Identification of an immune-responsive mesolimbocortical serotonergic system: potential role in regulation of emotional behavior.

Peripheral immune activation can have profound physiological and behavioral effects including induction of fever and sickness behavior. One mechanism through which immune activation or immunomodulation may affect physiology and behavior is via actions on brainstem neuromodulatory systems, such as serotonergic systems. We have found that peripheral immune activation with antigens derived from the nonpathogenic, saprophytic bacterium, Mycobacterium vaccae, activated a specific subset of serotonergic neurons in the interfascicular part of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRI) of mice, as measured by qua

[The participation of CCK-8-ergic mechanisms in the regulation of emotional behavior in rodents].

Effects of CCK-8 receptor agonists caerulein and pentagastrin and CCK-8 receptor antagonist proglumide on exploratory and locomotor activity of mice and rats were studied. Systemic administration of caerulein (500 ng/kg 1 mcg/kg) decreased significantly the exploratory activity of mice in elevated plus-maze. This anxiogenic-like action of caerulein was attenuated by acute pretreatment with proglumide (1 and 15 mg/kg) but not with diazepam (up to 0.75 mg/kg). Proglumide slightly increased the exploratory activity of rats in plus-maze; on the other hand, caerulein and pentagastrin potently decre

Is PTSD symptomatology a mechanism of emotional regulation? Insights from an interdisciplinary point of view.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology has historically been considered a psychic ailment that is part of a mental disorder. However, it has often been proposed that it could play an adaptive role, in that it would prevent individuals from being exposed to content or situations that they would not be prepared to process. Within the literature on emotional regulation (ER), PTSD symptomatology has commonly been linked to the concept of emotional dysregulation (ED). However, some definitions open the possibility that traumatic symptomatology could be considered ER, from which delica…

Aberrant brain network connectivity related to cognitive and emotional regulation in women with abdominal obesity.

Abdominal obesity (AO) exhibits unique endocrine and metabolic characteristics in women, yet its neural mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural mechanisms of AO in females by examining functional connectivity (FC) alterations across brain networks. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data were collected from 38 female AO patients and 24 healthy controls (HCs). Independent component analysis (ICA) was utilized to evaluate FC and functional network connectivity (FNC) within and between brain networks. FC analysis revealed significant alterations within t

Relationship between early traumatic experiences and emotional regulation skills in major depressive and bipolar disorders.

Childhood trauma can cause deficits in emotional regulation. However, few studies have investigated childhood trauma and emotional regulation skills in patients with mood disorders. We aimed to investigate how childhood trauma and Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire (ERSQ) scores are associated with mood disorders. This study included 779 patients with mood disorders (major depressive disorder [MDD, n = 240], bipolar I disorder [BDI, n = 121], and bipolar II disorder [BDII, n = 418]). We used their Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ) and ERSQ scores for the evaluation. The betwee…

Alexithymia, dissociation and emotional regulation in eating disorders: Evidence of improvement through specialized inpatient treatment.

The research into emotional regulation in eating disorders (EDs) has shown specific impairments and maladaptive coping strategies in patients, and there is an increasing interest in the role of the emotional domain in the treatment outcome. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a specialized inpatient treatment characterized by both an intensive and comprehensive standardized multidisciplinary programme based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and a flexible and personalized component implemented by third-wave interventions. A cohort of 67 female ED patients (anorexia nervosa = 28, bulimia n…

The Impact of Emotional Regulation Strategies on Pain Catastrophizing in the Context of Interpersonal Relationships.

OBJECTIVES: The Communal Coping Model suggests that pain catastrophizing may serve to elicit support from others. What is not known is how emotional regulation, namely emotional inhibition, impacts pain catastrophizing within the context of an interpersonal relationship. Individuals who have a greater tendency to emotionally inhibit may have a greater likelihood to use catastrophizing as a means for seeking support, particularly in relationships characterized by satisfaction and emotional validation. METHODS: Data were collected from 50 undergraduate couples at the University of Michigan-Dear…

Understanding deficient emotional self-regulation in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a controlled study.

