Is there a role of pulsed electromagnetic fields in management of patellofemoral pain syndrome? Randomized controlled study at one year follow-up.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common cause of recurrent or chronic knee pain in young adults, generally located in the retropatellar region. Etiology is controversial and includes several factors, such as anatomical defects, muscular imbalance, or joint overuse. Good results have been reported with exercise therapy, including home exercise program (HEP). Joint inflammation with increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines levels in the synovial fluid might be seen especially when chondromalacia becomes evident. Biophysical stimulation with pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) has shown a…

Treatment with AC pulsed electromagnetic fields normalizes the latency of the visual evoked response in a multiple sclerosis patient with optic atrophy.

Visual evoked response (VER) studies have been utilized as supportive information for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and may be useful in objectively monitoring the effects of various therapeutic modalities. Delayed latency of the VER, which reflects slowed impulse transmission in the optic pathways, is the most characteristic abnormality associated with the disease. Brief transcranial applications of AC pulsed electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in the picotesla flux density are efficacious in the symptomatic treatment of MS and may also reestablish impulse transmission in the optic pathw…

Effects of Calcium-Regulating Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Plus Respiratory Muscle Training on Poststroke Respiratory Dysfunction: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is frequently accompanied by respiratory dysfunction, which limits ventilatory reserve and may hinder functional recovery. Respiratory muscle training (RMT) can improve selected ventilatory indices, but overall benefits remain modest. This pilot trial aimed to evaluate the clinical effects of calcium-regulating pulsed electromagnetic fields (Ca-R-PEMF) combined with RMT on poststroke respiratory function. METHODS: This single-center, prospective, double-blind pilot trial was conducted at Yongsen Hospital of China Medical University, China, from July to December 2025. Thirty…

Effects of man-made electromagnetic fields on heart rate variability parameters of general public: a systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental studies.

OBJECTIVES: The effects of man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on the cardiovascular system have been investigated in many studies. In this regard, the cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity due to EMFs exposure, assessed by heart rate variability (HRV), was targeted in some studies. The studies investigating the relationship between EMFs and HRV have yielded conflicting results. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the data's consistency and identify the association between EMFs and HRV measures. CONTENT: Published literature from four electronic databases…

Tumour-specific amplitude-modulated radiofrequency electromagnetic fields induce differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma via targeting Cav3.2 T-type voltage-gated calcium channels and Ca2+ influx.

BACKGROUND: Administration of amplitude modulated 27·12 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (AM RF EMF) by means of a spoon-shaped applicator placed on the patient's tongue is a newly approved treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The mechanism of action of tumour-specific AM RF EMF is largely unknown. METHODS: Whole body and organ-specific human dosimetry analyses were performed. Mice carrying human HCC xenografts were exposed to AM RF EMF using a small animal AM RF EMF exposure system replicating human dosimetry and exposure time. We performed histological analysis of…

CT scan-evaluated outcome of pulsed electromagnetic fields in the treatment of acute scaphoid fractures: a randomised, multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

We hypothesised that the use of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) bone growth stimulation in acute scaphoid fractures would significantly shorten the time to union and reduce the number of nonunions in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre trial. A total of 102 patients (78 male, 24 female; mean age 35 years (18 to 77)) from five different medical centres with a unilateral undisplaced acute scaphoid fracture were randomly allocated to PEMF (n = 51) or placebo (n = 51) and assessed with regard to functional and radiological outcomes (multiplanar reconstructed CT scans) at

Electromagnetic field induced activation of amyloid-β degrading enzyme, neprilysin, for accelerated Alzheimer's disease therapy.

