The present study examines the histopathological effects of long-term intracochlear electrical stimulation in young normal hearing animals. Eight-week old kittens were implanted with scala tympani electrode arrays and stimulated for periods of up to 1500 h using charge balanced biphasic current pulses at charge densities in the range 21-52 microC cm-2 geom. per phase. Both click and electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses were periodically recorded to monitor the status of the hair cell and spiral ganglion cell populations. In addition, the impedance of the stimulating electrodes was

689 long-term electroencephalographic recordings from 88 rats with chronically implanted electrodes were evaluated with reference to the onset and development of rhythmic spike episodes of 8-9 Hz frequency characteristic of quiet wakefulness. Episodes occurred in the recordings of 88% of the test animals. Recordings completely devoid of episodes came from selected rats highly sensitive to an acoustic epileptogenic stimulus and from 50% of rats of a Wistar-Velaz barrier breed. These two groups differed from the other animals in respect of their greater aggressiveness and restlessness in the chr

Introduction: Cochlear implant is a hearing enhancement device that directly stimulates nerve cells with electrical impulses. The optimal placement of the implanted electrode array is crucial for device wearers. Numerous domestic and international studies have confirmed a significant correlation between the quality of restored electrical hearing after surgery. During optimal implantation, electrodes are placed as close as possible to the spiral ganglion cells, allowing for more focused stimulation to improve speech perception and speech intelligibility. Objective: Our aim is to investigate the

INTRODUCTION: Meniere's disease (MD) is characterised by fluctuating hearing loss. When hearing loss is severe or profound, rehabilitation requires cochlear implantation. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare cochlear implant (CI) fittings and electrode impedances between patients implanted because of MD and those with other aetiologies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved patients who received cochlear implantation with MED-EL CI at our centre between 2005 and 2022. We first compared speech recognition in a quiet environment at one year after cochlear implantation. We the

Cochlear implants (CI) are the treatment of choice in profoundly deaf patients. Measuring the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) has become an important tool for verifying the function of the spiral ganglion neurons (SGN), which are the target cells of the CI stimulation. ECAP measurement is only possible after electrode insertion. No information about the neuronal health status is available before cochlear implantation. We investigated possible correlations between the ECAP amplitude growth function (AGF) slope and anamnestic parameters to identify possible predictors for SG

An automatic cardioverter-defibrillator could be implanted using an endocardial defibrillation lead system (consisting of a tripolar defibrillation electrode catheter in conjunction with an epicostal patch electrode) in 9 of 10 patients with sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Six lead system complications were observed during a follow-up period of 51 +/- 36 weeks. Three catheter electrode conductor fractures occurred and manifested as oversensing and subsequent delivery of inappropriate shocks (1 patient), inability to defibrillate during electrophysiologic testing

Pacemaker treatment is more complicated in children than in adults, mainly because of electrode problems. A pacemaker system was implanted in 23 children aged 2 days-14 years (mean 4.8 years, with 11 less than or equal to 3 years) at the Karolinska Hospital since 1983. The indications for pacing were peroperative atrioventricular block (AVB) in 13 cases, congenital AVB in five, sinoatrial disorder in four and slow ventricular arrhythmia in one case. The initially implanted electrode was epicardial in ten children (in the first 2 years of the study) and endocardial in the other 13. Eight of the

Electrical stimulation of the muscle has been proven efficacious in preventing atrophy and/or reanimating paralyzed muscles. Intramuscular electrodes made from metals have significantly higher Young's Moduli than the muscle tissues, which has the potential to cause chronic inflammation and decrease device performance. Here, we present an intramuscular electrode made from an elastomeric conducting polymer composite consisting of PEDOT-PEG copolymer, silicone and carbon nanotubes (CNT) with fluorosilicone insulation. The electrode wire has a Young's modulus of 804 (±99) kPa, which better mimics

