Researches on the development of the vertebral column were focused mainly on the growth of lumbar and cervical regions. However, none of them were related to the development of costovertebral joints. To our knowledge, the relationship between ribs and thoracic vertebrae has never been addressed. The aims of the presented study are: (1) to trace the formation of processes of vertebral arches and articular surfaces of the vertebral bodies, and (2) to trace the development of the ribs, particularly their joint surfaces. Study subjects are staged human embryos (from the 5th week) from the collecti

The first and second branchial arches are embryonic primordium that contributes to craniofacial development. Interferences in normal development of these structures result in variable maxillary, mandibular, and ear abnormalities. These anomalies can be isolated or part of some known and unknown conditions, among them, the oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS). Malformations of the external ear or microtia are mandatory features of the OAVS and occur as an isolated malformation (population frequency of 0.03%), or in association with other anomalies such as mandible hypoplasia, epibulbar dermoi

Lipomatous hamartomas are rare disorders affecting the central nervous system. In our report, two observations of this disorder are presented. Both are interhemispheric in location and are associated with a complete agenesis of the corpus callosum, while having different histological structures. In our first patient, the intracranial formation caused refractory seizures, was partially surgically removed, and a biopsy was performed. Light microscopic examination disclosed the presence of a highly vascularized mature adipose tissue with numerous calcifications. The second case was an incidental

Corneal organoids are cornea-like tissue structures that are developed from induced pluripotent stem cells or embryonic stem cells in vitro. They have similar anatomical characteristics and gene expression profiles to the human cornea. Although the culture of corneal organoids is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming, they can be tailored to reconstruct the physiological environment and the interaction between corneal cells in each layer, which suggests broad application prospects. In this article, we review the latest research progress and summarize the application of corneal organoids in

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary blastoma (PB) comprises a rare heterogeneous group of lung tumours typically containing immature epithelial and mesenchymal structures that imitate the embryonic lung tissue and extremely rarely occurs during pregnancy. Although cough and haemoptysis are the most common PB symptoms, they usually indicate other serious pregnancy-related complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: The article presents the unusual case of a 22-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed with PB during pregnancy.
CONCLUSIONS: PB is characterized by poor prognosis and patients' outcome relies on a rapid diagnos

The thymus generates central immune tolerance by producing self-restricted and self-tolerant T-cells as a result of interactions between the developing thymocytes and the stromal microenvironment, mainly formed by the thymic epithelial cells. The thymic epithelium derives from the endoderm of the pharyngeal pouches, embryonic structures that rely on environmental cues from the surrounding mesenchyme for its development. Here, we review the most recent advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in early thymic organogenesis at stages preceding the expression of the trans…

Yolk sac tumor (YST) and teratoma both categorized as germ cell tumor (GCT). YST shows preferential differentiation toward yolk sac structures, while teratoma consists of tissues that originate from at least two embryonic germinal layers. Extragonadal location of YST is rare, whereas extragonadal teratoma is majority presented in nasopharynx area. Mature teratoma tends to be benign although some malignant transformation can occur. Recurrence of teratoma was reported mostly in the case of immature teratoma. YST occurrence after removal of mature teratoma is never reported. It is extremely rare

The mammalian outer, middle, and inner ears have different embryonic origins and evolved at different times in the vertebrate lineage. The outer ear is derived from first and second branchial arch ectoderm and mesoderm, the middle ear ossicles are derived from neural crest mesenchymal cells that invade the first and second branchial arches, whereas the inner ear and its associated vestibule-acoustic (VIIIth) ganglion are derived from the otic placode. In this chapter, we discuss recent findings in the development of these structures and describe the contributions of members of a Forkhead trans

Pdzrn3, a member of the PDZRN/SEMCAP/LNX protein family containing a RING finger and two PDZ domains, has been implicated in myoblast and osteoblast differentiation. However, its spatio-temporal expression pattern during embryonic development has not been defined. Here, we describe the cloning and expression pattern of pdzrn3 during zebrafish development. We found that in addition to being expressed in several mesodermal structures, this gene displays specific expression in the central nervous system including rhombomere 1, ventral retina, thalamus and motor neurons, indicating a novel functio

Abnormalities of the vena cava system are usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during catheter placement or pacemaker implantation. Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is caused by failure of involution of the left anterior cardinal vein caudal to the left brachiocephalic vein during embryonic development. It is a benign condition, but becomes dangerous during pacemaker lead implantation, especially in emergency situations and when the right superior vena cava is absent. This is brought about by difficulty in pacemaker lead maneuvering into the right ventricle. A 64-cut mult