BackgroundAmyloid-β accumulation and misfolding are key features of Alzheimer's disease (AD), contributing to synaptic dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and neuronal loss. Normally, amyloid-β is cleared by chaperone-assisted folding, enzymes such as neprilysin and insulin-degrading enzyme, and autophagy pathways. In AD, these mechanisms become impaired, leading to toxic aggregation. Enhancing the activity of endogenous degrading enzymes offers a promising therapeutic approach, with electromagnetic (EM) fields emerging as a potential noninvasive method to promote amyloid-β clearance.ObjectiveThis

L arginine and radiofrequency electromagnetic field attenuate inflammatory and apoptotic injury after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) triggers intense neuroinflammatory and apoptotic cascades that contribute to secondary brain injury, delayed cerebral ischemia, and poor neurological outcomes. Inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) amplify oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction, whereas suppression of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)/endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway impairs hypoxic adaptation and neuronal survival. L-arginine (L-ARG), a nitric oxide p

Pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation subtly modulates doxorubicin sensitivity in a spheroid co-culture model of osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is a rare but aggressive bone cancer primarily affecting children and adolescents. Current treatment options are limited by toxicity and reduced efficacy in advanced stages. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation has shown promise as a non-invasive anticancer strategy, though inconsistent experimental models and exposure protocols limit translational progress. In the present study, a co-culture spheroid model of osteosarcoma was optimized using human osteosarcoma U2OS cells and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) and used to investigate whether PEMF exposu

Pulse Electromagnetic Field for Treating Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a type of chronic disease with high morbidity and high economic burden. Due to the adverse effects of long-term drug therapy, physical therapy, such as pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF), is widely implemented in clinical practice. Therefore, we first conducted the meta-analysis on the efficacy and safety of PEMF in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. We searched eight databases to acquire potentially eligible studies. Outcome indicators include bone mineral density (BMD), visual analogue scale (VAS), biochemical markers of alkaline phosphatase (ALP),…

Exposure to high-frequency electromagnetic field triggers rapid uptake of large nanosphere clusters by pheochromocytoma cells.

BACKGROUND: Effects of man-made electromagnetic fields (EMF) on living organisms potentially include transient and permanent changes in cell behaviour, physiology and morphology. At present, these EMF-induced effects are poorly defined, yet their understanding may provide important insights into consequences of uncontrolled (e.g., environmental) as well as intentional (e.g., therapeutic or diagnostic) exposure of biota to EMFs. In this work, for the first time, we study mechanisms by which a high frequency (18 GHz) EMF radiation affects the physiology of membrane transport in pheochromocytoma …

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy improves tendon-to-bone healing in a rat rotator cuff repair model.

Rotator cuff tears are common musculoskeletal injuries often requiring surgical intervention with high failure rates. Currently, pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) are used for treatment of long-bone fracture and lumbar and cervical spine fusion surgery. Clinical studies examining the effects of PEMF on soft tissue healing show promising results. Therefore, we investigated the role of PEMF on rotator cuff healing using a rat rotator cuff repair model. We hypothesized that PEMF exposure following rotator cuff repair would improve tendon mechanical properties, tissue morphology, and alter in …

Pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation for acute tibial shaft fractures: a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Tibial shaft fractures are sometimes complicated by delayed union and nonunion, necessitating further surgical interventions. Pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation is an effective treatment for delayed unions and nonunions, but its efficacy in preventing healing complications in patients with acute fractures is largely untested. The purpose of this pragmatic trial was to determine whether adjuvant pulsed electromagnetic field therapy for acute tibial shaft fractures reduces the rate of surgical revision because of delayed union or nonunion. METHODS: In a double-blind randomized

The effects of an electromagnetic field on the boundary tissue of the seminiferous tubules of the rat: A light and transmission electron microscope study.

Human beings are unavoidably exposed to ambient electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated from various electrical devices and from power transmission lines. Controversy exists about the effects of EMF on various organs. One of the critical issues is that EMF may adversely affect the reproductive system. In order to examine this 30 rat pups were exposed to 50 Hz EMF (non-ionising radiation) during in utero development (approximately 3 weeks) and postnatal life (5 weeks). Groups of exposed rats were subsequently left in an environment free of EMF in order to observe recovery, if any, from the chang…

Interactive effect of chemical substances and occupational electromagnetic field exposure on the risk of gliomas and meningiomas in Swedish men.

The objective of our study was to investigate the possible interactive effect of occupational exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELFMF) and to known or suspected carcinogenic chemicals on the incidence of the two main histological types of brain cancer, gliomas and meningiomas, in a cohort of male Swedish workers. The historical cohort of all Swedish men gainfully employed in 1970 were followed 19 years (1971-1989). Exposure to ELFMF and to nine chemicals were assessed using two Swedish job exposure matrices based on occupational codes and industrial activity. Relative risks a
