Childbirth related PTSD and its association with infant outcome: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal postnatal mental health problems may negatively impact child development. Postpartum research has mainly focused on the impact of maternal depression and anxiety due to their high prevalence (13-25 % and 10-18 %, respectively). However, maternal childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD) could be another important risk factor in child development (estimated prevalence: 4.7 %). OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether maternal CB-PTSD (symptoms) are associated with a negative mother-child relationship and/or child developmental outcome for children aged 0-5 years. Furthermore, we exami

Evolution of burnout syndrome in Spanish healthcare professionals during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: psychosocial variables involved.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence shows that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers have experienced high levels of burnout. The preceding literature also points to the need to consider the three elements of burnout independently, as they appear to have different evolutionary trends and possibly different buffering and amplifying variables, although these aspects have hardly been explored. METHODS: The aim of the present investigation is precisely to shed light on these latter issues. It is a prospective study, carried out in 256 healthcare workers in Spain during three time points in rela

The effect of an acceptance and commitment therapy-based self-compassion program on self-compassion and psychological flexibility in mothers.

The modern parenting process has become a complex, yet needed, structure that challenges caregivers' ability to manage their own emotional burdens and respond sensitively to their children's developmental needs. In this context, this study aims to examine the effect of a self-compassion psychoeducation program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on mothers of non-working children aged 4-6, focusing on their levels of self-compassion and psychological flexibility. Conducted using a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 30 volunteer mothers, divided into an experimental and

Preventing Depression in Adolescents With Depressed Parents: Insights From Randomized Controlled Trials and Parenting Interventions.

Childhood abuse in adolescents has long been linked to an elevated likelihood of harmful consequences in both adolescence and adulthood. Externalizing behavior disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are among the most common reasons children and adolescents are referred for mental health care. Another common illness among children and teenagers is depression. Among the principal risk factors for young people acquiring depression is parental depression. Besides genetic heredity, a variety of changeable psychological and social variables, such as a negative thinking

Deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders: From focal brain targets to cognitive networks.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising intervention for treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Up to 90% of patients who have not recovered with therapy or medication have reported benefit from DBS in open-label studies. Response rates in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), however, have been much lower. This has been argued to arise from surgical variability between sites, and recent psychiatric DBS research has focused on refining targeting through personalized imaging. Much less attention has bee

The validity of a simple outcome measure to assess stuttering therapy.

OBJECTIVE: The validity of a simple and not time-consuming self-assessment (SA) Scale was tested to establish progress after or during stuttering therapy. PATIENTS AND METHOD: The scores on the SA scale were related to (1) objective measures (percentage of stuttered syllables, and syllables per minute) and (2) (self-)evaluation tests (self-evaluation questionnaires and perceptual evaluations or judgments of disfluency, naturalness and comfort by naïve listeners). Data were collected from two groups of stutterers at four measurement times: pretherapy, posttherapy, 12 months after therapy and 2

Transfer effects of animal-assisted therapy on socioemotional skills in adult inpatient rehabilitation after acquired brain injury: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with acquired brain injury (ABI) often experience difficulties in social and emotional functioning, potentially affecting recovery and quality of life. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is increasingly used in rehabilitation to support socioemotional functioning. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial investigated whether the effects of AAT extend beyond therapy sessions in patients with ABI undergoing inpatient neurorehabilitation. We hypothesized that patients receiving AAT would demonstrate greater improvements in socioemotional skills compared to those receiving standa

Unleashing compassionate care: canine-assisted intervention as a promising harm reduction approach to prisonization in Canada and its relevance to forensic psychiatry.

In recent years, there has been a global advancement in the offering of canine-assisted interventions (CAI) in prisons. However, these programs have focused primarily on the benefits to the dogs involved and not on the impact on the participants. The authors of this perspective study have been running a CAI program with therapy dogs, called PAWSitive Support, in a Canadian federal prison since 2016. Thoughts from the program facilitators and interviews with prison staff indicate that the program, and specifically the therapy dogs, provides a unique and integrated source of comfort, support, an

Symptom provocation and reduction in patients suffering from spider phobia: an fMRI study on exposure therapy.

Neurofunctional mechanisms underlying cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are still not clearly understood. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study focused on changes in brain activation as a result of one-session CBT in patients suffering from spider phobia. Twenty-six female spider phobics and 25 non-phobic subjects were presented with spider pictures, generally disgust-inducing, generally fear-inducing and affectively neutral scenes in an initial fMRI session. Afterwards, the patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy group (TG) or a waiting list group (WG). The scans

The subjective effect of antipsychotic medication on trauma-related thoughts, emotions, and physical symptoms: A qualitative study with people who have experienced childhood trauma and psychosis.

OBJECTIVES: Among people with psychosis, those with a history of childhood trauma are likely to experience trauma-related symptoms, such as trauma memory intrusions. Irrespective of whether these individuals continue to remember and re-experience trauma, their treatment very often includes alleviating psychotic symptoms through the use of antipsychotic medication. Antipsychotics, while primarily used to treat psychotic symptoms, can influence non-psychotic symptoms and alter how people think and feel. We thus aimed to explore how people with childhood trauma and psychosis experience the effect

A Qualitative Co-Production Study of a Solutions-Focused Approach to Understanding the Barriers and Facilitators to Engagement of Male Suicidal Prisoners in Psychological Therapy for Suicide Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological therapies are rarely available for UK suicidal prisoners. A pilot feasibility clinical trial of Cognitive Behavioural Suicide Prevention therapy showed that it was possible to deliver therapy offering the potential to improve outcomes for suicidal prisoners. However, there were challenges to engaging male prisoners in therapy as many experienced difficulties in accessing and talking about their emotions. Difficulty in talking about emotions is common amongst male prisoners, yet this is essential for successful engagement in a talking therapy. The current co-producti