BACKGROUND: The success of cochlear implantation may be further improved by minimizing implantation trauma. The physical trauma of implantation and subsequent immunological sequelae can affect residual hearing and the viability of the spiral ganglion. An ideal electrode should therefore decrease post-implantation trauma and provide support to the residual spiral ganglion population. Combining a flexible electrode with cells producing and releasing protective factors could present a potential means to achieve this. Mononuclear cells obtained from bone marrow (BM-MNC) consist of mesenchymal and

Obstruction that occurs within the scala tympani (after meningitis or otosclerosis) has been considered a contraindication for placement of a multichannel cochlear implant electrode. Two patients who exhibited radiographic evidence of intracochlear narrowing and obliteration were implanted with multichannel electrodes. Implantation involved creation of a channel for the electrode to wrap around the modiolus. The middle ear cavity and the external auditory canal also had to be removed to gain access. The response of one of the patients was similar to that of patients with normal cochlear anatom

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is considered an efficient and safe method of treating intractable chronic pain from various origins such as persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The complications related to SCS therapy are usually classified as mechanical or biological. Myelopathy related to dense scar tissue formation around epidural paddle electrodes implanted for SCS therapy is extremely rarely reported. We have studied all reported cases of surgical management of this complication and we sought to find predisposing factors responsible

This brief review provides an overview of neurotherapeutic interventions for major depression that are available currently or are being studied in clinical trials. The growing utility of surgical and device-related treatments for psychiatric conditions may represent a sea change in the field of psychiatry comparable to that seen in other clinical disciplines. For example, for many years the overwhelming majority of cardiac conditions were treated with medications and behavioral interventions. With the advent of cardiac surgical procedures such as ablation and cardiac bypass surgery and the use

OBJECTIVE: The implantation of biohybrid electrodes was introduced a few years ago in our clinic. These electrodes coated with autologous mononuclear cells releasing anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective factors are thought to reduce insertion trauma and maintain the vitality of surviving spiral ganglion neurons. The clinical feasibility of this approach has already been demonstrated. In the present retrospective study, the four-year results of the two sides (classical electrode and biohybrid electrode) in the bilaterally implanted patients were compared in order to investigate possible advers

As precursors of permanent pacemakers, Lidwill (1929) and Hyman (1932) introduced temporary pacemakers for resuscitation. Callaghan (1950) intravenously paced the sinus nodal region for bradycardia in hypothermic dogs. Zoll (1952) used external electrodes to treat Adams-Stokes attacks, and Lillehei (1957) fixed stainless steel electrodes to the myocardium, successfully treating iatrogenic total atrioventricular block with a percutaneous pacemaker. Since 1951, by experimental and clinical use of ventricular fibrillation to obtain a functional cardiac standstill during open heart surgery, we use

OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) revision surgery remains common, with a negative impact on cost-effectiveness and outcomes. The primary goal of this report was to retrospectively study the need for revision surgery in a cohort of complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS-1) patients with newly implanted cervical surgical paddle leads, focusing on a method of implantation to reduce the need for revision surgery.
METHODS: Fifteen patients underwent implantation of paddle SCS leads in the cervical spine with cervical laminotomies under conscious sedation for CRPS-1 from 2008 to 2012.

AIMS: Young children suffering from congenital or post-operative AV-block require life-long pacemaker stimulation. Due to the anatomical prerequisites initially epicardial electrodes are implanted and the generator is placed in the upper abdominal wall. The following study investigated modes of failure leading to reoperation in this group of technically challenging patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Between October 2000 and May 2005, a total of 21 infants (age 3 days to 5 years) underwent pacemaker implantation using a subxyphoidal incision for newborns (and a partial lower or complete median ste

HYPOTHESIS: A cochlear implant electrode within the cochlea contributes to the air-bone gap (ABG) component of postoperative changes in residual hearing after electrode insertion.
BACKGROUND: Preservation of residual hearing after cochlear implantation has gained importance as simultaneous electric-acoustic stimulation allows for improved speech outcomes. Postoperative loss of residual hearing has previously been attributed to sensorineural changes; however, presence of increased postoperative ABG remains unexplained and could result in part from altered cochlear mechanics. Here, we sought to
