Electroencephalography Oscillations During Prehypnosis and Hypnosis in Subjects With High and Low Dissociative Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Hypnosis is a multifaceted phenomenon that refers to suggestions for creating desirable behavior, experience, and physiological changes. Most electroencephalographic (EEG) research in hypnosis has allocated people into two groups of high and low hypnotizables. Hence, the empirical data are somewhat controversial, and there is no general agreement about the neurophysiology of hypnosis. On the other hand, the dissociation theory of hypnosis posits that people candidates for hypnosis are typically prone to dissociation, and individuals divide into two groups: High dissociative (HD)

Comparison of Continuous Intracortical and Scalp Electroencephalography in Comatose Patients with Acute Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Depth electroencephalography (dEEG) is a recent invasive monitoring technique used in patients with acute brain injury. This study aimed to describe in detail the clinical manifestations of nonconvulsive seizures (NCSzs) with and without a surface EEG correlate, analyze their long-standing effects, and provide data that contribute to understanding the significance of certain scalp EEG patterns observed in critically ill patients. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled a cohort of 33 adults with severe acute brain injury admitted to the neurological intensive care unit. All of them und…

Can electroencephalography (EEG) identify the different dimensions of pain in fibromyalgia? A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising tool for identifying the physiological biomarkers of fibromyalgia (FM). Evidence suggests differences in power band and density between individuals with FM and healthy controls. EEG changes appear to be associated with pain intensity; however, their relationship with the quality of pain has not been examined. We aimed to investigate whether abnormal EEG in the frontal and central points of the 10-20 EEG system in individuals with FM is associated with pain's sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational dimensions. The association bet…

The effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on electroencephalography microstates of patients with heroin-addiction.

The effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation in treating substance use disorders are gaining attention; however, most existing studies used subjective measures to examine the treatment effects. Objective electroencephalography (EEG)-based microstate analysis is important for measuring the efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with heroin addiction. We investigated dynamic brain activity changes in individuals with heroin addiction after transcranial magnetic stimulation using microstate indicators. Thirty-two patients received intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS)…

Electroencephalography of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder in a dog with generalized tetanus.

CASE SUMMARY: A 3-month-old Airedale dog with clinically diagnosed generalized tetanus was investigated for the occurrence of excessive paddling and chewing movements when sleeping. Electroencephalogram (EEG) with time-locked video over 31 hours determined occurrence of the abnormal movements to be within 20 to 180 seconds of the onset of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, but not at any other stage of wakefulness or sleep. No epileptiform activity was noted. Clinical signs of generalized tetanus resolved over 8 weeks with antimicrobial and symptomatic treatment, and sleep-associated movements re

The Potential Application of Multiscale Entropy Analysis of Electroencephalography in Children with Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is frequently used in functional neurological assessment of children with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Multiscale entropy (MSE) can reveal complexity in both short and long time scales and is more feasible in the analysis of EEG. Entropy-based estimation of EEG complexity is a powerful tool in investigating the underlying disturbances of neural networks of the brain. Most neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders in childhood affect the early stage of brain development. The analysis of EEG complexity may show the influences of different neurologic…

Importance of diazepam administration during electroencephalography in the differential diagnosis of cortical visual loss.

A 14-year-old boy presented with acute visual loss due to cortical blindness. Two weeks after the visual symptoms, the patient developed behavioral abnormalities. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed hyperintense lesions at parieto-occipital lobes on T2-weighted and fluid attenuated inversion recovery images. Sleep and awake electroencephalography (EEG) were normal, but diazepam administration revealed bilateral periodic synchronous complexes occurring every 20 to 30 seconds. Elevated measles antibody titers in cerebrospinal fluid confirmed the diagnosis of subacute sclerosing panen…

Combination of neonatal electroencephalography and ultrasonography: sensitive means of early diagnosis of periventricular leukomalacia.

This study was performed to assess the predictive value of ultrasonography and electroencephalography (EEG) in order to identify infants with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) during the early neonatal period, especially non-cystic cases, and to clarify the combination of ultrasonographic and EEG findings that are the most useful. We studied 288 eligible infants, whose gestational ages ranged between 27 and 32 weeks. PVL was observed in 49 infants (26 cystic PVL and 23 non-cystic PVL). On ultrasonography, 31 infants with PVL were detected on the basis of definite periventricular echodensity (…

Depth electroencephalography in selection of refractory epilepsy for surgery. Our experience with the suboccipital approach.

Despite new diagnostic tools, the precise localisation of an epileptic focal discharge remains an important step in the surgical treatment of epilepsy. Conventional EEG not always gives enough information to decide about surgery and more invasive methods have to be used. Epidural, subdural, and intra-parenchymatous electrodes have been used to come closer to the epileptic foci. Superficial hemispheric foci are well recorded by conventional epidural or subdural, strip or grid electrodes. Deeper foci, located in the medial temporal lobe or limbic areas are much more difficult to access from surf

Protocol for chronic electroencephalography, fiber photometry, and silicon probe recordings in the Syrian hamster.

The Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) exhibits a unique metabolic physiology, including the ability to enter hypometabolic states. While this species represents a powerful model for studying the neuronal basis of metabolic control and brain-state transitions, its use is limited due to the lack of detailed protocols for chronic neuronal measurements. Here, we present a step-by-step protocol for chronic surgical implantation and multimodal neuronal recordings in Syrian hamsters. We describe steps for electroencephalography (EEG), fiber photometry, and multi-channel silicon probe recordings.

Electroencephalography as a biomarker of brain function in domestic ruminants: a systematic review and critical appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalography (EEG) has been extensively used to investigate cortical activity in ruminants under physiological, pathological, and experimental conditions. Its applications range from the assessment of consciousness and nociception to experimental models of hypoxia-ischemia, neurodevelopment, pain, anesthesia, and neurological disorders. However, considerable methodological heterogeneity has limited the integration and critical interpretation of findings across studies. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the use of EEG as a biomarker of brain function in …