While symptoms of deficient emotional self-regulation (DESR) such as low frustration tolerance, temper outbursts, emotional impulsivity, and mood lability are commonly associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), little is known about their nature. The main aim of this post hoc study was to examine the correlates of DESR in a large sample of adults with and without ADHD. Subjects were 206 adults with ADHD and 123 adults without ADHD from a family study of ADHD. Emotional impulsivity was operationalized using items from the Barkley Current Behavior Scale. Subjects were compr

Unravelling the Ties: How Attachment Styles and Emotion Regulation Fuel Emotional Eating in Youth With Obesity-A Clinical Sample Study.

Emotional eating is critical in the development and maintenance of obesity among children and adolescents. While attachment's influence on emotional eating is increasingly recognised, little is known about how emotion regulation strategies mediate this, particularly in samples with obesity. This study examined how attachment dimensions affect emotional eating through different emotion regulation strategies in youths with obesity. 772 children and adolescents (ages 7-19) with obesity participated. Key variables were measured using validated questionnaires. Mediation effects were analysed throug

Pre-service EFL teachers' emotional experiences, emotion regulation strategies and influencing factors in research: A Chinese case study.

Currently, teacher emotion in the context of conducting research has drawn much attention in the field of teacher development. However, existing empirical studies mainly focus on in-service teachers' emotional experiences in conducting research, thus overlooking pre-service teachers. This study involving seven pre-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers from a comprehensive university in mainland China as participants adopts a qualitative method to explore their emotional experiences, emotion regulation strategies and influencing factors in research. Attitudes, Emotions, and Emotion Regulation as Underlying and In-The-Moment Predictors of Men's Intentions to Perpetrate Sexual Assault: An Application of the I3 Model.

Sexual assault is a significant problem among young men, and several underlying and in-the-moment factors are associated with this behavior. However, research has not examined how underlying factors may influence men's in-the-moment use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies, emotional experience during sexual situations, or intentions to perpetrate sexual assault. 187 young, single men from the United States who had sex with a woman in the past year completed questionnaires, projected themselves into hypothetical sexual scenarios, and indicated how they would behave when their partner withdrew

Bedtime procrastination as a typical problem of self-regulation? Insights from the examination of heart rate variability, behavioral regulation and emotion regulation.

Bedtime procrastination (BP), recognized as a common self-regulation issue, is linked to insufficient sleep and in turn, adverse health outcomes. However, the specific contributions of different components of self-regulation - particularly the biological underpinnings - remain insufficiently understood. This cross-sectional study aims to explore the relationship between BP and self-regulation components, namely vagally-mediated HRV (vmHRV) as physiological concomitant of self-regulation, behavioral regulation, and emotion regulation. A final sample of N = 135 adults completed a baseline vmHRV

An Age-Related Mechanism of Emotion Regulation: Regulating Sadness Promotes Children's Learning by Broadening Information Processing.

Emotion regulation predicts positive academic outcomes like learning, but little is known about why. Effective emotion regulation likely promotes learning by broadening the scope of what may be attended to after an emotional event. One hundred twenty-six 6- to 13-year-olds' (54% boys) regulation of sadness was examined for changes in emotional experience, information processing, and memory for subsequent neutral information. Instructions to use specific strategies (distancing, positive reappraisal, rumination, or no strategy) predicted changes in sadness and happiness but did not predict infor

Helping to Feel Better or Do Better? Implications of Interpersonal Emotion Regulation for Emotional Well-Being and Successful Goal Pursuit.

Personal growth often requires people to cope with setbacks and the negative emotions they evoke. Romantic partners can serve as important sources of support in these situations. In this research, we examined which interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) strategies are most effective for supporting two common goals in such contexts: improving emotional well-being and facilitating goal pursuit. Across three studies, we investigated the effectiveness of seven IER strategies (i.e., interpersonal acceptance, reappraisal, problem-solving, co-rumination, distraction, suppression and ignoring) for hel

Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and positive symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: The mediating role of global emotion dysregulation.

Previous studies have identified a positive association between maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations and delusions) among patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. However, translating this finding to clinical practice is challenging. Some patients are reported to experience difficulties in correcting the use of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies in psychological therapy, which may be due to an underlying effect of global emotion dysregulation. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the mediating or mode
