Effect of Repetitive Head Impacts on Saccade Performance in Canadian University Football Players.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the effect of cumulative head impacts on saccade latency and errors, measured across two successive football seasons. DESIGN: Participants were acquired from a sample of convenience-one Canadian university football team. Head impacts were collected during training camp, practices, eight regular season games, and four playoff games in each season. Saccade measurements were collected at five time points-before and after training camp, at midseason, after regular season, and after playoffs. SETTING: Two seasons following players from a single USports football team during

How to Evaluate a Diagnostic Sleep Study Report.

There is more information on a sleep study report than just the Apnea-Hypopnea Index or Respiratory Disturbance Index. This article explains how to evaluate any sleep study report to get the most information out of it. Maximum information allows the optimal treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea and some other sleep disorders.

Clinical applications of correlational vestibular autorotation test.

CONCLUSION: The correlational vestibular autorotation test (VAT) system has the advantages of good test-retest reliability and calibrations of absolute degrees of eye movement are unnecessary when acquiring a cross correlation coefficient (CCC). The approach is able to efficiently detect peripheral vestibulopathies. OBJECTIVE: A VAT has some drawbacks including poor test-retest reliability and slippage of sensor. This study aimed to develop a correlational VAT system and to evaluate the reliability and applicability of this system. METHODS: Twenty healthy participants and 10 vertiginous pati

The effect of pseudophakia on retinal and cortical functions.

AIM: To investigate the effect of pseudophakia on visual electrophysiology. METHODS: Right eyes of 60 pseudophakic (study group) age- and sex-matched 60 phakic (control group) volunteers were included. Subjects without any ocular and systemic disease, who had visual acuity of more than 9/10 underwent full-field electroretinogram (ERG), pattern electroretinogram (PERG), pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) and electro-oculogram (EOG) recordings. RESULTS: The P100 latency to 1º-check was significantly shorter in both pseudophakic groups (study group: 102.98 ± 6.11, control group: 107.06 ± 1

Current visual scanpath research: a review of investigations into the psychotic, anxiety, and mood disorders.

The human visual system is comprised of an array of complex organs, which jointly decode information from visible light to construct a meaningful representation of the surrounding environment. The study of visual scanpaths transpired in a bid to enhance our understanding of the role of eye movements underpinning adaptive functioning as well as psychopathology and was further aided by the advent of modern eye-tracking techniques. This review provides a background to the nature of visual scanpaths, followed by an overview and critique of eye movement studies in specific clinical populations invo

Cervico-ocular coordination during neck rotation is distorted in people with whiplash-associated disorders.

People with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) not only suffer from neck/head pain, but commonly report deficits in eye movement control. Recent work has highlighted a strong relationship between eye and neck muscle activation in pain-free subjects. It is possible that WAD may disrupt the intricate coordination between eye and neck movement. Electromyographic activity (EMG) of muscles that rotate the cervical spine to the right (left sternocleidomastoid, right obliquus capitis inferior (OI), right splenius capitis (SC) and right multifidus (MF)) was recorded in nine people with chronic WAD. C

Infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis: the first reported case in Japan diagnosed by palmitoyl-protein thioesterase enzyme activity deficiency.

We herein report on a Japanese boy with infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL). He was born of incest to a girl and her maternal uncle. His development was normal at 12 months, and began to display regression at 14 months. He lost his social smile and tracking eye movement at 16 months, and could not stand and developed severe hypotonic tetraplegia at 19 months. Myoclonic movement was observed in his trunk, eye and extremities. His height, body weight and head circumstance had been normal. Both MRI and CT scans of his head showed severe cerebral, cerebellar and brainstem atrophy. The

Principal component analysis for reduction of ocular artefacts in event-related potentials of normal and dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to reduce ocular artefacts in single trial event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded in normal and in dyslexic children. METHODS: ERPs were recorded during passive and active reading of centrally presented alphabetic letters and non alphabetic symbols. EEG was recorded from 10 EEG locations using the 10-20 system. Diagonal EOG from the right eye was also recorded. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied in order to reduce ocular artefacts: the first or the second principal component (PC) was subtracted when the correlation coefficient between the com

Exploring the nature of switch cost: inferences from P300 and the lateralized readiness potentials.

We describe a protocol to examine various hypothetical models of task switching. This protocol analyzes two event-related potentials--lateralized readiness potential (LRP) and P300--to infer the roles of advance reconfiguration and carry-over effect on task switching. Participants performed two tasks in a random order. On each trial a task from the previous trial would be repeated, or the other task would be carried out. In one scenario, each stimulus was preceded either by an informative cue specifying which of the two tasks to perform (task-cueing conditions) or by a non-informative cue (no

Visual field constriction and electrophysiological changes associated with vigabatrin.

PURPOSE: We investigated functional, morphological and electrophysiological changes in patients under anti-epileptic therapy with vigabatrin (VGB), a GABA aminotransferase inhibitor. METHODS: 20 epileptic patients treated with vigabatrin (age range 25-66 years) were enrolled in this study. The referrals were made by the treating neurologist, based on suspected or known visual field changes in these patients. Two patients had vigabatrin monotherapy, 18 patients were treated with vigabatrin in combination with other antiepileptic drugs. None of the patients reported visual complaints. Patients

Long-term facilitation of ventilation in humans during NREM sleep.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether episodic hypoxic exposure would elicit long term facilitation (LTF) of ventilation (V(I)) in sleeping humans. Twenty subjects gave written informed consent. Of these, six subjects were unable to maintain stable stage 2 sleep or deeper for a majority of the experiment and their data were excluded from the analysis. On night 1 after subjects had reached stable sleep (stage 2 or deeper), the subjects breathed room air for 5 minutes, followed by 3 minutes of hypoxia (F(I)O2 = 8%). This sequence was repeated 10 times, and the breathing pattern was

Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa: clinical and electrophysiological report of four cases.

Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa (URP) is a rare tapetoretinal dystrophy affecting only one eye. The François and Verriest criteria are necessary to make a correct diagnosis of URP: exclude all infective etiologies, check that the clinical signs of retinitis are present in the affected eye and ensure the total absence of any signs or symptoms of retinitis pigmentosa in the fellow eye. The standard electroretinogram and standard electro-oculogram are very useful for the correct diagnosis. Other pigmentary retinopathies simulating retinitis pigmentosa have to be excluded, such as previous retinal
