HFO) have been recognized as having a high association with the seizure onset zone. Therefore, we retrospectively identified ictal HFOs and determined their relationship to specific intracranial features of cortical tubers in children with TSC who underwent resective surgery. We identified 14 patients with drug resistant epilepsy secondary to TSC who underwent subdural grid and strip implantation for presurgical evaluation and subsequent resection w

BACKGROUND: Multiple hippocampal transection (MHT) is a surgical technique used for the treatment of drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy in situations where standard procedures would pose a high risk for memory deterioration. During MHT, the longitudinal fibers of the hippocampus, implicated in epilepsy spreading, are interrupted, while the transverse memory circuits are spared. The extent of MHT is governed by intraoperative electrocorticography; abolition of epileptic discharges serves as an end point to terminate the transection. In other words, the aim of MHT is not the anatomical…

Developmental dyslexia is typically associated with difficulties in basic auditory processing and in manipulating speech sounds. However, the neuroanatomical correlates of auditory difficulties in developmental dyslexia (DD) and their contribution to individual clinical phenotypes are still unknown. Recent intracranial electrocorticography findings associated processing of sound amplitude rises and speech sounds with posterior and middle superior temporal gyrus (STG), respectively. We hypothesize that regional STG anatomy will relate to specific auditory abilities in DD, and that auditory proc…

Dravet syndrome (Dravet) is a rare and severe form of developmental epileptic encephalopathy. Compared to wild-type mice, background ECoG activity in DS mice had lower power and reduced phase coherence, which was not corrected by any of the tested ASMs. However, acute administration of Drav …

OBJECTIVE: Electrocorticography (ECoG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems have the potential to improve quality of life of people with locked-in syndrome (LIS) by restoring their ability to communicate independently. Before implantation of such a system, it is important to localize ECoG electrode target regions. Here, we assessed the predictive value of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for the localization of suitable target regions on the sensorimotor cortex for ECoG-based BCI in people with locked-in syndrome.
METHODS: Three people with locked-in syndrome were implante…