How cell and tissue interactions lead to complex organ structures and differentiated cell types during organogenesis is one of the most fundamental questions in developmental biology. The embryonic lung and kidney of the mouse are useful models for studying the molecular mechanisms of morphogenesis, and in both of these organs, the epithelial bud undergoes a characteristic branching process. This review discusses the potential role of an extracellular matrix molecule, type XVIII collagen, in the generation of the branching patterns in the lung and kidney and how its experimental respecificatio

The survival motor neurons (smn) gene in mice is essential for embryonic viability. In humans, mutation of the telomeric copy of the SMN1 gene causes spinal muscular atrophy, an autosomal recessive disease. Here we report that the SMN protein interacts with the zinc-finger protein ZPR1 and that these proteins colocalize in small subnuclear structures, including gems and Cajal bodies. SMN and ZPR1 redistribute from the cytoplasm to the nucleus in response to serum. This process is disrupted in cells from patients with Werdnig-Hoffman syndrome (spinal muscular atrophy type I) that have SMN1 muta

Distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) in nucleus of various formations of embryonic human brain was studied by histochemical method. Early activity of AChE is characteristic for one formations and early BChE activity is shown for others. In fibers of solitarius tract and particularly of descending tract in the V pair of cranial nerves active AChE was revealed for 7-8-week embryos yet. In 10-12-week human foetuses high total AChE and BChE levels were revealed in brain structures. High AChE activity was observed in caudoventrolateral group of the nucleus of

Three stillborn fetuses are reported in which an abdominal wall defect was associated with defects in the urogenital and anal region. Autopsy of these fetuses provided clues indicative of how and where the embryonic development went wrong. The malformation involved a disturbance of the cell deposition process, occurring in the caudal part of the embryo. During the cell deposition process, which takes place in the neural crest and the body wall placode, ectodermal cells are added to the mesodermal compartment of the embryo, thus contributing to the anlagen of several structures, including the v

The periocular mesenchyme (POM) gives rise to key structures in the ocular anterior segment, and its malformation leads to anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD) with iridocorneal angle (ICA) abnormalities. However, the transcriptional profile of the POM and the regulatory mechanisms governing cell-fate decision during anterior eye and ICA development remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed a comprehensive time-series analysis by sequencing rat anterior ocular samples collected at five consecutive perinatal stages: embryonic days 16.5 and 18.5, the day of birth, and postnatal days 4 a

Müllerian ducts are paired embryonic tubes that give rise to the female reproductive tract. In humans, the Müllerian ducts differentiate into the Fallopian tubes, uterus and upper portion of the vagina. In birds and reptiles, the Müllerian ducts develop into homologous structures, the oviducts. The genetic and hormonal regulation of duct development is a model for understanding sexual differentiation. In males, the ducts typically undergo regression during embryonic life, under the influence of testis-derived Anti-Müllerian Hormone, AMH. In females, a lack of AMH during embryogenesis allows th

Amniote integumentary appendages constitute a diverse group of micro-organs, including feathers, hair and scales. These structures typically develop as genetically controlled units1, the spatial patterning of which emerges from a self-organized chemical Turing system2,3 with integrated mechanical feedback4,5. The seemingly purely mechanical patterning of polygonal crocodile head scales provides an exception to this paradigm6. However, the nature and origin of the mechanical stress field driving this patterning remain unclear. Here, using precise in ovo intravenous injections of epidermal growt

Tessier 7 cleft, or transverse facial cleft, is a rare congenital anomaly involving lateral facial tissues, often resulting from embryonic disruptions in the first and second branchial arches. It presents varying severities from macrostomia to complete clefts affecting soft tissue and skeletal structures. Surgical management is challenging, requiring a multidisciplinary approach for functional and aesthetic reconstruction. This case report discusses a patient's presentation, surgical intervention, and outcomes. Our case report describes a rare form of Tessier cleft in a one-and-a-half-year-old

The human embryo undergoes morphogenetic transformations following implantation into the uterus, but our knowledge of this crucial stage is limited by the inability to observe the embryo in vivo. Models of the embryo derived from stem cells are important tools for interrogating developmental events and tissue-tissue crosstalk during these stages1. Here we establish a model of the human post-implantation embryo, a human embryoid, comprising embryonic and extraembryonic tissues. We combine two types of extraembryonic-like cell generated by overexpression of transcription factors with wild-type e

Mutations in EFTUD2 are responsible for the autosomal dominant syndrome named MFDM (mandibulofacial dysostosis with microcephaly). However, it is not clear how reduced levels of EFTUD2 cause abnormalities associated with this syndrome. To determine if the mouse can serve as a model for uncovering the etiology of abnormalities found in MFDM patients, we used in situ hybridization to characterize expression of Eftud2 during mouse development, and used CRISPR/Cas9 to generate a mutant mouse line with deletion of exon 2 of the mouse gene. We found that Eftud2 was expressed throughout embryonic dev
