ACOG Committee Opinion No. 733: Employment Considerations During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period.

In the United States, it is common for women, including mothers and pregnant women, to work outside the home. Working during pregnancy is generally safe. For those in high-risk occupations or with medically complicated pregnancies, work accommodations often can allow for continued safe employment. The major employment issues concerning pregnant women include pregnancy-related discrimination, work accommodations that allow continued employment, job-protected leave, and wage replacement while on leave. Workplace discrimination related to being pregnant and pregnancy-related harassment, including

Employment Status and Participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation: DOES ENCOURAGING EARLIER ENROLLMENT IMPROVE ATTENDANCE?

PURPOSE: For patients hospitalized for a cardiac event, an earlier appointment to outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR) increases participation. However, it is unknown what effect hastening CR enrollment might have among employed patients planning to return to work (RTW). METHODS: Using 2 complementary data sets from Henry Ford Hospital (HFH) and Mayo Clinic, we assessed when employed patients eligible for CR anticipated a RTW, the impact of an earlier appointment on CR enrollment, and the effect of employment status on the number of CR sessions attended. Patients at HFH attended CR at eithe

Supported employment for persons with serious mental illness: current status and future directions.

The individual placement and supported (IPS) model of supported employment is the most empirically validated model of vocational rehabilitation for persons with schizophrenia or another serious mental illness. Over 18 randomized controlled trials have been conducted throughout the world demonstrating the effectiveness of supported employment at improving competitive work compared to other vocational programs: IPS supported employment is defined by the following principles: 1) inclusion of all clients who want to work; 2) integration of vocational and clinical services; 3) focus on competitive

[Impact of epilepsy-related stigma on employability: A review of the evidence for primary care practice].

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that entails a substantial psychosocial and occupational impact mediated by stigma. Available studies show that, compared with the general population, people with epilepsy have higher rates of unemployment, work disability, absenteeism and presenteeism, as well as poorer health-related quality of life. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of stigma on the employment situation of people with epilepsy and its implications for primary care and occupational medicine. METHOD: A structured narrative review with critical appr

The Sociodemographic Determinants of Nurse Exportation: An Analysis of the Willingness of Ghanaian Nurses for Overseas Employment.

Nurse exportation, driven by sociodemographic factors, has become a significant trend in many African countries, including Ghana. Factors such as age, gender, marital status, religion, and family responsibilities influence nurses' willingness to migrate for better economic and professional opportunities. This study explores the sociodemographic dimensions shaping nurse exportation in Ghana, employing a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory research design. A cross-sectional survey of 483 nursing students and interviews with seven nurses provided insight into migration patterns.

The Association Between Smoker Protection Laws and Smoking, Employment, and Attempting to Quit Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Globally, workplaces have introduced non-smokers-only hiring policies to avoid hiring people who smoke since they cost thousands of dollars more annually to employ compared to non-smokers. Tobacco industry efforts gave rise to state smoker protection laws in the United States (U.S.), which protect people who smoke from employment discrimination. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between living in a state with a smoker protection law and smoking status among U.S. adults and employment status and attempting to quit smoking in the past 12 months among those who currentl

Job loss and mental health: The role of anticipation and re-employment in recovery patterns.

Job loss is known to adversely affect mental health, but the time course of recovery and the role of anticipation remain unclear. Using 22 annual waves (2001-2022) of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, we estimate fixed-effects models to examine the relationship between redundancy and mental health (SF-36), incorporating subjective probability of job loss to refine anticipation measures. The final sample consists of 14,195 individuals and 4251 redundancy events. Three key findings emerge. First, we document a generalized decline in mental health prior to job

Adolescent loneliness and precarious employment in young adulthood: The moderating role of school attachment.

Young adults are increasingly exposed to precarious employment, yet little is known about how early-life social experiences relate to labor-market outcomes in adulthood. Drawing on life-course perspectives, this study examines whether adolescent loneliness is associated with precarious employment in young adulthood and whether school and neighborhood attachment moderate this association. We used longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Adolescent loneliness was measured in Wave I, and precarious employment was assessed in young adulthood (Wave IV).

Workplace Wellbeing in Ontario's Public Sector: Employee and Employer Perspectives on Workplace Supports.

BACKGROUND: Workplace wellbeing has become a key focus of occupational and public health, with increasing attention to mental health, psychosocial risks, fatigue, and work-life balance. However, limited evidence compares employee and employer perspectives, distinguishes support availability from support use, or examines whether wellbeing is more closely associated with isolated interventions or the broader support environment. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from public-sector employees (N = 1307) and employers (N = 321) in Ontario, Canada. Analyses compared employee and em

Technical Evaluation of Drones and Employment Strategy for Blood Logistics in an Operational Military Environment.

INTRODUCTION: Exsanguinating hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable death in combat. The Joint Trauma System prioritizes cold-chain stored whole blood (CCSB) as the resuscitation fluid of choice for combat casualties. However, in distributed maritime operations (DMO) and future large-scale combat operations (LSCO), significant overwater distances, cold-chain requirements, and limited access to aviation assets complicate blood resupply. This is similarly true in complex disaster environments. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offer a potential solution by providing long-range, low-risk, and c

Primary caregiver employment status is associated with traumatic brain injury in children in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury in children. Previous literature has demonstrated that TBI may be associated with supervision level. We hypothesised that primary caregiver employment would be associated with child TBI. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed for children aged 0-17 using the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) 2018-2019. The NSCH contains survey data on children's health completed by adult caregivers from randomly selected households across the USA. We compared current TBI prevalence between children from households of d

Variation in Receipt of Pre-Employment Transition Services and Vocational Outcomes for Students With Disabilities.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 sought to improve employment outcomes through vocational preparation activities called pre-employment transition services (Pre-ETS) for students with disabilities. We analyzed Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA-911) data to examine receipt of Pre-ETS across states, differences among students who received only Pre-ETS versus Pre-ETS and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services, and association of services with employment outcomes. On average, states delivered two of the five required Pre-ETS types. Rates of receipt of Pre-ETS, and tra

Employment is associated with manual ability in adults with cerebral palsy - a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Employment rates are lower in adults with cerebral palsy (CP). Even though reduced manual ability is associated with limitations in daily activities, it is unclear whether employment rates are associated with manual ability in adults with CP. OBJECTIVE: To analyze regular employment and employment rates (hours/week) in adults with CP and estimate their associations with manual ability relative to age and sex. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of adults with CP, aged 20-64 years, from the combined Swedish CP follow-up program and registry. Manual ability was classified as

The interplay of poverty risk-employment trajectories in couples around the transition to parenthood in Germany.

The transition to parenthood is a critical period that exacerbates gendered economic inequality, with mothers more likely than their partners to experience employment disruptions and income losses. This study examines individual poverty risk among partnered individuals (N = 1237) in Germany from a life course perspective, analyzing how gendered career patterns around first births between 1992 and 2013 intersect with changes in individual poverty risk, i.e. under the assumption of no income pooling. Applying multichannel sequence analysis (MCSA) to data from the Socio-Economic Panel, the findin
