Anatomical basis of a common embryological origin for epispadias and bladder or cloacal exstrophies.

Epispadias, bladder exstrophy and its variants are in the first place usually considered as urological anomalies. Embryological theses and therapeutic approaches are mainly based upon this aspect. We challenge this point of view, in order to bring out a new axis of research about this still misknown pathologic field. A review of 16 cases of bladder exstrophy, 6 epispadias cases, and one cloacal exstrophy case, which had never been described before, revealed that the almost constant bony defect of the pelvic ring was linked with the severity of the visceral features, and with the continence sta

Congenital anomalies of the portal venous system--CT appearances with embryological considerations.

The portal vein is formed by the union of the splenic and superior mesenteric veins behind the neck of the pancreas. This system is derived from the vitelline veins, a component of the extraembryonic venous system. In this paper we report three cases, each of which illustrates a congenital variant of the portal venous system, describe their computed tomography appearances and discuss the embryological processes accounting for these anomalies.

Polysplenia syndrome with various visceral anomalies in an adult: embryological and clinical considerations.

A 26-year-old female with polysplenia syndrome is reported. She had numerous visceral anomalies including polysplenia, a short pancreas, a preduodenal portal vein, malrotation of the bowel, azygos continuation of the inferior vena cava, bilateral hyparterial bronchi and symmetrical liver lobation. Embryological and clinical considerations of polysplenia syndrome are described.

Embryologic development of the prostate. Insights into the etiology and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Pharmacologic strategies for the treatment of BPH are at present directed toward relaxing prostate smooth muscle and reducing prostate volume. Historically, the primary limitation of pharmacotherapy for BPH has been that the symptomatic improvement achieved was overshadowed by the morbidity of treatment. However, the morbidity has been markedly diminished based on a more precise understanding of the embryology, physiology, and pharmacology of the prostate. The origins and pharmacologic properties of the smooth musculature of the prostate and bladder are unique. Therefore, drugs such as alpha b…

The association of congenital neuroblastoma and congenital heart disease. Is there a common embryologic basis?

Several authors have reported an association between neuroblastoma and congenital heart disease; others contend that, unlike specific well-known associations between malignancy and congenital defects (Wilm's tumor and aniridia, leukemia and Down's syndrome), no real relationship exists. We present three cases of cyanotic congenital heart disease in which subclinical neuroblastoma was found. We speculate that abnormal neural crest cell migration and development may be a common link between cardiac malformations and congenital neuroblastoma.

Morphology and embryological interpretation of a congenital occipito-atlanto-axial malformation in a dog.

A clinical, radiological, and morphological study of a congenital occipito-atlanto-axial malformation in a 13-week-old male Saint Bernard dog that became suddenly tetraplegic at 8 weeks is described. The dog was recumbent, had generalized muscle atrophy, but was alert and responsive. Pain was elicited when the head-neck junction and the cervical vertebrae were palpated, and a bony abnormality was palpated at the occiput and atlas. Clinical signs of upper motor neuron and general proprioceptive deficits in all four limbs were compatible with a focal lesion in the cervical spinal cord. Plain rad

Severe pulmonary stenosis and duct dependent coarctation in a neonate. An embryological impossibility?

A baby presented in cardiac failure with cyanosis on the first day of life. Investigations demonstrated severe pulmonary valve stenosis and duct-dependent coarctation of the aorta. This combination is impossible to explain using recognised embryological theories.

Urorectal septum malformation sequence. Report of six cases and embryological analysis.

We encountered six female infants with a specific pattern of developmental abnormalities of the urogenital and lower intestinal tracts. The anomalies included ambiguous genitalia, lack of perineal openings, and müllerian and urinary tract anomalies. Each patient had normal female chromosomes and normal adrenal gland function. We believe that this combination of anomalies represents a recognizable and specific sequence that is due to a failure of migration to and/or fusion of the urorectal septum with the cloacal membrane. This, in turn, we postulate, leads to persistence of the cloaca and cloa

The relationship of the facial nerve and first branchial cleft anomalies--embryologic considerations.

A Type II first cleft anomaly may lie superficial to, deep to, or between the branches of the facial nerve. The embryologic basis of this finding depends on the variable relationship between the migrating facial musculature, as it passes forward from the second branchial arch to the face, and the epithelial elements which persist in the region of fusion between the inferior portions of the mandibular and hyoid arches.

Histologic and embryologic studies on the innervation of the pelvic viscera in patients with Hirschsprung's disease.

On the specimens taken at autopsy from three newborns with Hirschsprung's disease and three newborns in the control group, the innervation of the pelvic organs was histologically studied. The authors found that all the pelvic organs, except for the rectum in patients with Hirschsprung's disease, preserved a completely normal innervation not only of pelvic autonomic nerve plexuses, but also of sensory nerves of spinal origin. Even in the wall of the aganglionic rectum, the extrinsic sympathetic as well as parasympathetic nerve fibers were preserved, which showed a marked proliferative change du

[Oropharyngeal lymphoid tissue as a bursa-equivalent structure: embryological and clinical considerations].

If we examine with an ontogenetic viewpoint the tissues giving origin to both thymus and avian bursa of Fabricius, we can't ignore that they are primary lymphoid organs connected to areas of ecto-entodermic junctions. They have a strong development in the embryonic life while tending to regress in the adult. The analysis of the organogenesis clarifies this affirmation. In the human cephalic district we know of various ectoentodermic stratification areas: the branchial pockets and the Remake pharyngeal membrane. The oral-pharyngeal lymphoid tissue is histogenetically linked to the stem-cells of

Embryologic origin of various epithelial cell types in the thyroid gland of the rat.

Ventral pharyngeal outpocketings and ultimobranchial outpocketings from the 14-day-old fetus of the Fischer rat were isolated before they fused to form thyroid glands. The outpocketings were implanted into different kidney capsules of adult male Fischer rats, and were allowed to grow for several months. Transplants were then excised and examined by electron microscopy. The ultimobranchial outpocketing gave rise to two types of follicles. One contained ciliated cells, cells with an abundant agranular reticulum, U cells with basal hemidesmosomes, and two types of cells with secretory vesicles. T

Venous sinus of Kelch: a cadaveric study with embryological insights and clinical implications.

The venous sinus of Kelch (VSK) represents a rare but clinically significant venous variant of the middle cranial fossa, with very limited documentation in the existing literature. This study aimed to understand the morphology, course, and morphometry of VSK along with associated variations in the drainage pattern of the superficial middle cerebral vein (SMCV) and middle meningeal sinus (MMS). This study was conducted over the period from 2022 to 2025 at Zoram Medical College and Hospital, Aizawl, Mizoram. In the present study, VSK was observed in 9.26% of the 54 middle cranial fossae examined

Ethical analysis of the public's perception towards human fetal and embryological collections.

BACKGROUND: Lack of informed consent is the main ethical challenge in human fetal and embryological collections as it violates autonomy, disregards cultural sensitivities, and reflects historical injustices. It is essential that where future frameworks are established, they are codesigned with relevant communities. METHODS: A survey was used to assess the perceptions of the public toward human fetal and embryological collections, with a focus on informed consent. The study analyzed the results through the lens of macro, meso, and micro ethics, with the consideration of chrono and exo ethics.
